This extraordinary - and extraordinarily beautiful - volume introduces readers to a compendium of animal symbolism that ranks with the greatest of classical and medieval bestiaries. (It) was the life's work of the French Catholic scholar Louis Charbonneau-Lessay, who combed the religious traditions of ancient Egypt, classical Greece and Rome, early and medieval Christianity, Gnosticism, Kabbalah, and alchemy to research it. First published in France at the outbreak of World War II and nearly destroyed in the war's devastations, this masterpiece of scholarship has been translated and abridged (from its original thousand-page length) by D.M. Dooling, the founder and editorial director of 'Parabola: The Magazine of Myth and Tradition', and includes 400 woodcuts by the author." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. A PROSPECT OF ASHRIDGE., Coult, Douglas.
4 Coult, Douglas. A PROSPECT OF ASHRIDGE.
Phillimore, London, 1980.
262 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850333601 Colour and b&w plates. "Founded as the College of Bonhommes, an order of Augustinian canons, in 1283, Ashridge is again a College today, housing the world-renowned Management Co llege, so that after 700 years the wheel has turned full circle. After the monastic period, Henry VIII used Ashridge as an occasional residence for his children, when it provided a backcloth to the uncertainties of their upbringing. The p r o p e r t y p assed to the Princess Elizabeth at her father's death and during Mary's reign must have been the scene of both drama and danger. After its period as a royal residence the Egerton family (Earls and Dukes of Bridgewater) lived at Ash ri dg e fo r se ve r al generations, among them Sir Thomas, Lord Chancellor to James I, the 3rd Duke, known as 'the Canal Duke', and the 7th Earl, who replaced the crumbling monastic buildings with the present fabric. The latter's controversial wil l l ed to th e est ate p ass ing to the earls Brownlow. Later, under the 3rd Earl and his beautiful Countess, Adelaide, Ashridge achieved an elegance of great distinction. After more than three centuries as a home, the estate was sold in the 192 0s a nd bec ame an edu cati ona l fo undation, first as Bonar Law College and then as the present Management College. This vivid and readable account is the first full-length study of the estate for over 150 years; and through his extensive use of cont emp orar y re cor ds an d som e ne w arc hival material the author's prospect of Ashridge has become more than purely local history. Personalities are brought to life against the background of the building in a way that will appeal to a wide circle of reade rs. A pi ece of Chilt ern h istory that often touches on national affairs, this work will be welcomed by many who know and use the Ashridge of today." Minor wrinkle at bottom of spine, tiny faint stain on fore-edge of textblock, faint w ater mark a t bo ttom corner of fron t boar d. Dus t jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing. Very Good/Very Good

THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I., Ferguson, Niall.
5 Ferguson, Niall. THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I.
Basic Books, New York, 1999, book club edition.
563 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, tables, graphs. "More than four million Americans were mobilized in 1917-18, of whom more than 100,000 were killed - double the number who died in Vietnam. This was the fir st, bloody step on the road to globalism which would characterize our foreign policy for the rest of the twentieth century. Even American literature was transformed by the impact of the war on writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Internat i o n a l l y , more than any other event, the First World War made the twentieth century what it was: It toppled the four great empires of the Old World and left a fifth - the British - mortgaged to the hilt. More than nine million men lost their li ve s, y et n on e of its stated objectives were met. Rather, it spawned seven decades of Communist rule in Russia, the rise of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich, and the horror of the Holocaust. Now, as the century draws to a close, the time is righ t f or a r adi cal re ass essment of the 'Great War'. In (this book, the author) explodes the myths of 1914-18. He argues that the fatal conflict between Britain and Germany was far from inevitable. It was Britain's declaration of war that needl essl y t urne d a cont inen tal conflict into a world war, and it was Britain's economic mismanagement and military inferiority that necessitated American involvement, forever altering the global balance of power. Ferguson vividly brings back to li fe on e of the semi nal c atast roph es of the century, not through a dry citation of chronological chapter and verse, but through a series of brilliant chapters that answer the key questions: Why did the war start? Why did it continue? And why did it st op? How d id th e Germ ans ma nage to kill more soldiers than they lost but still end up defeated in November 1918? Above all, why did men fight?" Minor rubbing, tiny bump at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear and minor browni ng o n spin e. Ve ry Good +/Very Good+

KICKING ASS IN CANADIAN POLITICS., Kinsella, Warren. Inscribed.
8 Kinsella, Warren. Inscribed. KICKING ASS IN CANADIAN POLITICS.
Random House Canada, n.p., 2001, first printing.
245 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0679310851 INSCRIBED ON HALF TITLE PAGE: "TO T____ BEST WISHES & MANY THANKS! WARREN NOV. 2001". ALSO INSCRIBED ON VERSO OF FRONT FREE ENDPAPER: "T____, HOPEFULLY MY RETIREMENT WILL BE AS ENJOYABLE AS YOURS, MIKE HARRIS". The second inscription is in two different coloured inks (possibly two different hands). "(F)or the first time, Kinsella lifts the veil on what really goes on inside campaigns - and it's not pretty. This is the good, the bad and the ugly of partisan politics, and Kinsella argues that all three are necessary for a healthy and democratic political dialogue. But this isn't a cynic's book on how to manipulate the voting public. The advice from the Prince of Darkness is 'stay on message, and stick to the truth'. Those practitioners of the black arts who resort to lies and cheating are most often burned at the stake by the voters. And he marshals plenty of evidence and insider stories from the hottest campaigns and campaigners in Canada and the United States - among them, James Carville, Besey Wright, Haley Barbour and Dick Morris - to prove his point. Your'll learn about push-polling, frugging, ratf**king, quick response, dirty tricks and oppo, and you'll learn how to counter them all. You'll be treated to Kinsella's Twelve Handy Tips for Surviving Encounters with Unethical, Unscrupulous, Unprincipled Political Journalists, as well as to his unique rating system on whose political reporting you can trust. This is a must-read not only for political junkies but also for marketers and PR flaks alike: it is a handbook, not only on how to win, but how to make sure your opponent loses." TEDDY, GOLLY AND BUNNY., Wickham, Constance.
13 Wickham, Constance. TEDDY, GOLLY AND BUNNY.
London Collins Hard Cover Very Good A.E. Kennedy.
Unpaginated (approx. 28 pages), 11" H. Undated. Glazed pictorial boards, illustrated throughout with full-page and smaller colour illustrations. Contents: The Runaway Calf; Teddy's Beanstalk; A Lovely Surprise; Teddy's Funny Sums; Three Cheers for Camping. This mid-20th century volume is a product of its times and would cause offense to many, not only for the golliwog character (who, in this case, does not have the thick lips and stand-up hair of the original), but also for one instance of the 'n'-word in a counting rhyme and for Golly calling Teddy a "Silly ass" for making him spill his ink. However, for the most part, the animal, toy and human characters in the stories are seen to work and play together positively. Small ink notation (most likely a child's) and two small scissor cuts (archivally taped) at bottom of title page, very minor edge wear, tiny slight corner bumps.
