NICHOLAS HILLIARD., Auerbach, Erna.
6 Auerbach, Erna. NICHOLAS HILLIARD.
Boston Boston Book & Art Shop 1964 Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Nicholas Hilliard.
352 pp, small 4to (10" H). Over 200 reproductions of Hilliard's work, mainly in b&w. "This is the first full-length monograph to be written on the life and work of Nicholas Hilliard who lived from 1547 to 1619. The first English-born painter to gain the status of an artist recognised by the English court, he was painter, limner, engraver and goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I and later to James I, and is kown to have also painted portraits in oil, but it is difficult to attribute particular oil portraits to his hand. Hilliard's importance is not limited by his performance as a miniaturist, for the style of his miniatures had a major influence on the general trend of English painting, and dominated the manner of contemporary English portraiture, both life-size and miniature. (He) was equally eminent as a goldsmith and he practised this craft throughout his life. Much new biographical material has been found which establishes Hilliard as a great Elizabethan." Small bump to top corners of boards, minor browning to page edges. Dust jacket is moderately browned - mainly on inside surface, is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly to top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

"(T)he story of a young Anglo-Irish beauty's visit to Delhi for the 1911 Royal Durbar, where a new King, George V, is to be proclaimed Emperor to reinforce the loyalty to the Crown of India's ruling Princes. For a fortnight of relentless ceremony, unheard of extravagance and imposing military spectacle, in the setting of a vast Tented City complete with its own farms, railway, telegraph and post offices, Lilah Wingfield meets many of the most remarkable colonial characters of the day, including some of the foremost Indian Princes, vying to stage the most lavish display to prove their devotion to the Raj. As the tents are dismantled, Lilah travels through India - to the dangerous Khyber Pass on the Afghan border, to Rajasthan, to the gory sites of the Mutiny and to stay with India's only female ruler, the Begum of Bhopal. Her diary shows her deepening awareness of the ambivalence of certain maharajahs towards British Rule even while she is being entertained royally in their lakeside palaces. Her Irish upbringing gives her an instictive feeling for the mixture of their longing for independence and an affection for the mother country." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. She was everywhere, attending costume balls, visiting an aging Sir John A. Macdonald, interviewing the fiery suffragette Susan B. Anthony, covering sensational murder trials. 20 Fisher, Margery. WHO'S WHO IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS: A TREASURY OF THE FAMILIAR CHARACTERS OF CHILDHOOD.
New York Holt, Rinehart and Winston 1975 0030150914 / 9780030150913 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Various.
399 pp, 10" H. Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout with b&w drawings and colour plates. "Who does not have vivid memories of characters from the books of childhood? Alice in Wonderland, Brer Rabbit, Dr Dolittle, Paddington Bear, the Railway Children, Winnie the Pooh, Tom Sawyer - the list is endless. Many names are so familiar - favourites from generation to generation - that they need no repeating; others are half forgotten; some may be almost unknown. This book is for everyone who wishes to recapture those memories and to find fresh inspiration for reading. It is a personal collection of characters from the world of children's fiction, by an author widely known and respected for her extensive knowledge on the subject. Entries include not only human characters but humanized or personalized animals, toys and vehicles, fairy and folk tale characters. The distinctive qualities of each are evoked in the writing - their appearance, mannerisms, speech, details of background, their role within the story - so that the reader recaptures or is introduced to the essential personality of the character concerned. From Margery Fisher's pertinent critical comments one is given an indication of the quality and status of the book in question. Approximately 400 illustrations accompany the text, showing not only the well-known representations of the characters, but title pages, authors' photographs, and scenes from film treatments. This is an invaluable treasury in which to look up characters from children's books, trace where they appeared, find their authors and first publication dates. It will inspire enthusiasm to read books not previously known and can be read by anyone for pure enjoyment." Minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's name and date on half-title page. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, tiny dent on spine.
