Michael Joseph, London, 1954, second printing.
275 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "John Wetherell was a native of Whitby, one of the thirteen children of Nathan Wetherell, a whaling captain. He was born in 1780, and his father died in 1789 - ki lled, according to Wetherell, in a skirmish with Eskimos in Davis Strait. Wetherell himself died, probably in New York, sometime after 1834. He left behind him an autobiography, in three volumes of manuscript amounting altogether to a thous a n d p a g es. It had been the object of a fruitless search by students of the period until, a few years ago, Mrs Anne Klein of New York, an enthusiastic collector of rare nautical books, discovered it at the New York auction of the library of th e la te Ga br ie l Wells." 2 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Publishers' promotional material laid-in. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top third of both boards and on edges of text bkock, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

202 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0709046049 "The ward settles down for a quiet night. A serene, starched nurse soothes the brow of a grateful patient as the lamplight flickers. Bleep! Cardiac arrest! The crash team lea ps into action, skidding along the corridors, etiquette abandoned in the vital race against time. It is in these frantic seconds that a sister, weighing her responsibilities and priorities, must make efficient, professional decisions - deci s i o n s w h ich could mean the difference between life and death. In her autobiography, Joan Ash contrasts her wartime nursing experiences in India with the National Health Service as she found it on her return in 1973. She shows us the day-to- da y fr us tr a ti on s and joys of nursing, the individuals that people the wards, and the resilient dedication of these latter-day Florence Nightingales." book slightly cocked. Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1970 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
232 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers. "Here is a lively and informative history of Walter J.S. Traill, youngest son of the famous Canadian pioneer settler, Catharine Parr Traill. Born in 1847, (he) left home - near Lakefield in Canada West - at 19 and set out for Prince Rupert's Land as a clerk with the Hudson's Bay Company, and this book is a collection of authentic writings compiled from his letters and journals by his nephew's wife. He tells of the day-to-day life of the Hudson's Bay clerks, of the hardships, the loneliness. The colonists are often hungry, and he recounts occasions when they ate sled dogs to prevent starvation. Traill presents a picture of the Riel rebellion, as he was for a time, a prisoner of Riel in Fort Garry and only released on condition that he left the territory Being a loyal Hudson's Bay man, he is strongly antagonistic to Louis Riel, but the rest of his writing reveals an objectivity and broadmindedness that is astonishing for the Victorian era." 308 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover. ISBN 0802020720 'Literature of Canada - Poetry and Prose in Reprint' series. "(This book), originally published in 1907, is the nearest (Barr) came to writing an autobiographical novel. It concerns the Toronto Normal School and the experiences there in the 1870s of a young man who undoubtedly is Barr himself. In this novel, Barr is exorcising unhappy memories and is ironic, even bitter, about the school's quality of education, the rigid discipli n e o b s e r ved by its staff and their indifference to their students, and the sexual segregation practised...As a realistic study of Ontario's only central teacher-training institution in the late nineteenth century, (it) will appeal both to th os e i nt er es te d in Canadian fiction of the period and to those more concerned with the evolution of the system of education established by Egerton Ryerson. Also included with this reprint of the novel is an essay originally published in 1899 a nd en ti tle d ' Lit era tu re in Canda'. In this essay, Barr elaborated upon his opinions of the school system and its quality of education." Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. NAPOLEON ON NAPOLEON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE EMPEROR., Bonaparte, Napoleon. Edited by Somerset de Chair.
11 Bonaparte, Napoleon. Edited by Somerset de Chair. NAPOLEON ON NAPOLEON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE EMPEROR.
Brockhampton, London, 1998, reprint.
