467 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)akes readers from the Bohemian capital's thousand-year-old castle to the bomb shelters of London, from the desolate prison ghetto of Terezin to the highest councils of European and American government. Albright reflects on her discovery of her family's Jewish heritage many decades after the war, on her Czech homeland's tangled history, and on the stark moral choices faced by her parents and their generation. Often relying on eyewitness descrip-tions, she tells the story of how millions of ordinary citizens were ripped from familiar surroundings and forced into new roles as exiled leaders and collaborators, victims and killers. These events of enormous complexity are nevertheless shaped by concepts familair to any growing child: fear, trust, adaptation, the search for identity, the pressure to conform, the quest for independence, and the difference between right and wrong. At once a deeply personal memoir and an incisive work of history, 'Prague Winter' serves as a guide to the future through the lessons of the past - as seen through the eyes of one of the international community's most respected and fascinating figures." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds.

DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN., Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian.
15 Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian. DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN.
Midland Counties, (Leicester, 1988).
200 pp, 4to (12 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Few nations in history came into the world so empty-handed as Pakistan. Born at the stroke of midnight on 14 August 1947, it's bounded in the east by India, in the north by China and the Soviet Union and in the west by Afghanistan and in the south-west by Iran. More recently a simmering war - perhaps the most astonishing one of all - goes on at heights of more than 20,000 feet, in the great H imalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges of northern Pakistan. On its North-West Frontier, the Afghans of the Soviet puppet-regime in Kabul raid and harass Pakistan border posts and villages in the Hindu Kush and the mountains of the famous K h y b e r P a ss. They meet indomitable defence. Yet all it had at the start was courage - and the formidable legacy of the martial Muslims of Asia: pride, discipline, efficiency and unquenchable faith. Out of this came inspired performance. Th is i s th e f ul l, remarkable story of the bravest of the brave...the story of how a frail young nation, born amid tumult and bloodshed, threatened on all sides, transformed itself into a major fighting machine." MEN AT ARNHEM., Angus, Tom.
16 Angus, Tom. MEN AT ARNHEM.
Leo Cooper, London, (1977), reprint.
208 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850522153 B&w maps, organization chart. "Tom Angus sets out to apportion no blame, nor does he seek to analyse the reasons for the failure of the operation. His aim is simply to describe w hat it was like to be a 30-year old company commander during those eight days in hell. For obvious reasons, the characters are not all drawn straight from life. The names are changed and he does not specify the units concerned. But the e v e n t s h e describes did happen just where and when and how he describes them; so if this is not a conventional work of military history nor is it by any means fiction. It is a remarkable and intensely moving account of one of those great mi li ta ry t ra ge d ie s w hich only the British seem able to turn into triumphs, and as a book it certainly triumphs over all conventional accounts of that blood-drenched sacrifice that was the Battle of Arnhem. It is also the finest evocation of an inf ant rym an' s w ar to b e published for many years and will become a classic in its field." 17 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Publishers' promotional material laid-in. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top third of both boards and on edges of text bkock, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

THE ROYAL AIR FORCE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY., Armitage, Michael.
18 Armitage, Michael. THE ROYAL AIR FORCE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
London Brockhampton 1996 1860198511 / 9781860198519 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
288 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps. "Created in 1918 from the former Royal Flying Corps, the RAF forged its own traditions as it developed the tactics and weap- onry of aerial warfare. It ended the First World War with a strength of 300,000 personnel and 23,000 aircraft, but there was the immediate threat of stringent post-war defence budgets and an Army and Navy that demanded that air power be under their control. The Chief of Air Staff, Trenchard, needed a successful example of the potential of air power in order to guarantee future funding, and it came in the RAF air-policing role in the Near East. The RAF was perhaps the most neglected armed force during the 'appeasement years', despite vocal opposition and foreign militarization. After desperate rearm-ament in both aircraft and ground forces, the RAF stemmed the tide of German expansion in the Battle of Britain. The author devotes one third of the book to the superb record of the RAF throughout the Second World War, acknowledging the problems in command, strategy and aircraft equipment that appeared in all theatres during the fight against the Axis forces. Chapters cover the lean years from 1940 to 1942 with the RAF over-committed on all fronts, through the gradual build-up with improved aircraft and on to the heavy bombing campaign and the final, comprehensive air assault on Germany. The years 1944-1945 mark the high point of RAF history, but the factual framework continues with details of the appearance of jet aircraft, the deployments worldwide as the British Empire evolved into the Commonwealth and the RAF's changing tactical and strategic roles as Britain declined from 'superpower' status. This period also includes an appraisal of the V-bomber force, the slow decline in British research and development, the emergence of the RAF role in NATO and the balance of power during the Cold War. The history of the RAF is fully detailed up to the present as one receding threat causes significant change in the number and type of aircraft needed to face the perceived new problems posed by developing nations." Tiny scuff on bottom of rear board. Dust jacket has minor wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one tiny edge tear, very small dint on rear hinge, two tiny dints on rear panel, minor rubbing.

Rockbridge, Charlottesville, Virginia, 1999, first edition.
378 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1883522153 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "Regarded as anonymously written fiction when it was originally published in 1864, this rollicking story of the way it was in the Union 's Army of the Potomac is a thinly disguised tale of truth. It is, in fact, a scathing attack on the character and military ability of Gen. Andrew Atkinson Humphreys. The author, Lt. Col. William H. Armstrong of the 129th Pennyslvania Voluntee r I n fantry, risked a libel action to send his message, yet he recognized that abuses within the system could not be addressed without first being exposed. The tale also includes a vivid, firsthand description of the brutal history of the 129th a nd th e Tyler Brigade and poignant stories of its men - Frederick B Arner's perceptive and comprehensive commentary identifies the main players and units and taps primary sources that support Armstrong's point of view - A masterpiece of historic sl eut h ing a nd disciplined research, this volume may change the way some historians view General Humphreys." " 'If there is no objection, I will take my Division tomorrow and go to Gettysburg.' With these words Major- General Henry Heth set in train the course of events culminating in the titanic clash around the small Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. On 1 July two Confederate Corps swept towards this strategic crossroads as Federal troops fought a desper a t e d e l aying action. The men of the Army of Northern Virginia were the best in the Confederacy. Under Robert E. Lee they had whipped every Federal force sent against them, and they were confident this time would be no exception. As the firs t at ta c ks s we pt forward full of confidence they were met by a storm of fire. Judging from the determination of their bluecoated adversaries this was going to be no ordinary fight."
