NICHOLAS HILLIARD., Auerbach, Erna.
2 Auerbach, Erna. NICHOLAS HILLIARD.
Boston Boston Book & Art Shop 1964 Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Nicholas Hilliard.
352 pp, small 4to (10" H). Over 200 reproductions of Hilliard's work, mainly in b&w. "This is the first full-length monograph to be written on the life and work of Nicholas Hilliard who lived from 1547 to 1619. The first English-born painter to gain the status of an artist recognised by the English court, he was painter, limner, engraver and goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I and later to James I, and is kown to have also painted portraits in oil, but it is difficult to attribute particular oil portraits to his hand. Hilliard's importance is not limited by his performance as a miniaturist, for the style of his miniatures had a major influence on the general trend of English painting, and dominated the manner of contemporary English portraiture, both life-size and miniature. (He) was equally eminent as a goldsmith and he practised this craft throughout his life. Much new biographical material has been found which establishes Hilliard as a great Elizabethan." Small bump to top corners of boards, minor browning to page edges. Dust jacket is moderately browned - mainly on inside surface, is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly to top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

WALL OF ENGLAND: THE CHANNEL'S 2000 YEARS OF HISTORY., Brandford, Ernle.
4 Brandford, Ernle. WALL OF ENGLAND: THE CHANNEL'S 2000 YEARS OF HISTORY.
Country Life, London, 1966, first edition.
112 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, reproductions. "(V)ividly describes how the 350-mile-long English Channel has moulded the fate of Britian since, some 8,000 years ago, the Atlantic tide-race eventually severed our island from the Continent. Through the centuries it has been the moat against many enemies, the arena of battling navies, the highway of trade, the jumping-off point for countless ventures across the world, the way of life of a great maritime race. On the 'Chops of the Channel' Britain has fought not only against the might of foreigners - French, Spanish, Dutch - but also against the natural hazards of gale and fog. Throughout the long Age of Sail and after, na v a l n e e ds and the demands of traders decided the varying fortunes of towns and dockyards of the coast - the Cinque Ports, Southampton, Portsmouth, Plymouth - and it was a passion for the 'new-fangled sea bathing' that started the growth of the ' wa te r in g re sorts' from former fishing villages. (The author) tells of the activities of the press gang, the long struggles between smugglers and Excisemen and the spread of the sport of yachting in the 'off-shore island of Europe'....No lon ger th e s up rem e bas tion against an enemy in these days of nuclear threat, the English Channel, whose last great occasion was the D-Day invasion of Normandy, is restricted to battles of trade." Light soiling on top/bottom edges of boards, two smal l bu mps to bott om edg e of rear board, very light edge wear. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor wear at bottom of spine, light fading to spine color. Very Good/Very Good

178 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. INSCRIBED AND DATED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. ISBN 0851774776 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions, drawings, colour plates. "Contrary to popular opinion, the defeat of the Armada was not the end of the Spanish Navy as a major maritime power. Indeed it underwent a real renaissance in the eighteenth century, and at the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars was the third largest navy in the world. Its ships were well designed and superbly built, and were officered by brave and dedicated professionals, who were nowhere near as ineffective in combat as often represented. This is the first English language book to look at Spanish naval forces in the century before Trafalgar, an d p r o v i des a long overdue reassessment of the aims and achievements of the service. Following a brief overview of the factors which shaped development and the main maritime events, more detailed chapters cover Spanish warship design and const ru c ti on , an d the much-maligned officer corps, concluding with sections on the battle itself and its significance to Spain....It is illustrated throughout with contemporary plans, paintings and ship models, and will prove stimulating reading for la ym an and s pec ia list alike." 80 pp, 12 7/8" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, cutaways, profiles and diagrams. At the outbreak of World War II, "Germany had the finest (air power) in the world, deployed in optimum formations and available in vast quantities. The German aviation industry surpassed the world in ingenuity and in production technique. The products were classic: Stuka dive-bombers, Messerschmitt fighters, Junkers and Dornier bombers. There were excellent seaplanes, giant trans-ports, observation aircraft and trainers. They were to develop rocket power and jets, and at the time of their defeat they were on the brink of revolutionizing aircraft design. Indeed, many of the post-war jets of America and Russia owed their origins to German wartime designs. This volume surveys the vast armada of German warplanes of World War II and illustrates the major types in brilliant color drawings and photographs, with many technical descriptions and diagrams." Though himself enslaved, he stood with his comrades and masters against a coming onslaught." 19. Kajira of Gor - 446 pp, 1st printing, 1983, ISBN 0879978074 - "Kajira means slave-girl in Gorean. But when Tiffany Collins was kidnapped from Earth and brought to that orbital counter-world, she found herself on the throne of a mighty city as its 'queen'. Power seemingly was hers, and she did not realize that her true role was that of a slave puppet of a conniving woman agent of the monstrous Kurii." 21. Mercenaries of Gor - 446 pp, 2nd printing, 1985, ISBN 0886770181 - "War on Gor is a rousing and fearful affair - and when the armada of Cos landed and began its sweeping arch against the mighty city of Ar, Tarl Cabot was swept up in their drive. Outcast from Port Kar, rejected by the Priest-Kings, Tarl fought now for his own redemption." 22. Dancer of Gor - 479 pp, 2nd printing, 1985, ISBN 0886771005 - "Doreen Williamson appeared to be a quiet shy librarian, but in the dark of the library, after hours, she would practice, semi-nude, her secret studies of belly-dancing. Until, one fateful night, the slavers from Gor kidnapped her. On that barbarically splendid counter-Earth, Doreen drew a high price as a dancer in taverns (until) each of her owners became aware that their prize dancer was the target of powerful forces - that in the tense climate of ongoing war between Ar and Cos, Doreen was too dangerous to keep."
