THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY, Burland, C. A.
4 Burland, C. A. THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY
London Arthur Barker 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
196 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "From the earliest time man has been fascinated by visions and dreams, and by the discovery that there were men who could, by magical powers, improve a crop or foretell the weather. As civilization grew there were demands for knowledge which would give control over other men or protection from the wiles of enemies. The study of magic and counter magic became important in the policy of states. Later magic was denounced as a work of the Devil, and then the Devil himself was demoted to become a laughing stock. Yet even nowadays there exist in the most advanced nations societies devoted to magical practices, who deal in strange rituals, and promote the interests of their membership against all enemies. A careful study shows that there is a good deal of scientific knowledge involved in the vast and complex network of 'magical' practice today. This book sets out to show some of the main lines of influence which have led to the present traditions. It treats the subject as if if were a tapestry of many strands each of which has a line of origin from which it traverses like a weft thread on the warp of universal psychological experience. This book is a short history of a complex development. It is planned as a groundwork from which the interested reader can advance to further detailed studies." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small slight bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, a few small closed tears, jacket has been laminated for protection and to prevent further deterioration over the center portion (panels, spine and flap-folds).

5 Caidin, Martin S. NATURAL OR SUPERNATURAL? A CASEBOOK OF TRUE, UNEXPLAINED MYSTERIES.
Chicago Contemporary Books 1993 0809238047 / 9780809238040 First Edition Soft Cover Good+
221 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w illustrations. "Throughout history and continuing to this day, occurrences have been reported that are so extraordinary there seem to be no possible natural explanations. Yet the credibility of the witnesses - often including thousands who have simultaneously observed the same mysterious event - and the consistency of these events across centuries of time and disparate parts of the earth indicate that they cannot be easily dismissed. (P)opular writer and aeronautics expert Martin Caidin reviews some of the most fascinating of these observations. Among the phenomena he discusses are: Careful tests by scientists showing that some people really can control objects at at distance; Reports from Vietnam combat marines of huge, glowing yellow 'semi-humans' impervious to machine-gun fire; Testimony from several different teams of Soviet cosmonauts citing encounters with 'giant angels'; Documented reports of people using divining rods to find rich deposits of ore, oil, and underground water sources that had gone undetected by scientific instruments; UFO sightings noted throughout recorded history - and their incredibly consistent similarity over three thousand years and many lands." Interior - very small bump at top and bottom corners of first few pages, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - light edge wear, very small crease at bottom corners of covers, two creases at top corner of front cover and large soft crease at bottom corner, blank small label on rear cover.

TALES OF THE ELDERS OF IRELAND. (ACALLAM NA SENORACH.), Dooley, Ann and Roe, Harry, translated with introduction and notes by.
7 Dooley, Ann and Roe, Harry, translated with introduction and notes by. TALES OF THE ELDERS OF IRELAND. (ACALLAM NA SENORACH.)
Oxford Oxford University Press 1999 0192839187 / 9780192839183 Soft Cover Very Good
245 pp, 7 3/4" H. "This is the first complete translation of the largest literary text surviving from twelfth-century Ireland, and the most comprehensive early collection of Fenian stories and poetry. Three parallel worlds interact in the 'Tales': the contemporary Christian world of Saint Patrick, with his scribes, clerics, occasional angels, and souls rescued from Hell; the earlier pagan world of the ancient, giant Fenians and an array of Irish kings; and the timeless Otherworld, peopled by ever-young, shape-shifting fairies. The 'Tales' dwell in detail on the inhabitants of the Irish Otherworld and provide an extensive account of their music and magic, their internicine wars and their malice toward, and infatuation with, humankind - themes that still feature in the storytelling of present-day Ireland. This excellent new translation is based on existing manuscript sources and is richly annotated, looking at the 'Acallam's' place in Irish tradition and its wider literary impact." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, very light browning to edges of text block, old price label on rear cover.

176 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Judaism, has flourished for millennia in a myriad of environments; each has contributed something to the Jewish tradition. Far from being a religion ossified in the world of the Bible; it has produced countless legends and stories, built up on Bible inspiration but reflecting the ideas of the cultures within which they emerged. (This book) explores the core of the Jewish faith by retelling the stories made up and told by Jews throughout the world. The author develops essential ideas of Judaism, including the creation of the universe, the history of man, the history of Israel and the future of Israel. He retells the familiar Biblical stories surrounding the great Biblical personalities such as Abraham, Moses and Elijah. He then goes on to show how their ideas and their characters were developed in the legends and folklore surrounding the Torah, and elaborated throughout the rabbinical tradition. With its great variety of stories told in clear and simple style, written for Jew and Gentile alike, (it) provides a fascinating insight into the wealth and vitality of Judaism." In the Empire of Ferryth, Caris watched a wizard murdered by a figure that vanished into a tunnel of darkness. And abominations were crossing through the weakening fabric of the Void. 193 pp, 7 1/8" H. Red covers with black lettering on front board. "Man undoubtedly posseses, in however rudimentary a form, certain supersensory powers. The unfoldment of such powers can be hastened by using 'Raja Yoga' as the chief means. If they are not present, the aspirant can diligently supply the necessary conditions for their unfoldment. The broadcast talks of the author included in this volume offer guidance in the management of human life and the development of character needed for such an unfoldment. However, we should remember, that the development of psychic powers is not man's supreme evolutionary attaiment. Boston Sigo Press 1986 093843408X / 9780938434085 Second Edition Soft Cover Very Good
452 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "The Holy Grail and its quest is a legend which has had a powerful impact on our civilization and culture. The Grail itself is an ancient Celtic symbol of plenty as well as a Christian symbol of redemption and eternal life, the chalice which caught the blood of the crucified Christ. The story of the Grail sheds profound light on man's search for the supreme value of life, for that which makes life most meaningful. Writing in a clear and readable style, two leading women of the Jungian school of psychology present this legend as a living myth that is meaningful to modern life. We encounter such universal figures as the Fool (the naive young Perceval), the Wise Old Man (the Hermit Gornemanz), the Virgin Maiden (Blancheflor), the Loathly Damsel, and such important themes as the Waste Land, the Trinity, and the vessel of the Grail. Weaving together narrative and interpretation, the authors show us how the legend reflects not only fundamental human problems but also the dramatic psychic events which form the background of our Christian culture." Exterior - minor soiling on bottom of text block, tiny dent at top of spine, very faint creases on spine, one tiny corner crease.

By the time the FBI sting operation had reached its conclusion, 42 Hells Angels - including Sonny Barger himself - were jailed on various drug, weapons and murder charges. With the threat of Hells Angels expansion ever-present, and biker wars erupting in cities where the influence of the Hells Angels was once invisible, 'Into the Abyss' is both a chilling true-crime story and a timely warning about the danger in our own backyard." Minor edge rubbing, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine.
