PRAGUE WINTER: A PERSONAL STORY OF REMEMBRANCE AND WAR, 1937-1948., Albright, Madeleine. With Bill Woodward.
1 Albright, Madeleine. With Bill Woodward. PRAGUE WINTER: A PERSONAL STORY OF REMEMBRANCE AND WAR, 1937-1948.
New York Harper 2012 0062030310 / 9780062030313 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
467 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)akes readers from the Bohemian capital's thousand-year-old castle to the bomb shelters of London, from the desolate prison ghetto of Terezin to the highest councils of European and American government. Albright reflects on her discovery of her family's Jewish heritage many decades after the war, on her Czech homeland's tangled history, and on the stark moral choices faced by her parents and their generation. Often relying on eyewitness descrip-tions, she tells the story of how millions of ordinary citizens were ripped from familiar surroundings and forced into new roles as exiled leaders and collaborators, victims and killers. These events of enormous complexity are nevertheless shaped by concepts familair to any growing child: fear, trust, adaptation, the search for identity, the pressure to conform, the quest for independence, and the difference between right and wrong. At once a deeply personal memoir and an incisive work of history, 'Prague Winter' serves as a guide to the future through the lessons of the past - as seen through the eyes of one of the international community's most respected and fascinating figures." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds.

2 Baigent, Michael and Leigh, Richard. SECRET GERMANY: CLAUS VON STAUFFENBERG AND THE MYSTICAL CRUSADE AGAINST HITLER.
London Penguin 1995 0140247165 / 9780140247169 Soft Cover Very Good+
337 pp, mass market paperback. B&w photographs, map, family tree. "In July 1944 a group of conspirators known as Secret Germany attempted to kill Hitler. The mastermind of the conspiracy was Count Claus von Stauffenberg. Who was this charismatic, dashing aristocrat, who was said to be the only man to stare the Fuhrer down? What were the secret teachings that inspired him to the audacious act of assassination? Forty-six serious but failed attempts on Hitler's life in twenty years reflect a strong anti-Nazi movement in Germany. For Stauffenberg, the bomb plot organized by his esoteric circle was more a moral and spiritual necessity than an act of political expediency. Had he succeeded, he might have become the saviour of the national soul. In this remarkable investigation (the authors) explain how Stauffenberg represents a resolution of the conflicting myths of German culture. In his courage and integrity he stands as an atonement for the barbarism of the Third Reich." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear.

3 Baigent, Michael and Leigh, Richard. SECRET GERMANY: CLAUS VON STAUFFENBERG AND THE MYSTICAL CRUSADE AGAINST HITLER.
London Jonathan Cape 1994 0224035258 / 9780224035255 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
337 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps. "At thirty-seven, Colonel Count Claus von Stauffenberg, Chief of Staff of the Reich Reserve Army, was a charismatic figure destined for supreme command. The group of conspirators with whom he conceived the plot to kill Hitler in July 1944 was called 'Secret Germany'. That was also the name of the esoteric circle in which Stauffenberg as a young man had been a disciple of the mystic anti-Nazi magus and poet Stefan George. What was it that motivated this extraordinary aristocratic soldier, with the looks of a Hollywood idol, who was said to be only man to stare the Fuhrer down until he averted his eyes? For Stauffenberg the bomb plot was not a political move but a moral and spiritual necessity. After forty-two serious attempts on Hitler's life in the previous twenty years, why did he too fail? Had he succeeded, some say he would have become the de Gaulle of Germany, saviour of the national soul. Even in failure, there can be no doubt of Stauffenberg's heroism. He stands as an atonement for the Third Reich and a resolution of the conflicting myths of German culture. In this remarkable investigation his whole life explains a troubled past to the present generation of Europeans as few have done in recent history." Tiny crease at bottom corner of pages 83 to 100. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, tiny dint on rear hinge, very light rubbing .

4 Buruma, Ian. Signed. MURDER IN AMSTERDAM. THE DEATH OF THEO VAN GOGH AND THE LIMITS OF TOLERANCE.
Penguin, New York, 2006, first edition (remainder mark).
