THE ROYAL AIR FORCE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY., Armitage, Michael.
4 Armitage, Michael. THE ROYAL AIR FORCE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
London Brockhampton 1996 1860198511 / 9781860198519 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
288 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps. "Created in 1918 from the former Royal Flying Corps, the RAF forged its own traditions as it developed the tactics and weap- onry of aerial warfare. It ended the First World War with a strength of 300,000 personnel and 23,000 aircraft, but there was the immediate threat of stringent post-war defence budgets and an Army and Navy that demanded that air power be under their control. The Chief of Air Staff, Trenchard, needed a successful example of the potential of air power in order to guarantee future funding, and it came in the RAF air-policing role in the Near East. The RAF was perhaps the most neglected armed force during the 'appeasement years', despite vocal opposition and foreign militarization. After desperate rearm-ament in both aircraft and ground forces, the RAF stemmed the tide of German expansion in the Battle of Britain. The author devotes one third of the book to the superb record of the RAF throughout the Second World War, acknowledging the problems in command, strategy and aircraft equipment that appeared in all theatres during the fight against the Axis forces. Chapters cover the lean years from 1940 to 1942 with the RAF over-committed on all fronts, through the gradual build-up with improved aircraft and on to the heavy bombing campaign and the final, comprehensive air assault on Germany. The years 1944-1945 mark the high point of RAF history, but the factual framework continues with details of the appearance of jet aircraft, the deployments worldwide as the British Empire evolved into the Commonwealth and the RAF's changing tactical and strategic roles as Britain declined from 'superpower' status. This period also includes an appraisal of the V-bomber force, the slow decline in British research and development, the emergence of the RAF role in NATO and the balance of power during the Cold War. The history of the RAF is fully detailed up to the present as one receding threat causes significant change in the number and type of aircraft needed to face the perceived new problems posed by developing nations." Tiny scuff on bottom of rear board. Dust jacket has minor wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one tiny edge tear, very small dint on rear hinge, two tiny dints on rear panel, minor rubbing.

BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881., Beeler, John.
6 Beeler, John. BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881.
Caxton, London, 2003, reprint.
224 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840675349 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, plans. "The 1870s and 1880s have traditionally been seen as the 'Dark Ages' of British warship design, where techn ological conservatism and a lack of any definite design policy produced a confusing mix of ship types, with armament and machinery which were outmoded before the ships were even completed. This new book, however, is a powerful refutation of t h a t v i ew, expanding the scope of its study of the ships of this period beyond the narrowly technological to reveal the full range of strategic, logistical and administrative factors which influenced warship development, arguing that it is her e th at t h e or igins of the modern battleship can be found. The author gives an insight into the difficulties faced by warship designers in an age of rapid technological change, and sets out the valid strategic and technical reasons that lay beh in d s uch se em in gly 'reactionary' policies as the fitting of sails in cruising ironclads, and the Navy's retention of muzzle-loading guns well into the 1880s. Far from having no plan, it is shown that the warship designers of this period had a v ery clea r id ea of the types of ship required to meet the range of roles the Royal Navy was called upon to fulfill in defence of a global empire, and that the problems that the ships of this period had owed more to political, financial and admi nist rati ve pr essur es tha n an y lack of competance on the part of their designers." Dust jacket has some areas of minor edge wrinkling, one tiny tear archivally taped. Fine/Near Fine

8 Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Group Captain T.P. Gleave. Dust jacket art by Rex Flood. HURRICANE AT WAR.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, 1974, first edition.
160 pp, 11 1/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711005648 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "The Hawker Hurricane has a permanent niche in the annals of military aviation history as the world's first operational eight-gun monoplane fighter and the RAF's first front-line fighter to achieve more than 300mph in level flight. But it has received little credit for its subsequent lion's share of the defence of the United Kingdom during the 1940 Battle of Britain, and its later serv ice in a score of fighting roles across every theatre of operations during the 1939-45 war. In this book the author sets out to redress this omission in due recognition of the Hurricane's magnificent record. With a collation of authentic, firs t - h a nd impressions and experiences by the men who flew and serviced the Hurricane, backed by a unique collection of specially selected photographs, many from private sources, he has recreated the genuine atmosphere of Hurricane operations. This a ma lg am of text and photographs traces the story of the Hurricane and its crews from the first prototype and pre-1939 service to France 1940; through the Battle of Britain; in the frozen wastes of North Russia; over beleagured Malta; across Sic ily an d G ree ce and as far afield as the Burmese jungle. There are pilots' accounts of low-level bombing sorties covering the disastrous Dieppe invasion, a personal story by the only fighter pilot of World War II to be awarded the Victoria Cross , an d pi ctor ial sections illustrating the armament, markings and, especially, the men who knew the Hurricane best - the crews." Multiple creases at bottom of pages 27 thru 40. very small crease/bump at top corner of pages 83 thru 102, light wrin kling at t op/bo ttom of spine, one tiny corner bump, small shallow bump and a tiny scuff at top edge of rear board. 9 Bowyer, Michael J.F. 2 GROUP R.A.F. A COMPLETE HISTORY, 1936-1945. (RAF)
Somerton, Somerset Crecy 1992 0947554254 / 9780947554255 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Three small dints on rear board, light rubbing. Dust jacket has three small dints on rear panel, large crease at top corner of rear flap/panel, light edge wrinkling, one tiny closed tear, light rubbing.

13 Chandler, David, general editor. Ian Beckett, associate editor. THE OXFORD ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE BRITISH ARMY.
Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1994.
493 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, reproductions, color plates. "From longbow, pike, and musket to Challenger tanks, from the Napoleonic Wars to the Gulf campaign, the Duke of Marlborough to Field Marshal Montgomery, (this book) recounts the history of the British Army from its medieval antecedents to the present day. Drawing on the latest scholarship, this survey shows how British fighting forces have evolved over the last five centuries. The continuities revealed are sometimes surprising: narrow recruitment patterns, friction between soldiers and civilians, financial constraints and recurrent political pressure for economies are constant themes. Commanders, campaigns, battles, organization, and weaponry are covered in detail within the wider context of the social, economic, and political environment in which armies exist and fight."
