2 Brimelow, Peter. THE PATRIOT GAME: NATIONAL DREAMS & POLITICAL REALITIES.
Toronto Key Porter 1986 1550130013 / 9781550130010 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A)rgues that Canada ought to be a second Switzerland, with a living standard actually higher than that of the U.S. But in fact it is embroiled in a tangle of regional and linguistic quarrels, mainipulated by both the Liberals and their Mulroney Tory imitators, and an elite in Ottawa that truly represents neither Anglophones nor Francophones. 'The Patriot Games' offers an unconventional view of Canada that will shatter many myths. Brimelow endorses the argument of Goldwin Smith's 1891 classic 'Canada and the Canadian Question' that our country is 'rich by nature, poor by policy'. He demonstrates that this is a direct consequence of fatally-flawed political institutions, which have created divisive polices like bilingualism and Canadian Nationalism. He shows that, paradoxically, English Canada is the dispossessed and colonized nation within a weakening Confederation. In a provocative portrait of the Trudeau era, he describes how the Liberals imposed an artificial bilingualism policy on an unsuspecting country, alienating the West and having little effect in Quebec. (This book) challenges us to come to terms with what being a Canadian means." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very tiny dent on front hinge..

FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN., Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor.
5 Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor. FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
Castle, Edison, NJ, 2000, reprint.
261 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0785812083 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps/battle plans, cartoons, drawings. "Drawing on the mastery of technical detail he displayed so brilliantly in 'Bomber' (the s tory of an RAF bombing raid), (Deighton) gives us an altogether factual and comprehensive picture of the men, the machines, the strategies (and the blunders), and the events on both sides. He shows us the British squandering precious fighter pl a n e s in a futile effort to halt the German blitzkrieg in France, and the Germans refusing to believe in the effectiveness of British radar. He compares the fire power, combat tactics, and ground control, analyzing the performance of both the pl an es ( th e Messerschmitt broke up in mid-air more often than the Spitfire) and the pilots (men such as the fabled Douglas Bader, who flew better with two artificial legs than other men with two real ones; or 'Onkel Theo' Osterkamp, a WWI German a ce who be cam e an ace in WWII as well, until he was finally ordered off combat flying at the age of forty-eight). We see the British General Staff divided against itself (after the Battle, the man most responsible for the British victory - Sir Hu gh Dowd ing , C om mander in Chief, Fighter Command - was dismissed); the German High Command, unsure of its objectives; exaggerated British claims (and an almost fatal shortage of pilots); and German technical superiority that was continually und erc ut by Nazi in c ompetence." Small Christmas gift inscription on half-title page, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing. 6 Evans, A. Margaret and Barker, C.A.V. CENTURY ONE: A HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO VETERINARY ASSOCIATION, 1874-1974.
Guelph, Ontario Self-published 1976 0969069000 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
516 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs. "Few people appreciate the significant contribution made by veterinarians to the economic importance of the livestock industry, the quality of small animals and the control of diseases affecting public health throughout Canada. The increasing value of such work is largely due to the efforts of the profession itself, particularly in the province of Ontario. Human survival still depends on animals and animal products. To that close relationship the veterinarian brings the benefits of modern science; his professional skill and integrity today defend the economic and physical well-being of all citizens. In a fast-flowing but detailed narrative, the authors review the early years of the O.V.A., its emphasis on high ethical and scientific standards and a long struggle for adequate statutory recognition. These advances have been closely linked to the remarkable role of the Ontario Veterinary College throughout the century. The book also traces the rise of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association to its position of national influence. In Canada, the profession is unique in that close collaboration with all levels of government is constantly required. The control and suppression of rabies is only one example - perhaps the best know to the public." Dust jacket has tiny tear/wrinkling at top of front hinge - archivally taped, minor soiling.

7 Gatland, Kenneth W. and Kunesch, Anthony Ma SPACE TRAVEL.
New York Philosophical Library 1953 Second Impression. Hard Cover Good Good J.W. Wood and R.A. Smith.
205 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, tables. "Here, described with enthusiasm and authority, is not only the whole history of rocket development from the days of the first discovery of an explosive mixture before the birth of Christ, but also the latest information on the harnessing of the tremendous new propellants available today, which may soon make journeys into space a commonplace of human life. Both (authors) are technical experts in their own fields. While their working hours are concerned with terrestrial problems, their scientific curiosity and knowledge are also beamed into the outer reaches of the Ether. They have accordingly produced a series of blueprints for the construction of an artificial satellite freely revolving in its own orbit around the Earth, and for the great liners which will take off from it on their flashing journeys to starry destinations in our own solar system and even, perhaps, beyond. There are nearly 100 (illustrations): historical records of early experiments, magnificent modern photographs of the latest achievements, and in addition a series of exciting drawings, specially made for the book, of space stations and space ships, which not only fire the imagination, but are precise in every detail." Light to moderate edge wear, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, 1" bump/creases at bottom edge of rear board, two tiny corner bumps. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge, one or two tiny edge tears archivally taped, light rubbing, minor soiling, very small bump to bottom edge of text block.

