FINDING THE SUN'S TRUE BEARING. PRECOMPUTED TABLES., Arpin, P.E., foreword.
7 Arpin, P.E., foreword. FINDING THE SUN'S TRUE BEARING. PRECOMPUTED TABLES.
Ottawa Civil Aviation Branch, Department of Transport Soft Cover Very Good
112 pp + blank pages for notes, oblong (7 15/16" H x 10 1/2" D). No date. Erratum sheet laid in. "From aviation's earliest days, pilots of aircraft have been conscious of the need for accurate directional information. The development of the magnetic and gyro compass has, for general purposes, kept pace with aviation needs in most areas of the world. Flight operations in Northern Canada, however, present problems which are unique by virtue of the position of the North Magnetic Pole. - - In response to a need for the provision of directional information simply and to within one degree the Flight Standards and Regulations Division of the Civil Aviation Branch has arranged the development of these tables from which the Sun's True Bearing can be extracted directly knowing date, correct Local Civil time (within reasonable limits) and approximate Latitude and Longitude. - - It is also significant to note that these Tables are not limited to Canada only, but include any areas of the earth north of 40 degrees North Latitude, and for all practical purposes will maintain usable accuracy for an indefinite period." From the Foreword. Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownwership marks. Exterior - small soiling mark on top of textblock, some very light rubbing/soiling on rear cover.

190 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). B&w photographs, drawings. "Jean Batten is one of the great names in aviation history. She was born in New Zealand in 1909, a few weeks after Louis Bleriot flew the English Channel, and qualified for a flying licence at the London Aero Club in 1930. (This book) tells the story of (her) early life and of all her famous flights. The vivid descriptions of these flights, made nearly 50 years ago, highlight the hardships and dangers faced by the early aviators. Quite alone she flew immense distances in record times and in the most basic of aeroplanes. Not only did her flights create time records, but they also blazed the trail for the modern airline routes. The book is based on her earlier work 'My Life' 1938, but thoroughly revised and lengthened by the author without losing its period feel. Now, to a new generation of readers, used to sophisticated jet travel, her achievements will seem incredible. (A) gripping story of skill and courage written by one of the last great pioneer aviatiors." Dust jacket has been price-clipped, minor edge browning, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

London Methuen 1982 0413397602 / 9780413397607 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." He was test pilot on many of the first and second generation jet fighters and bombers, both Briti s h a n d American, as well as the first British supersonic aircraft. The core of the book is made up of the author's flight test reports on such aircraft as the Gloster Meteor, the North American B45, the English Electric Canberra, the English El ec tr i c Li gh tning and Britain's first supersonic bomber, the TSR2, a project which was cancelled before the aircraft went into production. In conclusion, the author looks to a future in which he sees supersonic flight playing an ever-increasing ro le, e sp eci all y in the field of military aviation." "The air war on the Eastern Front in World War II was history's largest and longest air campaign. Nevertheless, it has been one of the least known and least understood chapters of aviation history. This is because earlier publications on this immense subject have been based on material taken almost exclusively from the German side. (The 4 volume set, of which this is Volum e 1 ) i s to be the most complete and detailed series ever published on the air war on the Eastern Front. It presents for the first time a true balance between German and Soviet accounts. (The authors) have undertaken a huge research effort to g le a n th e t rue events of this air war. Thanks to their painstaking research and brilliant analysis of German archival material, some of the first Soviet Air Force records ever to be seen in the West, and new information from German and Soviet a irm en , the y are able to present many valuable insights into the vast Eastern Front aerial struggle."
