1 Axelrod, Alan, commentary. Arrangements by Dan Fox. SONGS OF THE WILD WEST.
New York Metropolitan Musem of Art / Simon & Schuster 1991 0671747754 / 9780671747756 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
128 pp, oblong large 8vo (9 1/2" H x 10 3/4" D). Decorated endpapers, profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photographs, reproductions. "Nothing captures the spirit of the Old West better than the jaunty tunes and classic ballads the cowboys and settlers sang, songs richly represented in this visually stunning volume. Panoramic in scope, the 45 songs, coupled with works of art from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming, chronicle the stirring saga of westward expansion and reflect every facet of life during one of the most exciting periods in our nation's history. The lore of the West intrigued many artists, and the works featured include paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, and N.C. Wyeth, as well as a myriad of fascinating artifacts: saddles, spurs, guns, guitars, a stagecoach ticket, a Navajo blanket, and other objects that provide a vivid picture of life in the West. A lively and intriguing text further illuminates this bygone world, exploring the history of the songs, their lyrics, the accompanying art, and the development of the West. The music, arranged for beginning to intermediate musicians and accompanied by chords for the guitar or banjo, is suitable for piano, organ, violin, or recorder." Includes: Across the Wide Missouri; The Big Corral; Billy the Kid; Blood on the Saddle; The Boll Weevil; Bucking Bronco; Buffalo Gals; The Buffalo Hunters; Bury Me Not in the Lone Prairie; Cavalry Charge; Chopo; Cielito Lindo; Cindy; The Colorado Trail; Cotton-Eyed Joe; The Cowboy; Cowboy Jack; Cowboy Lullaby; The Cowboy's Lament; The Day of '49; Down in the Valley; Git Along, Little Doggies; Goodbye, Old Paint; Ho! AMONG THE GENTLY MAD: PERSPECTIVES AND STRATEGIES FOR THE BOOK HUNTER IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY., Basbanes, Nicholas A.
2 Basbanes, Nicholas A. AMONG THE GENTLY MAD: PERSPECTIVES AND STRATEGIES FOR THE BOOK HUNTER IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY.
New York Henry Holt 2002 0805051597 / 9780805051599 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
250 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(A) delightfully discursive twenty-first-century guide to book collecting that combines a fresh respect for proven methods of acquisition with sound advice on how to use the exciting electronic tools now available. Drawing on the superb insight he has gathered from some of the world's most notable collectors, dealers, and librarians, (the author) offers a penetrating consideration of the pastime as it enters an era in which 'everything', it seems, has become collectible, an era in which the computer has become an indispensable tool. For newcomers, this book presents the rare opportunity to look over the shoulders of accomplished book hunters, all with their own successful strategies, as they pursue their prey, to glean some invaluable tips from the pros. Along with conveying the thrill of the chase, their stories remind readers that good books bought shrewdly are 'always' wise inventments. Traditionalists who believe that preparation and knowledge remain the soundest foundations for success will not be disappointed by Basbane's contention that for all the wonders of the Internet, there is still no substitute for going out into the field, meeting up with kindred spirits at book fairs, open shops, auctions, and flea markets, and learning how to 'handle the goods' from people who have been there. At the same time, he questions the relevance of a few axioms that have been accepted as gospel, while explaining the timeless wisdom of others." Tiny bump at top of front hinge, tiny scuff at top edge of front board. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES., Brewer, Priscilla J.
6 Brewer, Priscilla J. SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES.
Hanover, NH University Press of New England 1986 0874513626 / 9780874513622 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
273 pp, large 8vo (89 1/4" H). B&w photographs, tables. "Athough we know much about Shaker furniture, dance, textiles, and various artifacts, few books tell us about the Shakers as real people and the inner social workings of their sect. Who were the Shakers? What were their social, economic, and religious backgrounds? Why did they join this celibate, communal sect, and why did some leave while others stayed? What did they think of life inside the communities and the rapidly changing world outside? And, perhaps most important, when and why did the sect begin to decline, and how did Believers adjust to this decline? These are some of the questions Priscilla Brewer addresses in this engaging social history. Her highly readable general introduction to the Shakers challenges basic assumptions about the timing and reasons for the group's decline. Brewer studies the Shaker movement from its founding in 1774 to its last major public statement in 1904, restricting her work to the eleven Shaker communities in eastern New York and New England. (She) provides an inside look at Shaker life by recounting the group's social organization, the occupational roles of its members, the composition of its communities, and the operation of the Shaker hierarchy. Far from being a dry, sociological study, this book is filled with anecdotes and revealing stories related by the Shakers through the many writings they left behind." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny foxing mark on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, slight fading to spine color.