DIE HARD! DRAMATIC ACTIONS FROM THE NAPOLEONIC WARS., Haythornthwaite, Philip J.
8 Haythornthwaite, Philip J. DIE HARD! DRAMATIC ACTIONS FROM THE NAPOLEONIC WARS.
Arms and Armour, London, 1996.
256 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1854092456 B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "This collection of ten Napoleonic actions has been created to demonstrate just some of the features of warfare from that period. The natura l drama of those days at Marengo, Eylau, Albuera and Waterloo needs no invented scenes, no artificial inflation of the leadership shown, no exaggeration of individual courage, and, realising that, (the author) allows the facts to stand alone. H e p r ovides the detail required to comprehend the complexities of Napoleonic warfare and sources needed to aid further study; his empathetic style encourages the reader into the position of the men of the 57th who responded to the words of thei r c ol o ne l at Albuera ('Die hard, 57th, die hard!')." Slight bump at top/bottom of spine, small light stain on top of text block, remainder mark (dots) on bottom of text block and front board. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of sp i ne and a lon g top edge - mainly on rear panel, very light rubbing and small faint line indentations on panels. Very Good/Very Good

A HISTORY OF DIDSBURY., Million, Ivor R. Foreword by Lady Simon of Wythenshawe.
10 Million, Ivor R. Foreword by Lady Simon of Wythenshawe. A HISTORY OF DIDSBURY.
Didsbury Civic Society / E. J. Morten, Didsbury, Manchester, 1969, reprint.
142 pp, 8vo (8 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "In this book the author presents the results of research he has made into the history of a more than usually interesting suburb of a great city (Manchester), based not so much on the work of earlier writers as on the inspection of original documents wherever they might have been. It was inevitable that a quest so detailed should have yielded a crop of original discoveries. How many people know that the artificial banks of the River Mersey date back to the thirteenth century; that armies of both Cavaliers and Roundheads mustered on the very land where Didsbury Library stands or that, in 1651, an army of invading Scots was routed on Didsbury Golf Course where many of them lie buried today? Mr. Million has taken nothing for granted and does not ask his readers to take anything on trust. His book is liberally provided with quotations from original sources, many of which have never previously been published. There ar e few districts in the country of which so comprehensive a history has been written." Gift inscription on verso of front free endpaper, minor browning to edges of textblock, very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. BARON MUNCHAUSEN AND OTHER COMIC TALES FROM GERMANY., Raspe, R.E. and Others. Edited by Stella Humprhies.
12 Raspe, R.E. and Others. Edited by Stella Humprhies. BARON MUNCHAUSEN AND OTHER COMIC TALES FROM GERMANY.
London J.M. Dent & Sons 1971 0460050966 / 9780460050968 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Ulrik Schramm.
110 pp, 8 1/2" H. Red & white pictorial endpapers, light brown boards, repeating the pattern from the endpapers in red, with titling in dark purple on spine and front board. Colour plates and b&w drawings. One of the Children's Illustrated Classics series. "The most familiar of the traditional humorous tales from Germany concern the foolish Men of Schilda, the playful rascal Till Eulenspiegel, and the supreme genius of the tall story, Baron Munchausen. All these characters feature in this attractively illustrated C.I.C. edition. It includes the original Munchausen tales written in English by R.E. Raspe and published in 1785, and also the most famous tales of his imitators. The wholly fantastic travels, campaigns and adventures of the noble Baron can hardly have hoped to convince their readers. They are purest tall-tale nonsense, intriguing to practically every young reader of about seven to eleven in their flights of imaginative fancy. The Baron himself is happily shot as a human cannonball far above the town, attempts to climb to the moon on a quick-growing bean of his own sowing, boasts of encountering a stag with a cherry-tree growing between its antlers, explains how, though his horse was cut in two, he continued to ride on one half only. The famous tales of the hinged cranium and of General Bruin are also included. Such is the fabric of this volume of inspired nonsense." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling, small ghost sticker mark on front flap.