288 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860198767 B&w and colour illustrations. "During the six years of exile on St Helena, between Waterloo and his death, Napoleon dictated momoirs, notes, letters and battle commentaries to the generals who shared his captivity. He then corrected the material himself. Napoleon used his time in captivity to explain the motives, beliefs and doubts that drove him; to analyse strategies which turned France's Revolution into the French Em pire and examine the tactics that made the Grand Army masters of Europe. He recorded his birth at Ajaccio in 1769, and his genteel but impoverished Corsican childhood. He notes his entry at the age of 10 to the military school in Briennes, a n d h i s own early enthusiasm for the Revolution, which lessened in the face of the Terror...In this book, (the editor) has incorporated much new material from three further volumes of notes and miscellanies dictated by Napoleon at St Helena, i n ad di t io n to the four volumes of Memoirs published in 1823. As before, he has let Napoleon speak in the first person throughout, rather than in the more formal third person of the original text. The result is a fascinating account of Napoleo n' s l ife i n h is ow n words, from his childhood in Corsica to his defeat in Waterloo in 1815. Private concerns, such as feuds with his brothers and divorce from Josephine, are mixed with such matters of state as the rebellion of Toussaint-Louv ert ure and the ret rea t fr om Moscow. Over 90 carefully selected illustrations make this a superbly illustrated, detailed autobiography of one of history's great characters." Fine/Near Fine

WEAPONS FREE. THE STORY OF A GULF WAR HELICOPTER PILOT., Boswell, Richard. Foreword by General Sir Peter de la Billiere.
12 Boswell, Richard. Foreword by General Sir Peter de la Billiere. WEAPONS FREE. THE STORY OF A GULF WAR HELICOPTER PILOT.
Crecy, (Manchester, 1998).
216 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and color photographs. "In September 1990 Richard Boswell was a newly qualified helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy, fresh out of flight school and flying one of the most potent fighting helicopters in the world - the Westland Lynx. The world was at his feet in every sense. Then, on the day he and his girlfriend decided to buy a house together, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. With less than 24 hours notice, Richard Boswell was onboard HMS Manchester and en-route to the Gulf and impending war. Once in the Gulf, HMS Manchester prepared for the seaborne invasion that most thought was inevitalbe. Boswell saw action against Iraqi forces, protecting Allied ships and sinking a number of Iraqi gunboats. After the liberation of Kuwait, he flew extensively around the devastated country, when his duties included a spell as pilot for Sir Peter de la Billiere. But his story does not end there. After returning to the UK , Boswell became an instructor and also indulged his passion for flying home-built aircraft, a passion that led to the accident that nearly killed him and ended his days as a Navy pilot. The portrayal of the battle to rebuilt his shattered life is every bit as graphic as his wartime experiences in the Gulf." Minor wrinkling at top of spine - very light at bottom. The autobiography of Rear Admiral Jeffry V. Brock. In volume I he "describes his experiences as a commander of escort groups in the U-boat ridden Atlantic of World War II. Woven through the high adventure of combat are encounters with colourful political and military figures, and the feisty people of Britain. In 1950, Brock was appointed to command the Canadian naval forces sent to Korea. His meetings with General MacArthur are frankly recounted and give a unique view of this larger-than-life figure, and his handling of the Korean conflict." In volume II, "Brock writes of his time on the Directing Staff of the National Defence College of Canada and of fascinating overseas tours. He recalls meeting eminent personages of his day, such as Lord Louis Montbatten and Field Marshal Mont-gomery. He describes four interest-filled years in London as Naval Adviser to the High Commissioner and as Canada's naval representative in Europe. He returned to Canada in 1957, and a few years later was promoted to Rear Admiral. While serving as Vice Chief of Naval Staff in Ottawa, he sensed the distant rumblings of a new confrontation - a confrontation that spelled the end of the R.C.N. as men of Brock's era knew it. Paul Hellyer, the newly appointed Minister of Defence, was steering the federal government toward a plan for the unification of Canada's armed services. Brock, in this hard-hitting, brutally honest section of his memoirs, breaks his two-decade silence with an account of the bureau-cratic engineering which culminated in his forced retirement and the dismissal of a great many loyal officers of senior rank."