"Mummies, dinosaurs, Persian textiles, exotic fishes, European bronzes, fossils, early Canadian furniture, artifacts of the Native peoples of Canada, rare Chinese ceramics, and a Ming tomb with its guardian figures - all these and much more are to be found in the galleries of the Royal Ontario Museum. (This book) gives a vivid account of the origins and growth of this impressive institution, which each year touches the lives of hundreds of thousands, from researchers to school classes thronging the galleries, to senior citizens involved in special programs. (The author) uses a biographical framework for the story of this exciting institution. First on the scene are the founders, such memorable figures as Sir Edmund Walker and Charles Trick Currelly. Then come the early directors, curators, and technicians, whose research and discoveries in every branch of the natural sciences and art and archaeology contributed to the Royal Ontario Museum's growing international reputation. In the aftermath of World War II a new generation of museum men and women took up the challenge of keeping the Royal Ontario Musuem one of the last combined science and art and archaeology musuems of first rank in the world. The unfolding story, with accomplishements, stresses, and strains interwoven, is captivating." One tiny corner bump, tiny bump at top/bottom of spine, tiny dent on front board. 96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w and color illustrations. "Sorcerers incanting over boiling cauldrons, a witch disguised as a goose, vicious poltergeists, a woman-warrior, a dangerous enchantress - these are a few of the beings that inhabit Canada's rich folklore tradition. (This) is Edith Fowke's selection of Canadian historical legends, of British and French origin, illustrated with artifacts from the collections of the Royal Ontario Museum. Of historical legends Fowke writes, 'They are more apt to be linked to a particular place or situation, and therefore reflect a country's history and culture more than other folktales'. Although native legends are often regarded as a separate study, they sometimes share motifs with non-native lore: Tecumseh, like King Arthur and Charlemagne, is a figure who in legend will one day return to lead his people. (This book) combines historical chronicle and artifact to bring to life a vanished past and the voices of those who told the tales." A few very tiny scuffs on bottom edge of boards. SKY GODS: THE SUN AND MOON IN ART AND MYTH., Komaroff, Katherine.
20 Komaroff, Katherine. SKY GODS: THE SUN AND MOON IN ART AND MYTH.
New York Universe Books 1974 0876631871 / 9780876631874 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
86 pp, 11 5/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "Ever since the beginning of time, man has wondered about the meaning and behavior of the sun and moon. He has carefully observed their cycles and realized their importance for his own survival. The close contact with nature that ancient man enjoyed made him more conscious of their presence, whether he lived in a place constantly warmed by the sun or in a bitter cold world where the sun seemed far away. Ancient men tried to explain the meaning of this mysterious phenomenon in stories closely related to their own lives and religious beliefs. The Hindu people of India thought that the sun was a red man with four arms in a golden chariot. For the Egyptians, the sun was a great watchful eye. The North American Indians said that the moon was a great ball of light tossed into the sky by a clever creature called Raven. The Eskimos believed that the moon was a powerful hunter who often stood in front of his igloo. These stories, called myths, are handed down from generation to generation, and celebrate the great mystery of life. They are loved because of their beauty and power and also for what they tell us about people of other cultures. In 'Sky Gods', myths from India, Egypt, Africa, Japan, China, the Eskimos, and the Indians of North and South America are lucidly retold and illustrated with stunning photographs of art and artifacts from the various cultures. There is a common message behind all these stories. Although the masks, paintings, statues, and other works of art also vary - some are relatively simple, others are highly sophisticated - yet they all contain clues to a deeper understanding of the beauty and mysteriousness of the universe." Two large diagonal creases on free rear endpaper, light stain along bottom edge of rear board, very small light stain on top edge of front board, one soft corner crease. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine, light rubbing and two light scuff lines on rear panel, small stain at inside bottom edge of rear panel, one small edge tear.
