IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918., Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett.
2 Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett. IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918.
Leo Cooper, London, 1994, revised edition.
159 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850523184 B&w photographs, diagram, map. "Philip Bartlett's account is a unique and fascinating record of a pilot's life in the dawn of aerial warfare and, as a history, of the first use of the bomber in war, strangely, by the Navy's aircraft. Flying by day and night alone, without navigational aids, the author moves from attacks on the U-boat bases to bombing the German Gothas as they prepared to raid London, and then to the s upport of Haig's drive to the coast which ended in the mud of Passchendaele. The climax in March, 1918, is reached when the author's squadron finds itself directly in the path of Ludendorff's massive thrust, which broke the British Vth Ar m y a n d n e a rly decided the War. Attacked by Richthofen's aces, No 5 Squadron RNAS flew continuous desperate missions against the advancing troops from aerodromes which were over-run time after time. At a time when the life of a pilot was re ck on e d in w e ek s, t he author flew 101 missions, enduring the rigours of flying without heat or oxygen, with hesitant engines, no parachutes and the attention of German fighters. Yet there is continual evidence of the pure joy of flying and won der a t the sh ee r b eau ty of the sky." Light browning to top edge of textblock, slight waviness to top/bottom edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top edge. Very Good+/Very Good

HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'., Bassett, Ronald.
4 Bassett, Ronald. HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'.
Arms and Armour, London, 1988, first edition.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0853689113 B&w maps and photographs. "The first HMS Sheffield was launched in 1936 to serve her flag bravely for thirty years. During World War Two, the cruiser became one of the mo st illustrious warships of all time, achieving twelve honours. In 1940, she fought in the action off Cape Spartivento; in the following year she shared in the audacious bombardment of Genoa, exchanged salvoes with Bismarck and sank one of that bat t leship's supply tankers, Friedrich Breme. In the Arctic a mine blew a 22-foot hole in her stern, but in an Icelandic fjord her crew fashioned a makeshift timber patch before steaming her back to Britain to fight again. In 1942, in the Barents Se a, Sheffield was in action against the 'pocket battleships' Admiral Hipper and Lutzow, and sank the German destroyer Friedrich Eckoldt. In 1943 she shared in the destruction of the battlecruiser Scharnhorst off North Cape and later supported carri er attacks upon Tirpitz. These, however, were but the highlights of this distinguished ship's wartime service. This book tells the story of her entire life and of her crews before, during and after World War Two - not from the detached perspective of an 'armchair historian', but from that of a writer who served at that time in a similar cruiser. Ronald Bassett was entrusted with research material accumulated over many years by an officer of Sheffield who died before those records could be turn ed into a book. Hundreds of her crew members, including several of her commanding officers, have contributed to this chronicle by means of their memoirs, diaries, letters, newspaper cuttings and photographs, enabling (the author) to paint an a ccura te and powerfully evocative portrait of a famous ship." Slight bump at bottom of spine, slight waviness to edges of text block, previous owner's label on free front endpaper, book cracked in several palces but page signatures are holding firm ly. D ust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, several small edge tears (two taped) and chips, light rubbing with some slight color loss on rear panel. Very Good-/Good+

Somerton, Somerset Crecy 1992 0947554254 / 9780947554255 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Three small dints on rear board, light rubbing. Dust jacket has three small dints on rear panel, large crease at top corner of rear flap/panel, light edge wrinkling, one tiny closed tear, light rubbing.