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON HALF TITLE PAGE. ISBN 1594201080 "It was the emblematic crime of our moment: On a cold November day in Amsterdam, an angry young Muslim man, Mohammed Bouyeri, the son of Moroc can immigrants, shot and killed the celebrated and controversial Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, great-grandnephew of Vincent and iconic European provocateur, for making a movie with the Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali that 'insulted the prophet Mo h ammed'. After Bouyeri shot Van Gogh, he calmly stood over the body and cut his throat with a curved machete, as if performing a ritual sacrifice, which in a very real sense he was. The murder horrified quiet, complacent, prosperous Holland, a co un try that prides itself on being a bastion of tolerance, and sent shock waves across Europe and around the world. Shortly thereafter, Ian Buruma returned to the country of his childhood to investigate the event and its larger meaning. The result is his masterpiece: a book with the intimacy and narrative brilliance for which Buruma is renowned. (His) entire life's work has led him to this story - the tale of what happens when political Islam collides with the secular West, and tolerance f inds its limits." Penguin, New York, 2004, first American edition.
488 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1594200300 B&w map, plates. "Charles Stewart Henry Vane-Tempest-Stewart, the 7th Marquess of Londonderry, was born to power and command. Scion of one of Britain's most aristocratic fa milies, cousin of Churchill and confidant of the king, owner of vast coal fields and landed estates, married to the doyenne of London's social scene, Londonderry was an ornament to his class, the 0.1 percent of the population who still owned 3 0 p e r c ent of England's wealth as late as 1930. But history has not been kind to 'Charley', as the king called him, because, in his own words, he 'backed the wrong horse', and a very dark horse indeed: Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party. Londonde rr y w as h ar dly the only British aristocrat to do so, but he was the only cabinet member to do so, and it ruined him. In a final irony, his grand London house was bombed by the German Luftwaffe in the blitz. Ian Keshaw is not out to rehabilit ate L ord Lo ndo nde rry but to understand him and to expose why he was made a scapegoat for views that were much more widely held than anyone now likes to think." HARMFUL AND UNDESIRABLE: BOOK CENSORSHIP IN NAZI GERMANY., Lewy, Guenter.
7 Lewy, Guenter. HARMFUL AND UNDESIRABLE: BOOK CENSORSHIP IN NAZI GERMANY.
New York Oxford University Press 2016 0190275286 / 9780190275280 Second Printing Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
268 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "Like every totalitarian regime, Nazi Germany tried to control intellectual freedom by censoring books. Between 1933 and 1945, the Hitler regime orchestrated a massive campaign to take control of all forms of communication. In 1933, there were 90 book burnings in 70 German cities. Indeed, Werner Schlegel, an official in the Ministry of Propaganda, called the book burnings 'a symbol of the revolution'. In later years, the regime used less violent means of domination. It pillaged bookstores and libraries and prosecuted uncooperative publishers and dissident authors. (The author) analyzes the various strategies that the Nazis employed to enact censorship and the government officials who led the attack on a free intellectual life, including Martin Bormann, Philipp Bouhler, Joseph Goebbels, and Alfred Rosenberg. The Propaganda Ministry played a leading role in the censorship campaign, supported by an array of organizations at both the state and local levels. Because of the many overlapping jurisdictions and organizations, censorship was disorderly and erratic. Beyond the implementation of censorship, Lewy describes the plight of authors, publishers, and bookstores who clashed with the Nazi regime. Some authors were imprisoned. Others, such as Gottfried Benn, Werner Bergengruen, Gerhart Hauptmann, Ernst Junger, Jochen Klepper, and Ernst Wiechert, became controversial 'inner emigrants' who chose to remain in Germany. Some of them criticized the Nazi regime through allegories and parables. Ultimately, Lewy paints a fascinating portrait of intellectual life under the Nazi dictatorship, detailing the dismal fate of those who were caught in the wheels of censorship." Book is Near Fine. Harcourt Brace, New York, 1997, first American edition.
