HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROYAL NAVY: AN INTRODUCTION., Coad, J.G. (Jonathan)
3 Coad, J.G. (Jonathan) HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROYAL NAVY: AN INTRODUCTION.
London Victor Gollancz, London, 1983. 1983 0575032774 / 9780575032774 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
160 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, reproductions, plans, elevations, maps. "From the 1690s to the First World War, British maritime power, though often challenged, ruled supreme. It was a key factor in the nation's commercial growth which fuelled and underpinned industrial and imperial expansion. Central to the creation and maintenance of that supremacy were the royal dockyards, and the naval hospitals. Without these there could have been no Royal Navy, and Britain's modern history would have been very different. (This book) concentrates on the period from 1700 to 1900, with particular emphasis on the dockyards built to service the sailing navy. They are rich in naval and architectural history and were industrial centres in England well before the Industrial Revolution. They go far towards explaining how it was that Britain was able to maintain and sustain one of the greatest navies the world has seen. With numerous illustrations featuring surviving buildings in Chatham, Sheerness, Portsmouth, Devonport, Harwich, Gibraltar, Minorca, Malta, Bermuda and Antigua, (it) is a fascinating and important book." Tiny corner bumps, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

5 Smith, C. Fox. THE SHIP AGROUND: A TALE OF ADVENTURE & PAINTED PORTS. OXFORD CHILDREN'S LIBRARY NO.s 3 & 35. (TWO VOLUMES)
London Oxford University Press Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- C. Walter Hodges.
221 pp, 212 pp, 7 7/8" - 2 volumes. The Ship Aground is the first Oxford Children's Library printing of 1958 - Painted Ports is the 1965 printing. B&w illustrations. The Ship Aground "derives its title from the name of a tavern that stood on the bank of London River a hundred and fifty years ago or thereabouts. That is where the hero spent his childhood, and that was his point of departure on a voyage in the best 'Treasure Island' vein that carried him to the other side of the world and back. The story is exciting without putting any undue strain on the reader's credulity, and the atmosphere and local colour of the period are well preserved." In Painted Ports, "Barty Dale is anxiously waiting to go to sea, in spite of the hardships endured in the past. When he does at last succeed in becoming an apprentice aboard the 'Sir Thomas Hobson', he is full of excitement at the thought of what lies ahead. Though misfortune follows him wherever he goes, Barty remains undaunted. After escaping from a French privateer, he finds some strange friends, and experiences an even stranger ending to his voyage." The ship Aground has light browning in page margins, one tiny corner bump, archivally taped edge tears to last two pages, light browning to edges of text block. Painted Ports has corner creases on front free endpaper, very light browning to edges of text block. The dust jacket of Painted Ports is price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, is in the original publisher's removable plastic sleeve with old price sticker on flap. He then goes on to the history of the islands from the time of their discovery by Columbus at the end of the 15th century; the 16th-century Spanish rule which saw the extermination of the aborigines in the Greater Antilles, the introduction of sugar cane, and the notorious slave trade with the Guinea Coast; the 17th-century challenge of France and England when the Leeward and Windward Islands were disputed - the age of buccaneers; the prosperity and battles of the 18th century, and the movement of id eas with the French Revolution, which led to the liberation of the slaves and the decline of the islands as the planters returned to Europe. He tells the story of a 17th-century Frenchman who joined the famous pirates of Tortuga, and the h i s t o r y o f the long bloodbath that prceeded the declaration of independence of Haiti, the Black Republic. The second part of the book comprises four character sketches, including three stories of black magic, and two sections deal with the i nd iv id ua l ch a rm a nd interest of each of the islands: Montserrat, Barbados, Anguilla, Trinidad, St. Vincent, Tortola, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Saba, Antigua, Dominica and Puerto Rico."
