BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881., Beeler, John.
2 Beeler, John. BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881.
Caxton, London, 2003, reprint.
224 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840675349 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, plans. "The 1870s and 1880s have traditionally been seen as the 'Dark Ages' of British warship design, where techn ological conservatism and a lack of any definite design policy produced a confusing mix of ship types, with armament and machinery which were outmoded before the ships were even completed. This new book, however, is a powerful refutation of t h a t v i ew, expanding the scope of its study of the ships of this period beyond the narrowly technological to reveal the full range of strategic, logistical and administrative factors which influenced warship development, arguing that it is her e th at t h e or igins of the modern battleship can be found. The author gives an insight into the difficulties faced by warship designers in an age of rapid technological change, and sets out the valid strategic and technical reasons that lay beh in d s uch se em in gly 'reactionary' policies as the fitting of sails in cruising ironclads, and the Navy's retention of muzzle-loading guns well into the 1880s. Far from having no plan, it is shown that the warship designers of this period had a v ery clea r id ea of the types of ship required to meet the range of roles the Royal Navy was called upon to fulfill in defence of a global empire, and that the problems that the ships of this period had owed more to political, financial and admi nist rati ve pr essur es tha n an y lack of competance on the part of their designers." Dust jacket has some areas of minor edge wrinkling, one tiny tear archivally taped. Fine/Near Fine

There were happy ships and unhappy ships, lucky ships and unlucky ships, and he instances experiences from them. Throughout the book he links the experiences of the seamen to the great actions of the war taking place around them, which are thus seen not from the viewpoint of the captain or admiral but the men who fired the guns, the engineers, etc. Thus we get new perspectives on the Battle of the River Plate, Convoy PQ17, the invasion of Sicily, the Battle of Sirte, and many other actions." BLACK AJAX., Fraser, George MacDonald.
5 Fraser, George MacDonald. BLACK AJAX.
New York Carroll & Graf 1998 0786705531 / 9780786705535 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Author
249 pp, 9 1/4 " H. Bookplate, signed by author, affixed to half title page. "When Captain Buckley 'Mad Buck' Flashman, father of the notorious Harry, sees a black American boxer catch a fly in mid-flight, he realizes he has discovered the prize ring's best, and potentially most lucrative fighter ever. What follows in George MacDonald Fraser's colorful re-creation of Regency England is the powerful, rollicking, and moving tale of Tom Molineaux, a freed slave from New Orleans who challenged Britain's celebrated Tom Cribb. The 'Black Ajax' became no less famous a figure in England than Napoleon - and just as much a threat to the establishment - as he boxed his way into legend and created the precedent for modern black prizefighters. Bringing historical fact spiritedly to life, 'Black Ajax' shows Fraser is without question, in the words of Kingsley Amis, 'a first-rate historical novelist'." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing, irregular 3" very light scratch on rear panel.

7 Ladd, James D. Foreword by Lieutenant-Colonel P.G. Davis. SBS: THE INVISIBLE RAIDERS. THE HISTORY OF THE SPECIAL BOAT SQUADRON FROM WORLD WAR TWO TO THE PRESENT.
London Arms and Armour 1983 0458968900 / 9780458968909 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
283 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Together with the SAS, LRDG and other such specialist units, the Special Boats Squadron traces its origins back to the Mediterranean theatre of operations during the Second World War. Originally part of Laycock's 8 Commando, the SBS rapidly developed its own skills, expertise and identity, despite technically serving as part of the SAS for much of the war. After the war, these 'pirates' became a unit within the Royal Marines and served throughout the world during the 'post-imperial peace'. Their activities have, until now, rarely been revealed. While the SAS has become world-famous for anti-terrorist exploits in the full glare of publicity, the SBS role was little known until it came to prominence in the Falklands conflict. There, SBS teams operated in parallel with their SAS counterparts, probing the Argentine-held islands and feeding back essential intelligence information. In an island war, they were very much in their element, and they played a key part in reconnoitring the eventual landing site for the Task Force at San Carlos." Three small light liquid marks on rear board. Dust jacket has some very light wrinkling at top edge, very light rubbing.

