69 pp, + large b&w plate section (photographs, reproductions), 11 7/8" H. Dark blue cloth with gold lettering on spine, gold crest on front board. "(C)elebrates the quincentenary of the introduction of printing at Oxford with a pictorial history of its subsequent progress, illustrated by the books, documents, and pictures which are its tangible record. The story, although it properly begins with the arrival of Theodoric Rood and the first learned and educational books that he printed, stretches back to the early thirteenth century when scribes, illuminators, and binders of books were already found in Oxford; but it was not until the seventeenth century that, at the initiative of two great men, Archbishop Laud and Bishop Fell, the University Press in its present form was established. It is the dark, dominant figure of John Fell, Dean of Christ Church, and then Bishop of Oxford, who emerges as the real founder of the University Press, and the man who determined the type of books which still preoccupy the Press: learned and educational books, and the Bible." Tiny soiling mark on top of text block, small shallow bump to top of both boards. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has old tape repairs at top/bottom inside of spine and flap-folds, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small surface paper loss on front panel, minor soiling.

THE PHILOSOPHER AND THE DRUIDS: A JOURNEY AMONG THE ANCIENT CELTS., Freeman, Philip.
5 Freeman, Philip. THE PHILOSOPHER AND THE DRUIDS: A JOURNEY AMONG THE ANCIENT CELTS.
New York Simon & Schuster 2006 978074326280 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
221 pp, 8 11/16" H. B&w maps, photographs. "Early in the first century B.C. a Greek philosopher named Posidonius began an ambitious and dangerous journey into the little-known land of the Celts. A man of great intellectual curiosity and considerable daring, (he) traveled from his home on the island of Rhodes to Rome, the capital of the expanding empire that had begun to dominate the Mediterranean. From there he planned to investigate for himself the mysterious Celts, reputed to be cannibals and savages. His journey would be one of the great adventures of the ancient world. Posidonius journeyed deep into the heart of the Celtic lands in Gaul. There he discovered that the Celts were not barbarians but a sophisticated people who studied the stars, composed beautiful poetry, and venerated a priestly caste known as the Druids. Celtic warriors painted their bodies, wore pants, and decapitated their foes. Posidonius was amazed at the Celtic women, who enjoyed greater freedoms than the women of Rome, and was astonished to discover that women could even become Druids. He returned home and wrote a book about his travels among the Celts, which became one of the most popular books of ancient times. His work influenced Julius Caesar, who would eventually conquer the people of Gaul and bring the Celts into the Roman Empire, ending forever their ancient way of life. Thanks to Posidonius, who could not have known that he was recording a way of life soon to disappear, we have an objective, eyewitness account of the lives and customs of the ancient Celts." Light browning to top of text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some areas of light edge wrinkling - mainly on rear panel, minor rubbing, two very small dents on front hinge.

THE HELLENISTIC AGE: A HISTORY., Green, Peter.
6 Green, Peter. THE HELLENISTIC AGE: A HISTORY.
New York Modern Library 2007 9780679642 / 9789780679644 1st Printing Hard Cover Very Good + Very Good+
199 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w maps, genealogies. "The Hellenistic era witnessed the overlap of antiquity's two great Western civilizations, the Greek and the Roman. This was the epoch of Alexander's vast expansion of the Greco-Macedonian world, the rise and fall of his successors' major dynasties in Egypt and Asia, and, ultimately, the establishment of Rome as the first Mediterranean superpower. (This book) chronicles the years 336 to 30 BCE, from the days of Philip and Alexander of Macedon to the death of Cleopatra and the final triumph of Caesar's heir, the young Augustus. Peter Green's far-ranging study covers the prevelent themes and events of those centuries: the Hellenization of an immense swath of the known world - from Egypt to India - by Alexander's conquests; the lengthy and chaotic partition of this empire by rival Macedonian marshals after Alexander's death; the decline of the polis (city-state) as the predominant political institution; and, finally, Rome's moment of transition from republican to imperial rule. - To consider the three centuries prior to the dawn of the common era in a single short volume demands a scholar with a great command of both subject and narrative line. (This) is that rare book that manages to coalesce a broad spectrum of events, persons, and themes into one brief, indispensable, and amazingly accessible survey." One introduction pages leaf with soft edge crease. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing.

MISSION TO CHINA: MATTEO RICCI AND THE JESUIT ENCOUNTER WITH THE EAST., Laven, Mary.
8 Laven, Mary. MISSION TO CHINA: MATTEO RICCI AND THE JESUIT ENCOUNTER WITH THE EAST.
London Faber and Faber 2011 0571225179 / 9780571225170 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
279 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w maps, colour plates. "In the sixteenth century, the vast and sophisticated empire of China lay almost entirely unknown to Western travellers. As global trade expanded, this land of reputedly boundless wealth, pale-faced women, and indecipherable tongues begn to feed the fantasies of European merchants and adventurers. The Catholic Church, meanwhile, saw in this great people millions of souls who would be damned unless the Christian message could be brought to them. Mary Laven tells the extraordinary story of the first Jesuit mission to China. Confronting enormous challenges, the Italian priest Matteo Ricci and a handful of learned companions embarked on a journey into the heart of the Empire, the fabled Forbidden City. As they became intimate with a culture that was utterly alien and strangely familiar, they clung to a belief that reason, books and science would be their chief tools in the battle to win Chinese converts. Yet the story told (here) is much more than a war of ideas. The Jesuits waged their campaigns through the senses: the smell of incense, the taste of warm rice-wine, the sound of an out-of-tune harpsichord, the gleam of a Venetian prism. The history of religion has never been so sensuous." Very light wrinkling at top of spine, small bump at top corner of boards, light toning to top of text block, light waviness to for-edge of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, three tiny dents on front hinge.
