THE ALTERATION., Amis, Kingsley.
1 Amis, Kingsley. THE ALTERATION.
London Jonathan Cape 1976 022401305X / 9780224013055 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Tom Adams, dust jacket art.
208 pp, 8" H. "It is 1976, but things are not the same. Due to a slight alteration in history involving Catherine of Aragon, Martin Luther, Thomas More and others, a Holy Victory was won in an event called the War of the English Succession, and today England, like most of the world, is virtually ruled by a Machiavellian Pope who hails from Yorkshire. Piety is rampant, science is a forbidden word and New England is a wild abode of exile for Schismatics and common criminals. Hubert Anvil is simply the best boy singer in living memory, and the Abbot is soon to propose that he undergo a simple operation to preserve his heavenly voice at the cost of his earthly pleasure. Hubert's pious father agrees to the 'alteration', reassuring the boy that his voice is a special gift from God and that, as he will never experience manhood, he won't miss it. Hubert's more wayward mother is forced to admit that the love of men and women, though less exalted than the love of God, is a very powerful force indeed, and the family confessor, who is also her lover and an overbold foe of authority, has to agree. With his suspicions aroused that the glory of God may not be much compensation for what he will be missing - Hubert plans his escape - into a world where to be a runaway is a dangerous crime and a deadly sin." Front pastedown is trimmed to edge of front board instead of being inset from edge, slight fading to color on top of text blcok near spine, tiny bump at bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very minor edge wear/wrinkling.

2 Erickson, Carolly. ROYAL PANOPLY: BRIEF LIVES OF THE ENGLISH MONARCHS.
New York St. Martin's Press, New York, 2006. 2006 0312316437 / 9780312316433 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
351 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Colour and b&w plates. "(This book) replaces the stereotypic images with true multifaceted portraits, bringing each of England's rulers to fully fleshed life. Here is the puny Charles I, nervous, tense, and socially awkward; the frail, slight Richard II, melancholic and sad; the homosexual James I with his handsome favorites; the stuttering William II and the stammering George VI. Here also is the choleric, violent William I (William the Conqueror), bred among the chaos of constant warfare in his native Normandy, ceaselessly embattled once he became King of England. The unkingly Henry III, mild and charitable, despised by his barons for his weakness. And the well-meaning, deeply affectionate Queen Anne, whose many children all died before they could reach adulthood and who was so heavy and gout-ridden that she had to be carried to her coronation. Each ruler's life has a unique story, and 'Royal Panoply' tells that story with award-winning historian Carolly Erickson's characteristic blend of scholarly authenticity, engaging prose, and psychological insight. The focus is not merely on the tale of each reign, but on each king's or queen's entire life, for some rulers did not come to the throne until middle age, and had already led full lives before their accession. Here they are in full panoply: feudal warriors, Renaissance icons, Regency dandies, and modern constitutional monarchs, fascinating characters all." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

THE MILITARY ORDERS FROM THE TWELFTH TO THE EARLY FOURTEENTH CENTURIES., Forey, Alan.
3 Forey, Alan. THE MILITARY ORDERS FROM THE TWELFTH TO THE EARLY FOURTEENTH CENTURIES.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1992.
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. Maps. ISBN 0802076807 "The reasons for the emergence and establishment of military orders on the various borders of Western Christendom and within the West are discussed, as are the military functions and roles which they assumed. The orders made a major contribution to the defence and expansion of Western Chistendom, and this required considerable funds and reserves of manpower. This book describes the ways in which these were obtained, and giv e s a n a c count of extensive governmental machinery developed to enable the orders to carry out their tasks effectively. Although their members combined a military with a monastic way of life, the military orders are shown to have differed from o th e r re l ig i o us foundations not only in their daily routine but also in their adminstrative structure and in their predominantly lay membership." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - tiny soft crease at to p c or ne r o f cov ers - migrates into adjacent pages, very light rubbing, mnior wear at bottom of spine. Very Good+

5 Lunenfeld, Marvin. THE COUNCIL OF THE SANTA HERMANDAD: A STUDY OF THE PACIFICATION FORCES OF FERDINAND AND ISABELLA.
Coral Gables Univesity of Miami Press 1970 0870241435 / 9780870241437 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
134 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. "The role of the Council was to govern the Holy Brotherhood, the kingdom-wide police force (of Renaissance Spain). The Council guided the colorful Brotherhood in pacifying Castile, and, while so doing, created a royal army for the conquest of Granada, the prototype of the great Spanish infantry that dominated Europe for centuries. The fact that Queen Isabella borrowed the money for Columbus' voyage from the treasury of the Brotherhood is an incidental, but not insignificant contribution to the Brotherhood in history. (The author) brings into question long-established theories concerning the social groups affected by the police and the extent to which the urban patriciate willingly cooperated with the crown in meeting Council demands. He documents reasons for believing that the Holy Brotherhood remained relatively more independent of royal control than had been previously assumed. He also provides a vivid description of the court, cities, and lawless countryside of fifteenth-century Castile." Previous owner's name on free front endpaper. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wrinkling along top edge, two tiny closed tears with creases, light rubbing.

144 pp, oblong large 8vo (9 7/8" H x 11 1/4" D). B&w and colour maps. "The maps in this book are reprinted from the collection held at the Public Records office in Kew, London. These superbly crafted charts, which have been accumulated from sources all over Europe over many years, are remarkable documents that until now have been accessible only to researchers. Dating from the earliest days of professional mapmaking they chart over three centuries of European history through cartography. From the earliest representations of the mapmakers art in the 16th century, when the skills required to produce detailed scale maps first developed, to the elegant charts of the 19th century, they show the rise and fall of empires and the development of powerful nations. With an introduction that chronicles European history and detailed captions that explain the historical context of each of the maps, this is a fascinating work that is as insightful as it is attractive."