9 Pack, S.W.C. THE BATTLE OF MATAPAN. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
183 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "In March 1941 Britain faced the Axis powers alone. Her army was still in disarray after Dunkerque, her fleet was stretched to the uttermost. It was in this context that, 100 miles off Cape Matapan in Greece, there was fought an action in which the Italian fleet was so signally defeated that it never voluntarily offered battle again so long as the war lasted. The engagement, the first major fleet action since Jutland a quarter of a century earlier, was of historical significance for two reasons; it was the first time carrier-borne aircraft had played a vital role, and the first time that the use of radar was of preponderant importance in a large-scale fleet action. Here is an account of Matapan which, illustrated by unfamiliar action photographs, will satisfy the expert no less than it will engross the general reader." The author, Captain Pack, was present throughout the Battle in the carrier 'Formidable'. Light to moderate edge wear to boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, two previous owner's names/info./date on front pastedown, very light browning to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket is price clipped, has browning on spine and edges, light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

11 Robertson, Terence. WALKER, R.N. THE STORY OF CAPTAIN FREDERIC JOHN WALKER, C.B., D.S.O. AND THREE BARS, R.N. CADET EDITION.
Evans Brothers, London, 1960 reprint, Cadet edition.
192 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "According to an Admiralty statement the Battle of the Atlantic, which raged for five and a half years, was 'the most protracted and bitterly fought campaign in which the British Empi re and her Allies have ever been engaged'. That this battle was triumphantly won was the direct result of the offensive tactics of the Navy's 'little ships', inspired by the brilliant exploits of one man who, the Admiralty stated, 'did more t o f r e e the Atlantic of the U-Boat menace than any other single officer'. Here is this man's story - the life and death of Captain Frederic John Walker, R.N., Companion of the Order of the Bath, and holder of the D.S.O. and three Bars. Worki ng w i th t he c omplete co-operation of Captain Walker's family and with full access to private papers and diaries, the author traces the career of this indomitable sailor from his early years as a midshipman in H.M.S. Ajax to his last voyage in th e s lo op Sta rli ng. This is a magnificent and inspiring record of devotion to duty and unfaltering courage. (The author) tells in vivid, authentic detail the unrelenting struggle waged by Captain Walker and the men under his command to beat the men ace of the Ger man U-Boat." Dust jacket is price clipped, has moderate edge wear/wrinkling and creasing, several small tears and tiny chips - some with old tape rep airs, two fain t water stains, 3 tiny punctures, 1" piece missing at top of rear panel, light rubbing, slight browning - now in a mylar sleeve. 12 Weeks, Verna Mae. MY VILLAGES OF MISSISSAUGA.
Chesley, Ontario Verna Mae Weeks 1986 0969130112 / 9780969130116 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good
287 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs. "(A)n account of people, places and events as I recall them during the unforgettable years between World War I and World War II, when I lived in the southern part of Peel County which later became the City of Mississauga. Anything further removed from the little villages of Peel County, fifty or sixty years ago, and the new City of Mississauga would be difficult to imagine. The years of the 1920s were happy years for us; but the Great Depression years of the 1930s were ones that most people who lived through them would rather forget. It seems to me that the story should be told and accepted as part of our real history and, as such, written in the first person by someone who lived through those days. New pictures, not published before, have been freely given by people who lived in the region, making this a more valuable book. Many of the places and buildings which are 'of historical interest' today were everyday places and houses to us, with everyday people living and working in them. For example: the Wilcox Inn, at Port Credit, was to us just Wilcox's, a house past which we went to go swimming in the Credit River, and Clarke Memorial Hall was where we went to watch cowboys in the old silent moveis. I have painted a word picture of life as it was lived then; beyond that, I have put flesh and bones back into the old buildings, moved real people back into their homes, schools and businesses, and shown you familiar nooks and byways they knew." Interior - spine slightly cracked at pages 142/143 - pages holding firmly, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - light crease on spine; slight fading to color on spine, front cover and part of rear cover; very small faint stain on fore-edge and on bottom of text block, small light corner creases.
