288 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 11 1/4" D). B&w photographs, reproductions. "One hundred and twenty-five years ago eight men met on December 1, 1868, to form the Toronto Astronomical Club. Among them were a tailor, a teacher and a cabinet-maker. How surprised these ordinary citizens would be to see that their little group has grown into an organization of over 3000 members in all parts of the country, in the United States and overseas. Twenty-two cities from St John's to Victoria have local chapters or 'Centres' of the RASC. Novices and naturalists, amateurs and professional scientists all play important roles in this remarkable success story. General readers will be surprised to find out what amateurs can learn from the sky, at meetings and through the Society's publications. Leaders of other volunteer organizations, educators looking for ways to promote greater appreciation of science, and local historians interested in the role of the Society in the life of their communities will find helpful ideas in this book. And members themselves will be better equipped to make decisions for the future through an appreciation of the development of the Society, its individual Centres and the men and women who have led them." Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top rear edge and at bottom of spine, minor rubbing, 2" faint scratch on rear panel.

6 Davis, Richard C., editor. (Sir John Franklin.) SIR JOHN FRANKLIN'S JOURNALS AND CORRESPONDENCE: THE FIRST ARCTIC LAND EXPEDITION, 1819-1822.
Toronto Champlain Society 1995 0969342543 / 9780969342540 Limited Edition Hard Cover Near Fine

B&w illustrations, 3 maps (2 double-page). "This volume contains nearly complete transcriptions of the extant journals kept by John Franklin during his expedition to the unknown northern coast of the North American continent in the years 1819 to 1822. Only a few abstracts and tables of observations from the extant journal books have been excluded, and they, for the most part, are available in the appendices to Franklin's published 'Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea in the Years 1819, 20, 21, and 22'. The present volume also includes transcriptions of a selection of correspondence written during the preparation for and execution of Franklin's first expedition. While most of the letters included here were written by Franklin, some were written by other correspondents to Franklin. A few highly selective pieces were neither written nor recieved by Franklin, but bear special relevance to letters that Franklin wrote. The Introduction provides short biographies of some of the men involved, and then establishes an historical context in which to situate the 1819-22 expedition. The sources of the various documents are next identified, followed by an attempt to understand what brought about the deaths of 11 out of 20 men under Franklin's leadership." Some minor wrinkling to fore-edge of some pages.

ISBN 0804810087 "In two expeditions between 1819 and 1827, Franklin discovered and mapped nearly two thousand miles of arctic coastline; by far the greater part of this was accomplished on the second journey, the subject of the this present 'Narrative'. Franklin's plan for the second expedition was carefully devised to avoid the limited success and costly loss of life experienced by the first party. Dr. John Richardson again accompanied him, as did Lieutenant George Back and the Eskimo interpreter, Augustus. Establishing a base on Great Bear Lake, Franklin descended the Mackenzie River with four boats of his own design. At the mouth, Richardson took two vessels eastward to map the coastline between the Mackenzie and the Coppermine River; Franklin travelled westward to explore the coast as far as Icy Cape on the northwest shoulder of Alaska. He expected to meet Captain Beechey who would be sailing eastward from Icy Cape and thus complete the charts between the Mackenzie and the Pacific. While Richardson carried his task to its successful conclusion, Franklin and Beechey were prevented from meeting by persistent fog and impassable ice fields. Under orders to return to his base before the end of the brief Arctic summer, Franklin reluctantly turned back, leaving an undiscovered gap of only one hundred and fifty miles between himself and Beechey's ship. The two branches of the expedition had together mapped twelve hundred miles of coastline, establishing the commander as a man who would add more to the shape of the continent than any other in history. Franklin's account of the expedition reveals a rugged veracity equal to the task." Appendices: Topographical and Geological Notices, by Dr. Richardson, R.N.; Meteorological Tables, arranged from the Registers kept at Fort Franklin, by the Officers of the Expedition, by Dr. Richardson; Observations on Solar Radiation, by Dr. Richardson; Observations on the Velocity of Sound at different Temperatures, by L ieutenant Kendall, R.N.; Observations for Latitude, Longitude, and Variations, by Captain Franklin, R.N.; Observations relative to the daily Variation of the Horizontal Magnetic Needle, by Captain Franklin; On the Aurora Borealis, by Captain Franklin. 11 Greenway, John L. THE GOLDEN HORNS: MYTHIC IMAGINATION AND THE NORDIC PAST.
Athens University of Georgia Press 1977 0820303844 / 9780820303840 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
226 pp, 9 5/16" H. "As an introduction to modern myth, (this book) masterfully encompasses a wide circle of historical and literary materials. John Greenway examines first the nature of time in the mythic consciousness, then the role of the Nordic past as a myth of origins from the Renaissance through the romantics. Only in the various forms of myth can man find identity, the author argues, and he sees the varying images of the Viking past as unconscious attempts by northern nations to legitimize their own values. Central to (his) methodology is his discussion of the sacred in language not itself sacred and the failure of modern myth to make the primitive distinction between the sacred and the profane. The author establishes the theoretical base of his discussion by examining the nature of time in mythic consciousness in terms of Norse myth. After suggesting several ways in which the mythic apprehension of reality conditioned medieval Icelandic narrative, (he) elaborates on the dialectical relationship between myth and reason, using as an example the conversion of the Germanic tribes to Christianity. Maintaining that myth is neither true nor false but always either expressive or not, Greenway traces the origin, rise, and fall of two great modern myths of northern birth: Swedish Gothicism in the seventeenth century and the Ossianic craze of the eighteenth. Both myths, one social, the other literary, illustrate the singular tension in the modern mind between mythic imperatives and the impulse to de-mythologize. Finally, 'The Golden Horns' traces the romantic belief in a 'new mythology' which synthesizes myth and reason from its early acceptance through its eventual repudiation. In his conclusions about the state of myth in the modern world, Greenway postulates that we have inherited the romantic respect for myth as truth but lack the romantic faith in transcendence necessary to establish myth's reality. We are trapped in a physical and moral world which we, as romantics, recognize to be symbolic in its representations, but we lack a belief in the transcendental reality of these symbols." Edinburgh Birlinn 0739419307 / 9780739419304 Book Club Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
281 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "During the summer of 1941, the Italian journalist and novelist Curzio Malaparte was the only front-line war correspondent in the whole of Russia. His account of events there is not unique for this reason alone: his astonishing eye for detail and intimate knowledge of the country lend his record a depth of understanding rarely found in other war reporting, and his attention to the human dimension of the conflict reveals him to be a man of humanity and compassion. In (this book he) provides a peerless illustration of the human dimension of the Eastern Front. His ability to spot details is uncanny; his ability to build upon them to express the horror and absurdity of war is astonishing. Here you get a complete panorama of the front, with views of civilians in their war-ravaged homes; soldiers readying themselves for battle; and graphic descriptions of the most furious combat of WWII. Expelled from the southern war zone on the orders of Goebbels in September 1941, Malaparte spent four months under house arrest before being sent to cover events in Finland. From there he reported the Siege of Leningrad - one of the seminal events played out on the Eastern Front. This dense, all-encompassing, often poetic chronicle leaves you speechless. It's literally one of a kind." Small wrinkle at top of spine, light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling.
