SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES., Brewer, Priscilla J.
7 Brewer, Priscilla J. SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES.
Hanover, NH University Press of New England 1986 0874513626 / 9780874513622 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
273 pp, large 8vo (89 1/4" H). B&w photographs, tables. "Athough we know much about Shaker furniture, dance, textiles, and various artifacts, few books tell us about the Shakers as real people and the inner social workings of their sect. Who were the Shakers? What were their social, economic, and religious backgrounds? Why did they join this celibate, communal sect, and why did some leave while others stayed? What did they think of life inside the communities and the rapidly changing world outside? And, perhaps most important, when and why did the sect begin to decline, and how did Believers adjust to this decline? These are some of the questions Priscilla Brewer addresses in this engaging social history. Her highly readable general introduction to the Shakers challenges basic assumptions about the timing and reasons for the group's decline. Brewer studies the Shaker movement from its founding in 1774 to its last major public statement in 1904, restricting her work to the eleven Shaker communities in eastern New York and New England. (She) provides an inside look at Shaker life by recounting the group's social organization, the occupational roles of its members, the composition of its communities, and the operation of the Shaker hierarchy. Far from being a dry, sociological study, this book is filled with anecdotes and revealing stories related by the Shakers through the many writings they left behind." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny foxing mark on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, slight fading to spine color.

Seattle, Washington Superior Publishing 1974 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
192 pp, 10 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, advertisements, articles, reproductions. "This 'scrapbook' is as absorbing as an old family album that carries one back through the decades. Pictures and yarns of the early 1800s wheat-farming era, when harvesting was a matter of hand labor - cutting with scythes - bundling into sheaves - and the women following the crews to cook up husky meals for hungry men. Then came Cyrus McCormick's mechanical reaper. Although many were dubious about the machine, it proved itself highly competent, and the whole picture changed. Harvest-ing would never be the same again. Following the success of the reaper came many other inventions that revolutionized wheat farming and all of agriculture. But wheat farming still required plenty of people-power." Small bump at top of spine, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, very light wear at corners and at top/bottom of spine. 12 Hunt, Peter, editor. Associate editors: Dennis Butts, Ethel Heins, Margaret Kinnell, Tony Watkins. With Gillian Avery, Anne Scott MacLeod, Julia Briggs, Zena Sutherland, Peter Hollindale, Michael Stone, Roderick McGillis & Beth Gilderdale. CHILDREN'S LITERATURE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
Oxford Oxford University Press 1995 0192123203 / 9780192123206 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good
378 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Pictorial endpapers, many b&w and color photographs and reproductions. "(T)races the history of children's books in Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand from the very first printed books through to the present day. (This book) takes 'children's literature' to mean books designed for children as well as books for childhood, and so embraces everything from religious tracts to multi-media comics, from the 'classic' to the unashamedly popular. Written by leading experts, this survey shows that children's literature reflects how childhood has been defined, controlled, and appreciated at different times. It reveals how adults have explored questions of power, entertainment, sexuality, and equality through their writing for children, and demonstrates how the borders between what is adult and what children's fiction are routinely blurred. A series of chronological chapters charts the 'history' which begins in the sixteenth century with grammars and ABCs. We move from books of instruction through to fables and fantasies in the eighteenth century, from reward books and romance to school stories in the nineteenth, and on to comics, colour picture-books, and science fiction in (the twentieth century). Throughout the text, books, authors, illustrators, publishers, and children readers are discussed within their wider social, political, and economic environment. Richly illustrated in black and white and colour, and with a section on further reading, a full index, and a chronology which places books for children in their literary and political context, this is a fascinating study which will delight all readers, young and old." Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling; tiny dent on front hinge; slight fading to color on front panel, spine, top edge and flap-folds.

London Oxford University Press 1963 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Heather Standring.
195 pp, 7 7/8" H. Dust jacket art by William Stobbs. B&w illustrations. First printing in the Oxford Children's Library series - first published in 1870. "The seventeenth-century Civil War was a time of intrigues and divided loyalties in which, against her will, Rosamond Fane found herself taking part. Her own sympathies, like those of all the Fanes, were for the King, yet her guardian, Colonel Carewe, had just been appointed Commander of the Guard at St. James's Palace where the royal children were confined. The children were allowed to play with Rosamond and her cousins and she soon became a close friend of the unhappy Princess Elizabeth. Rosamond's loyalties were put to the test when her brother Henry arrived secretly in England with a plan to help the Duke of York to escape to the Continent - a plan in which Rosamond was required to play a leading part. Should she be disloyal to her uncle, who trusted her, or to the heir to the Throne? This was a question only Rosamond could answer - and her final decision was not an easy one." School presentation bookplate on half-title page, small light liquid mark on top of text block, tiny bump at top corners and on fore edge of boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.
