STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS., Crowlesmith, J., Rev.
3 Crowlesmith, J., Rev. STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS.
London Aldine Hard Cover Good Fair H.S. Greig.
172 pp, 7 1/2" H. Red boards with black lettering/illustration on spine and front board. Colour frontispiece, b&w illustrations. No date, but Xmas greetings on free front endpaper dated 1936. "The stories that follow are taken from Sir Thomas Malory's 'Morte D'Arthur', the great collection of romances about King Arthur which was written in the fifteenth century, and printed first of all by Caxton. Scholars say that Arthur was a British hero, one of the leaders of the Britons against the English invaders in the sixth century. In course of time legends centred round his name in the memory of the defeated race. To the original stories the Middle Ages added others, some of which belonged to later heroes, and, finally, these were combined with various legends of the Christian Church about the finding of the Holy Grail, the cup from which Christ is said to have drunk at the Last Supper with His disciples. Thus we get the beautiful cycle of romances which shines in the pages of Malory's great book. This version has been written for younger children. As far as possible the old-world style of Malory's narrative has been preserved, while the stories chosen are those which seem to present a message to youth." 11 Matthews, John, compiler/editor. TALES OF THE CELTIC OTHERWORLD.
London Blandford 1998 0713726563 / 9780713726565 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Ian Daniels.
176 pp, 9 7/8" H. Colour illustrations. "Nearly every culture contains some idea of an afterlife: an 'Otherworld', from which the spirit comes, lives the mortal life, and then returns after death. The traditional Celtic idea of the Otherworld is as rich, detailed and powerful as any in the world, and is described in detail in the many ancient surviving texts where it is a central theme. This collection of stories consists of classics such as 'The Voyage of Bran', and many newly researched folk-tales and myths. Alongside the strikingly original illustrations by Ian Daniels, these tales are visionary and stimulating. As well as teaching about the beliefs and practices of the ancient Celtic peoples they can provide us with an insight into our own lives today, enriching and deepening our understanding of the human situation in time and space." Light edge wear - mainly on bottom edge. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

12 Matthews, John, editor/compiler. Foreword by Philip Carr-Gomm. (P.W. Joyce, J.A. MacCulloch, Julius Pokorny, T. Rice Holmes, Lewis Spence, John Toland, Edward Davies, Godfrey Higgins, Algernon Herbert, W.A. Winwood Read, Iolo Morgannwg, et al. THE DRUID SOURCEBOOK: FROM EARLIEST TIMES TO THE PRESENT DAY. (SOURCEBOOK.)
London Brockhampton 1998 1860198422 / 9781860198427 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
384 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "The Druids have long been misrepresented and misunderstood. The only true records that survive from when the Druids originally flourished are those of the classical writers, who were completely opposed to Druids and their practices. Julius Caesar wrote disparagingly about them and sought to destroy them. The historical reality is that Druidism and early Christianity lived side by side for a long period, and a considerable amount of Druid philosophy was absorbed into Christianity itself. Whether Druidism is regarded as a Celtic priesthood in origin and name, or a religion, it is clear that Druids and Druidism were important aspects of the life of the early European peoples, especially in Britain. In this comprehensive and brilliantly researched book, John Matthews presents a cross-section through the diverse layers of Druid history and custom. Using rare sources - often lost or forgotten texts and translations - he shows how various aspects of Druidism originated and how these contributed to practices we see today. A Druid himself, (he) has expert knowledge and avoids the popular misinterpretation of Druidism as 'wanting to live in the past'. Instead, this book reveals the truth about Druidism, its ideas and customs, and makes a vital contribution to current interest in the Druids." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, very small bump at bottom corner of both boards, very minor eubbing on boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
