Macmillan, London, 1977, first edition.
232 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333198670 B&w illustrations. "Years of detailed research into Celtic and Arthurian history have brought Geoffrey Ashe face to face with wider mysteries and conundrums that go to the heart of human civilisation. This book is a quest for an original and universal knowledge - the Ancient Wisdom - nutured by priests, shamans and occultists, claimed by scientists and historians since earliest times. Dissatisfied with theories of l ost Atlantis or alien astronauts bequeathing our cultural heritage, Geoffrey Ashe is still convinced that the Ancient Wisdom is not just a legend. But what is it? Is it still at work? In the tradition of Robert Graves and his search for t h e W h i t e Goddess, he investigates the puzzles of ancient mythology and religions. From the magical lore of numbers he unearths the clue that leads from the world of the Middle East and the Mediterranean to the mountain fastnesses of Siberi a - an d d ev as ta ti ng confirmation of the Ancient Wisdom's existence." Minor browning to pages, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny scuffs on bottom of textblock, light browning and faint tiny foxing marks on top of textblo ck . Du st ja cke t h as bee n price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds, two small tears archivally taped, minor rubbing, light to moderate browning on inside. 160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very minor rubbing, very minor edge wrinkling, tiny scuff on rear flap-fold.

177 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(R)econstructs America's first era of manned flight and brings back to life the famous and less-known aviators who became the nation's heroes: Charles Lindberg, whose achievement was the great event of the 1920s - Amelia Earhart, one of the many women 'aces' (the aviation industry encouraged women because, as pilot Louise Thaden put it, 'If a woman can handle a plane, the public thinks it must be 'duck soup' for men.') - Calbraith P. Rogers, who made the first transcontinental flight, surviving a dozen crashes, a broken arm and collarbone, and a score of wounds caused by the metal fragments of an exploded engine - and many others. The book provides a vivid picture of America in the first half of the century - its aspirations and concerns - as expressed in the exuberant and often utopian response to a major new technology." CHARIOT: THE ASTOUNDING RISE AND FALL OF THE WORLD'S FIRST WAR MACHINE., Cotterell, Arthur.

London Pimlico 2004 0712669426 / 9780712669429 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
344 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "The chariot changed the face of ancient warfare. First in West Asia and Egypt, then in India and China, charioteers came to dominate the battlefield. In 1274 B.C. at Kadesh in present-day Syria - where the untried pharoah Ramesses II was nearly defeated by the Hittites - some 5,000 chariots were deployed in battle. Its use as a war machine is grapically recounted in Indian epics and Chinese chronicles. Homer's Illiad tells of the attack on Troy by Greek heroes who rode in chariots. In 325 B.C. Alexander the Great faced charioteers in northern India, while in 55 B.C., on a Kent beach, Julius Caesar was met by British chariots. This unique book traces the rise and fall of the chariot right across the Old World, from Britain to Korea." Includes a chapter titled 'Survivals, Ritual and Racing'. Book is Fine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing on spine.

THE PHILOSOPHER AND THE DRUIDS: A JOURNEY AMONG THE ANCIENT CELTS., Freeman, Philip.

New York Simon & Schuster 2006 978074326280 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
221 pp, 8 11/16" H. B&w maps, photographs. "Early in the first century B.C. a Greek philosopher named Posidonius began an ambitious and dangerous journey into the little-known land of the Celts. A man of great intellectual curiosity and considerable daring, (he) traveled from his home on the island of Rhodes to Rome, the capital of the expanding empire that had begun to dominate the Mediterranean. From there he planned to investigate for himself the mysterious Celts, reputed to be cannibals and savages. His journey would be one of the great adventures of the ancient world. Posidonius journeyed deep into the heart of the Celtic lands in Gaul. There he discovered that the Celts were not barbarians but a sophisticated people who studied the stars, composed beautiful poetry, and venerated a priestly caste known as the Druids. Celtic warriors painted their bodies, wore pants, and decapitated their foes. Posidonius was amazed at the Celtic women, who enjoyed greater freedoms than the women of Rome, and was astonished to discover that women could even become Druids. He returned home and wrote a book about his travels among the Celts, which became one of the most popular books of ancient times. His work influenced Julius Caesar, who would eventually conquer the people of Gaul and bring the Celts into the Roman Empire, ending forever their ancient way of life. Thanks to Posidonius, who could not have known that he was recording a way of life soon to disappear, we have an objective, eyewitness account of the lives and customs of the ancient Celts." Light browning to top of text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some areas of light edge wrinkling - mainly on rear panel, minor rubbing, two very small dents on front hinge.

"The landing site selected for the crew of Apollo 16 was in the lunar highland area of Descartes. NASA chose to send J ohn Young to command the fifth lunar landing mission. Young had as much or more flight experience than any other member of the astronaut corps. He had circumnavigated the moon on Apollo 10 and he had flown two Gemini missions. Young would late r g o on to be the first commander of the Space Shuttle. The Descartes landing site was chosen because it appeared to be of volcanic origin. If it was, it might reveal secrets about the origins of the Earth. For three days, Young and Duke embark ed on their rover, away from the Lunar Module 'Orion', through rugged landscapes, in search of the origins of our world. Meanwhile Ken Mattingly shot hundreds of photographs and probed the moon's magnetic field from the Command Module 'Casper'. Bac k on earth the political climate was beginning to turn against NASA and the remarkable risks and exploits undertaken by the crew of Apollo 16 went almost unnoticed by the American people. The three intrepid explorers and their spacecraft harv este d a we alth of new data about the Earth-Moon system in an almost flawless performance of skill and bravado. Compiled here are many important documents about the mission including the complete debriefing in the crew's own words." Interior - cl ean a nd tigh t with no previous ownership marks. London Faber and Faber 1995 0571175260 / 9780571175260 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
165 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H). "An aged prophetess at Delphi, the most sacred oracle in ancient Greece, looks back over her strange life as the Pythia, the First Lady and voice of the god Apollo. As a young virgin with disturbing psychic powers, Arieka was handed over to the service of the shrine by her parents. She has now spent sixty years as the very medium, the torn mouthpiece, of equivocal mantic utterances from the bronze tripod in the sanctuary beneath the temple. Over a lifetime at the mercy of god and priest and people she has watched the decay of Delphi's fortunes and its influence in the world. Her reflections on the mysteries of the oracle, which her own weird gifts have embodied, are matched by her feminine insight into the human frailties of the High Priest himself, a true Athenian, whose intriguing against the Romans brings about humiliation and disaster. This extraordinary short novel, left in draft at the author's sudden death in 1993, is a psychological and historical triumph. An absolutely convincing portrait of a woman's experience, something rare in Golding's oeuvre, Arieka the Pythia is one of his finest creations." Small bump to top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear, wrinkling at top of flap-folds - very light edge wear elsewhere, minor rubbing.