319 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 01510024444 "In June 1938, after his attempts at diplomacy with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy had failed, Pope Pius XI ordered an American Jesuit, Father John LaFarge, to compose an en cyclical denouncing racism and anti-Semitism. The result was a draft called 'Humani Generis Unitas' (The Unity of the Human Race), which LaFarge produced with the help of two other priests. But after Pope Pius XI died early in 1939, his succ e s s o r , Pius XII, stood by in silence as Nazi Germany began to carry out its Final Solution. The unpublished encyclical was buried in a secret archive, its three authors bound by a vow of silence. For decades Vatican scholars either minimized t he i mp or ta nce of 'Humani Generis Unitas' or questioned the document's very existence - until Thomas Breslin, a Jesuit seminarian, uncovered the manuscript in the late sixties. In a disturbing tale of archival intrigue and historical investi gat ion , ( the au tho rs) describe their quest to recover the draft of the encyclical. Undaunted by interminable delays - evasions that only deepened suspicions of Church complicity thirty years after Vatican II - (they) steadfastly pursued their inq uiri es. Her e, p ubli shed for the first time in English, is the document the Vatican kept hidden for half a century. By examining the circumstances of its creation and the consequences of its suppression, (this book) casts new light on the relat ions betw een t he Va tican , state-sponsored anti-Semitism, and the Jews during World War II." Born in 1924, he made his Toronto Symphony conducting debut at the age of eighteen. He went on to become the artistic director of the Winnipeg Symphony, a conductor with the Toronto Symphony, and a guest conductor of virtually every major symphony orchestra in Canada. Feldbrill was also the first conductor-in-residence at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, from 1968 to 1982. However, what really set Feldbrill apart was his limitless enthusiasm and support of Canadian music and young musicians, as well as his insistence on playing the music of Canadian composers despite the reluctance of some orchestral managers and the initial opposition of audiences at the time. In doing so he reached out to young people and trained many to take their places as members of Canadian orchestras from coast to coast." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

"Beginning with the first Jewish settler, Moses David, the important role that Windsor Jews played in the development of Ontario's south is mirrored in this 200-year chronicle. The founding pioneer families transformed their Eastern European shtetl into a North American settlement; many individuals were involved in establishing synagogues, schools, and an organized communal structure in spite of divergent religious, political, and economic interests. Modernity and the growing influence of Zionism and Conservative/Reform Judaism challenged the traditional and leftist leanings of the community's founders. From the outset, Jews were represented in city council, actively involved in communal organizations, and appointed to judical posts. While its Jewish population was small, Windsor boasted Canada's first Jewish Cabinet members, provincially and federally, in David Croll and Herb Gray. As the new millenium approached, Jews faced shrinking numbers, forcing major consolidations in order to ensure their survival." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. 276 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "In 1886 Alexander Ulyanov, a brilliant biology student, joined a small group of students at St. Petersburg University to plot the assassination of Russia's tsar. Calling themselves the 'Terrorist Faction of the People's Will', they planned to kill Alexander III on March 1, 1887, the sixth anniversary of his father's assassination by the People's Will. Thus known to history as the 'Second First March', the young terrorists failed disastrously in their mission, and five of them, Alexander Ulyanov included, were hanged. Alexander would have been just another casualty in the long history of Russian revolutionary martyrs were it not for one detail: his younger brother, Vladimir, led the October Revolution of 1917 under his assumed name, 'Lenin'. Exploring the rich array of published documents and the recently opened archives of post-Soviet Russia, (the author) illuminates the mystery at the heart of this story. How did a respectable family preparing its children for professional careers produce both a terrorist and the author of the October Revolution?" Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 15 Rutherford, Ward. HITLER'S PROPAGANDA MACHINE
New York Grosset & Dunlap 1978 0448146274 / 9780448146270 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
192 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions. "Paul Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's Minister of Propaganda and Public Entertainment, refined the use of what he called the Big Lie to a fine art. Democracy was portrayed as evil, dictatorship as good. Books which did not conform with Nazi ideology were burned; radio broadcasts were made with the intention of cowing the German populace and frightening the peoples of the world. Mass rallies were staged in Berlin, Nuremberg and elsewhere to whip up enthusiasm for the military expansion of Germany and hysteria for the Third Reich and the Fuhrer. Magazines and newspapers played their role in a more subtle way, emphasizing Nazi triumphs and minimizing or obliterating criticism of the regime and its failures. Colorful posters were put up throughout Germany. Later the Nazis enlisted the support of other Europeans in the pan-German cause. All of these propaganda techniques were master-minded by Goebbels, whose genius in orchestrating propaganda in the mass media was acknowledged even by his enemies. In films, magazines, posters, rallies and speeches by Hitler and his followers, Goebbels developed a propaganda mechanism that has been copied by dozens of dictators since but never equalled in its cynicism and fury." Map endpapers, profusely illustrated in b&w and color with photographs and reproductions. "Russia has always been considered a sleeping giant by those frightened by the spectre of an awakened giant. But people forget that Russia was once very small at a time when Poland and Lithuania were very large, and that she was retarded by the invasion of the Golden Horde from Asia, to which she paid a humiliating tribute for several centuries. In other words, Russia's struggle for identity, and indeed for survival, was a protracted and heroic one against crushing odds, and her national character must be judged on such a basis, and not merely as a state which has subsequently occupied over one-sixth of the world's surface. She has been invaded far more often than she has invaded, and lost far more sons and daughters on her own soil than she has lost sons on foreign fields. This is then no apology, no devil's advocacy, but a detective story to the roots of a national character which often frightens and often mystifies, but the roots of which lie in the humanity and inhumanity which are common to all mankind."
