THE RUNES OF ELFLAND., Berk, Ari. Foreword by Brian Froud.
4 Berk, Ari. Foreword by Brian Froud. THE RUNES OF ELFLAND.
New York Harry N. Abrams 2003 0810946122 / 9780810946125 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Brian Froud. Rune artifacts by Jason Hancox.
112 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in colour. "The ancient and mystical runes of Celtic and European origin provide a rich source of inspiration for faery authority and fantasy artist Brian Froud's evocative paintings, which interpret these potent symbols through the prism of Elfland - the world of faeries and myth. In the hands of the exceptional folklorist and poet Ari Berki, the secret meanings of these runes are teased out and the power they offer us is made manifest. In the pages of this book a single symbol provides the visual key to a host of mythic stories, lands and adventures. Each of the twenty-four paintings is accompanied by its own poetic Charm, an invocation that unlocks the gate to the deeper meanings of the rune. Each rune has its Telling, a story of a place or of an individual that brings the imagery to life. Finally, each rune has its Gift, the interpretation of images, elements, and ideas that connects these imaginative journeys to our everyday life and experience. Sprinkled throughout are runic messages, with the alphabetic key to the runes at the end of the book, ready to assist in translation. By using the runes and Froud's paintings as tools to explore both the 'seen' world and the 'unseen' world, (this book) will inspire readers to re-imagine their own lives and tell their own tales. Both storybook and oracle, (it) provides a wellspring of personal insight for the Froud fan and the Faery aficionado." Book is Fine. Dust jacket has some very minor edge wrinkles.

176 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Judaism, has flourished for millennia in a myriad of environments; each has contributed something to the Jewish tradition. Far from being a religion ossified in the world of the Bible; it has produced countless legends and stories, built up on Bible inspiration but reflecting the ideas of the cultures within which they emerged. (This book) explores the core of the Jewish faith by retelling the stories made up and told by Jews throughout the world. The author develops essential ideas of Judaism, including the creation of the universe, the history of man, the history of Israel and the future of Israel. He retells the familiar Biblical stories surrounding the great Biblical personalities such as Abraham, Moses and Elijah. He then goes on to show how their ideas and their characters were developed in the legends and folklore surrounding the Torah, and elaborated throughout the rabbinical tradition. With its great variety of stories told in clear and simple style, written for Jew and Gentile alike, (it) provides a fascinating insight into the wealth and vitality of Judaism." A MYSTICAL KEY TO THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE., Hoffstein, Robert M.
12 Hoffstein, Robert M. A MYSTICAL KEY TO THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.
Destiny, Rochester, Vermont, (1992).
187 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. "The English alphabet was originally intended as a means of instruction in the sacred 'word' of God. Robert Hoffstein explains that words are not arbitrarily chosen but constructed on ageless principles, an awareness of which allows us to communicate with more understanding and potency. Through his analysis of the vowels and consonants, the author demonstrates the meanings hidden in the basic sounds of English words. Pointing out that many English words are related to words and sounds from diverse places and peoples, Hoffstein argues that languages may be connected cross-culturally on the level of the collective unconscious. He shows how even the most ordinary words have within them keys that can be deciphered for a better understanding of our language and our lives. With an unusual blend of humor and insight, Hoffstein analyzes the true nature of the language we use, so that its deeper significance as an earthly agent of divine purpose is not lost." Exterior - minor rubbing, very small shallow dent on front cover, very small surface paper loss at top/bottom of rear hinge, very small closed tear at top of rear hinge, tiny bump at bottom of spine, minor wear at top of spine. LETTERS OF MARSHALL MCLUHAN., Molinaro, Matie; McLuhan, Corinne; Toye, William - Editors. (Marshall McLuhan)
19 Molinaro, Matie; McLuhan, Corinne; Toye, William - Editors. (Marshall McLuhan) LETTERS OF MARSHALL MCLUHAN.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1987 0195405943 / 9780195405941 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
562 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "Marshall McLuahn (1911-1980) became one of the most famous men of the sixties and seventies and the involuntary founder of an unofficial cult. His reputation as a communications theorist was established by two of many books. 'The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man' (1962) explains how society and human psychology were changed when pre-literate oral culture was supplanted with the invention of the phonetic alphabet and a manuscript culture gave way to the Gutenberg era of movable type, the printing press, and mass-produced books. 'Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man' (1964), McLuhan's most widely read book, explores the electronic age and its effects on individuals and society. The letters in this collection - which in the early years provide a fascinating background to McLuhan's life and intellectual growth - are filled with discussions of ideas that altered people's understanding of many aspects of the electronic age they lived in. They reveal not only the amiability of a man who earned the friendship and respect of many outstanding people of his day, but also his staggering knowledge of the literature of the great writers and thinkers of the past and present, which inspired him to achieve his penetrating insights into his age and to become its most renowned interpreter. Collectively they furnish a readable and comprehensible gloss on the ideas that made McLuhan's name. His correspondents - distinguished scholars and colleagues, celebrated politicians, famous journalists, and stars of popular culture - range from Woody Allen to Tom Wolfe. The letters are organized in three sections, each with a period introduction: 1931-1936 takes McLuhan through the University of Manitoba and Cambridge University. 1936-1946 covers one year's teaching at the University of Wisconsin; two years at Saint Louis University; one year, with his bride, at Cambridge for work on his Ph.D.; four more years at Saint Louis; and two at Assumption College, Windsor, Ontario. This period includes many letters to Wyndham Lewis. The last section begins in 1946, when McLuhan joined the staff of St Michael's College, University of Toronto. (Two years later he began a long correspondence with Ezra Pound.) Covering the period of McLuhan's fame, it ends in September 1979 with a letter to Pierre Elliott Trudeau, written shortly before McLuhan suffered a stroke that rendered him speechless. This rich and varied collection of over 450 letters, by a man whose thought exerted a singular influence throughout the western world, is an important contribution to the cultural history of the twentieth century." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing.
