UNDIPLOMATIC NOTES: TALES FROM THE CANADIAN FOREIGN SERVICE., Freifeld, Sidney. Illustrated by Susan Macartney.
5 Freifeld, Sidney. Illustrated by Susan Macartney. UNDIPLOMATIC NOTES: TALES FROM THE CANADIAN FOREIGN SERVICE.
Hounslow Press / Anthony R. Hawke, Willowdale, Ontario, 1990.
194 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0888821263 B&w illustrations. "Behind formal negotiations are events sometimes too hilarious (and human) for academic histories. Beneath serene exteriors are people, who, from time to time, are clowns. And often, the expectations of dignity and protocol only serve to heighten the antics. From his 30-year career, Sidney Freifeld - at various desks at headquarters and in various embassies, up through the ranks, to ambassador - recollects some of these tales. He has gleaned others from colleagues or 'unofficial' files. Among the treats in (this book): Castro's table manners at an impromptu dinner; The circus of incivility created by the arrogance of the Ceausescu clan and their entourage; Calls in the night to deal with Moscow's howling cats; Australian VIPs lost in the bowels of the Chateau Laurier; A Canadian embassy held at gun-point, by a Canadian; and Poetry to protest External's policy on decorations. Legations run like military outposts, the needs of beavers in transit, and the exchange of diplomatic notes over a baseball game are more subjects for 'Undiplomatic Notes'. And for the uninitiated there are some useful chapters on what really, really, goes on." Previous owner's label on front pastedown, bump to bottom edge of pages, small bump to top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Very Good-/Very Good+

Chancellor, London, 2000, reprint.
194 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0753703629 B&w photographs, reproductions. "During the Second World War a number of daring military actions were carried out by Allied and Axis land, sea and air forces against targets carefully selected for their strategic or propaganda values. These raids were as individual in character as the men who carried them out and equally unique in their objectives. (The author) relates more than twenty such operations mounted b y B r i t ish, German, American, Australian, Italian and Canadian forces. Raiding appealed to British military men's psyche - and on the whole, they were good at it. Therefore, 'Raiders' emphasizes attacks mounted by the British because they we re i n vo lv ed i n more theatres of war than any other combatant. (Laffin) examines the qualities of successful raiders, as well as their selection and training, before looking in detail at individual missions. The exploits recorded here range fro m a B rit ish co mma ndo strike against Rommel's supposed HQ in the North African desert in 1941, to the daring surveys of the Normandy beaches in preparation for Operation 'Overlord'; from the German glider-borne assault on the great Belgian fort ress of Ebe n Em ael in 1 940, to SS Colonel Otto Skorzeny's dramatic mission to snatch Mussolini from imprisonment on an Italian mountaintop in 1943. Here are the Gironde river exploit of the Special Boat Service in 1942 when frogmen comman dos c aused ser ious damag e to four large enemy ships, and Operation 'Jericho' in 1944 when a low-level attack by RAF Mosquito bombers blasted a huge hole in the wall of a Gestapo prison in France." ISBN 0297643924 "Roden Cutler's list of honours is long and impressive, but it is his sole decoration, the Victoria Cross, that marks him as a hero. Over 800,000 me n and women served in the Australian armed forces during the Second World War, but only twenty were awarded the V.C. Colleen McCullough vividly shows us the life and times of the young soldier with the dashing good looks, the laconic humo u r a n d d i s like of pretension who came back from the war determined to continue to support his mother, but, having lost a leg, with no idea how to do so. Yet by the age of 29 he was the Australian High Commissioner to New Zealand. His diplo ma ti c c ar ee r w as t o include stints in Ceylon, Egypt during the Suez crisis of 1956, Pakistan and New York. In 1966 he was appointed Governor of New South Wales; during his fifteen years in that office he shared with Captain Arthur Phillip an d L ac hla n M acq ua rie , h e e arned his own niche among them as the 'people's governor'. 549 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(C)hallenges the popular myth about the incompetence and callousness of the Great War generals and examines the events that took place on the Western Front through the eyes of these same officers to explain the circumstances that led them to plan and fight as they did. (Asks) the questions: Why was Britain so unprepared for a European war in 1914?; What role did the British politicians play?; What was the truth behind Anglo-French relations?; Can the Australians and Canadians really take credit for the great victories of the War?; Was the arrival of the American army really decisive?; Was any general really equipped with the knowledge and information to deal with the horrors of trench warfare?; How much of what we now believe about the Great War is true? This thoroughly researched and controversial book shatters many assumptions about the leadership of the Great War and the myth of the Great War generals. It must be read by anyone seeking the real story of the First World War." Tiny bump at corner of boards, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - tiny tear at top, very slight cigarette odor. MORE TALES FROM THE MESS., Noonan, Miles.
12 Noonan, Miles. MORE TALES FROM THE MESS.
Century, London, 1985, first edition.
173 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0712610677 B&w cartoons. "Readers who enjoyed 'Tales From the Mess' will be glad to know that that collection by no means exhausted its compiler's rich fund of anecdotes about the absurder a spects of life in the British army. Further researches have enabled Miles Noonan to assemble this sequel which again, while in no way reducing our admiration for the Nation's armed forces, will not encourage us to regard them with excessiv e s o l e m n i ty. Once again the settings of the tales range geographically from Malaya to Ireland and from South Africa to Liverpool and historically from Victorian times to the present day, and once again Miles Noonan does not vouch for their ab s ol ut e un va rn is hed truthfulness." Book very slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, minor browning at top edge. Very Good+/Very Good

"(R)ecounts the global voyage, and the efforts to uncover the fate, of a hero of 18th century Pacific exploration long familiar with Australians and Europeans, but little known in North America. Count Jean Francois de Galaup, de La Perouse, (now called Laperouse) had a distinguished naval career, serving in the West Indies, Mauritius, the Indian Ocean and North America. He defeated the British off Louisbourg and captured forts York and Prince of Wales on Hudson Bay. His scientific expedition in 1785 rivaled, in popular interest, the space voyages of today. The expedition rounded Cape Horn, sailed north to Chile, Easter Island, and Hawaii, and then explored and charted the coast of today's Alaska and British Columbia. They made their way south to San Francisco before sailing across the Pacific to Macao, the Philippines, Korea and Japan. They charted the Tartary Coast and the Kamchatka Peninsula, the farthest outpost of the Russian Empire. Turning south again, they made for Botany Bay via Samoa. On March 10, 1788, the Boussole and Astrolabe headed north and disappeared. Despite several search parties, it was not until 1827 that evidence of one of the wrecks was discovered by an Irish sea captain named Peter Dillon. It was only in 1962 that Reece Discombe, an expert in underwater salvage, found the flagship. Archaeological teams from Australia, France and Vanuatu continue to probe the wrecks to this day."