Presidio, San Rafael, California, 1980.
198 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0891410821 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The heroism of William Darby and his Rangers in World War II has become legend. Experts at amphibious landings, night attacks, and clos e combat, they led the assaulting troops in the initial North Africa landings, fought in Tunisia, landed through concentrated hell at Gela, and were in on the final kill at Messina. At Sorrento they stood off forces that outnumbered them by a t l e a s t eight to one, and they spearheaded the desperate struggle at Anzio. This is Darby's own story of those climactic days, as dictated, just a few months before his death, to his friend General William H. Baumer. Baumer has added backgr ou nd in fo rm at ion about the war and on Darby's life, plus a summary of the exploits of other Ranger units. Darby was a combat leader in the highest tradition of the United States Army - a forceful, charismatic man who inspired loyalty and in t urn ga v e l oya lty to his troops. He refused battlefield promotions three times in order to stay with his Rangers. During his colorful and brilliant career, he received ten high military decorations, and was posthumously promoted to brigadier gen eral ." 256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." THE BATTLE OF THE AIRFIELDS, 1ST JANUARY 1945., Franks, Norman. Signed.
17 Franks, Norman. Signed. THE BATTLE OF THE AIRFIELDS, 1ST JANUARY 1945.
Grub Street, London, (1994), revised, updated Anniversary edition including new German material.
224 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. SIGNED ON TITLE PAGE BY AUTHOR. B&w photos. "At first light on the morning of Ist January 1945, over 800 Luftwaffe fighters took off from their bases in Germany to attack Allied airfields in Holland, Belgium and France. Some of these surprise attacks proved successful, some were hardly noticed, while others were disastrous for the attackers. Basing his account on information from both Wing and Squadron diaries, and with many first-hand account s from the men who were there, Norman Franks paints a definitive picture of that winter morning and the rest of the day. In these attacks, and in the air battles which were fought at low level across the open countrysides and over towns in t h e L o w Countries, the Luftwaffe lost up to 300 of their fighter aircraft and over 200 pilots were killed or taken prisoner. THE BIG PUSH: A PORTRAIT OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME., Gardner, Brian.
18 Gardner, Brian. THE BIG PUSH: A PORTRAIT OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME.
Cassell, London, 1961, first edition.
177 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "At half past seven on the morning of the first of July 1916, along a front extending for eighteen miles in the valley of the Somme, an intensive bombardment which had conti nued since dawn lifted, and fourteen divisions of British troops stumbled out of their trenches to attack the enemy. This was the climax of Sir Douglas Haig's carefully conceived plan to break the interminable deadlock of trench warfare on th e W e s t ern Front, and score a resounding and dramatic victory over the German forces. Haig's design foundered within a few hours among the defences of Fricourt, La Boisells, and Thiepval, at the appalling cost of twenty thousand British soldier s k il le d an d thirty-five thousand wounded. - But the official dates for The Battle of the Somme are from 1st July to 18th, November 1916. The 'Big Push' went on, the preliminary bombardments, the attacks, the horrifying slaughter - every single c as ual ty be ing measured in terms of individual pain, misery, and sacrifice. Belief in the High Command that prolonged shelling must reduce an entrenched enemy to inertia and impotence, easy prey for advancing infantry, died hard. It persiste d t hro ugho ut the aut umn and into the following year, when the same ghastly pattern was repeated at Passchendaele. It was not fully discredited till the full potential of armoured vehicles was realized and military concepts, bred in minor theat res of w ar be for e th e tur n of the century, were rejected. - (This book) provides a critical, and immensely readable analysis of the policy, planning, and action of the British and French armies at the Battle of the Somme, a battle in which the cas ualti es of the Briti sh arm y alone exceeded those suffered by it during the whole of the Second World War. An important historical account of a great military blunder, it is also a vivid portrait of the tragedy, the unspeakable horror, and t he co urage, which are commo n to an y war at any time, but which were peculiarly intensified in France and Flanders from 1914 to 1918." 19 Graves, Donald E. Additional research by Arthur J. Robinson. GUNS ACROSS THE RIVER: THE BATTLE OF THE WINDMILL, 1838.
Prescott Friends of Windmill Point 2002 1896941214 / 9781896941219 Reprint with minor corrections. Soft Cover Very Good Christopher Johnson, maps - marine art by Peter Rindlisbacher..
263 pp, 8" H x 9" D. B&w photographs, maps, drawings. "In 1838, seeing political turbulence in Canada as an opportunity, members of a clandestine American organization, the Patriot Hunters, launched a series of attacks across the international border. The Hunters hoped to duplicate the success of the Texas rebellion two years before when their heroes Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie fought to establish a republic in northern Mexico. Destesting 'tyranny and oppression wherever manifested', they believed that all it would take was 'a good stand maintained for a short time' by Americans and then Canadians would do their own fighting to win freedom from the British yoke. The most ambitious Hunter attack was launched in November 1838 when a force of more than 500 armed men, commanded by a European soldier of fortune, set out from northern New York in a flotilla of chartered and hijacked vessels. Avoiding the naval and miitary forces of two nations, they occupied a stone windmill near Prescott, Ontario, confident that Canadians would rally to their standard. Their hopes were doomed. After five days of heavy fighting, British regulars and Canadian militia captured this 'Alamo of the North', and those invaders who survived were imprisoned in Fort Henry at Kingston and tried by court martial - eleven were executed and sixty deported to an Australian penal colony. (This book) tells the full story of this bloody but forgotten military action and the undeclared war of which it was a part. (It) traces the rise of the Patriot Hunters in the northern United States, describes their odyssey down the St. Lawrence and provide a detailed account of the five-day battle that followed. (P)acked with fascinating information about a colourful time in North American history and about the men who fought at the windmill - their personalities, tactics, weapons, uniforms, and even the songs they sang." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, slight lean to spine.

20 Green, William. FAMOUS FIGHTERS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR. SECOND SERIES.
London Macdonald 1962 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Peter Endsleigh Castle.
132 pp, 10" H. "(Describes) the deveopment and careers of the last of the fighting biplanes, the little Gloster Gladiator, which carried something of the First World War into that second epic struggle; that indomitable trio of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps fighters, the Wildcat, Hellcat and Corsair, which destroyed the myth of Japanese aerial invincibility founded by the Zero-Sen; the fighter versions of the Junkers Ju 88 whose nocturnal depredations in the R.A.F.'s bomber stream over the Third Reich were so impressive at one period of the War that the abandoning of large-scale night attacks on German targets was seriously considered; the highly manoeuvrable Macchi C.202 Folgore with its beautifully co-ordianted controls - a pilot's aeroplane in every respect; the Japanese Army's equivalent of the Zero-Sen, the Nakamima Ki.43 Hayabusa, and its successor, the Ki.84 Hayate which could out-climb and out-manoeuvre the most advanced versions of the Mustang and Thunderbolt; Heinkel's superlative He 219 night fighter which, but for ministerial muddle and confusion, would have provided the Allies with some serious headaches. These and many other fighters, both successful and unsuccessful, but all 'famous', are surveyed with hundreds of rare photographs, highly detailed full-page tone drawings by Peter Endsleigh Castle, and comparative side views of the many variants of each aircraft by Dennis I. Punnett." Very small bump at top of spine, very small dent/tear on spine near rear hinge, areas of minor browning on endpapers.
