He was test pilot on many of the first and second generation jet fighters and bombers, both Briti s h a n d American, as well as the first British supersonic aircraft. The core of the book is made up of the author's flight test reports on such aircraft as the Gloster Meteor, the North American B45, the English Electric Canberra, the English El ec tr i c Li gh tning and Britain's first supersonic bomber, the TSR2, a project which was cancelled before the aircraft went into production. In conclusion, the author looks to a future in which he sees supersonic flight playing an ever-increasing ro le, e sp eci all y in the field of military aviation." Long out of prin t, this aviation classic has been expanded with new photographs and updated by supplementary material on First World War planes and pilots....(Bishop, who received every British decoration of valor, including the Victoria Cross) was also a sk i l l f u l writer and 'Winged Warfare' vividly recreates those early days - both comic and tragic - when the deadly 'airborne jalopy' was getting its trial run. He describes the dank, slimy and boggy mud that soured him on land combat. And the w ri ti ng c ra ck l es when (he) relives flying his Nieuport Scout, armed with a single Lewis gun. It was in this tiny plane that he dodged the 'Archies' (German anti-aircraft batteries and outfought and outmaneuvered the scarlet-winged Fokkers flo wn by Bar on von Ri ch thofen's formidable squadron. Here, too, are the joys and terrors of daily dogfights, a life of extraordinary contrasts. A narrative of needle-nosed ships flying at blistering speeds, it is also the moving testament of a man risking his life to push back the frontiers of scientific knowledge. Like St.-Exupery, Bridgeman is capable of describing the vastness and beauty of the skies. But as America's foremost experimental test pilot, he is constantly aware of the multitude of technical information which he is called upon to use at any given moment. After the war, Bill Bridgeman left the Navy a restless man. Seeking action, he joined Douglas Aircraft as an engineering test pilot. Soon he was asked to take over the final stages of the Skyrocket testing program. The Skyrocket, a javelin-shaped experimental ship, was a challenge to Bridgeman. The jungle heat and the broad sea, the North Vietnamese Air Force and their arch ace Colonel Tomb, the MiG-17s and MiG-21s. Points on the Ameri can side were our elite pilots, aircraft and weapons: the Thunderchiefs, Crusaders and, of course, Phantoms. The air battles of the Vietnam War were fierce; the victors earned their wings and the kill markings emblazoned on their planes. (Th i s b o o k) spotlights the duels between America's pilots and the MiGs in the skies over Southeast Asia. Most of all, this is a book about airplanes. Here are the Phantoms Colonel Robin Olds piloted to score four kills. The intrepid Skyhawk whi ch d o wn ed a MiG-17 with an unguided air-to-ground missile. And F-4 number 155880 which finally blew Hanoi's Colonel Tomb out of the sky, earning its pilot ace status. Here are the men and machines that flew Rolling Thunder and Linebacker I a nd II. Mil ita ry expert Robert F. Dorr has collected a superb gallery of glowing color photos - many of the contemporary - and written a detailed history, chock full of anecdotes." THE ARROW., Dow, James.
12 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1997 1550285548 / 9781550285543 Soft Cover Fine
166 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "Here is the fascinating story of the rise and fall of the Arrow, the legendary interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe Canada in the fifties. The Arrow was an unprecedented success story for Canada's fledgling aviation industry. It was conceived by its builders as the culmination of an impressive string of world firsts. Faster than any previous aircraft, it represented the leading edge of technology and an achievement of the highest calibre. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time and which remains hard to fathom even today. The Diefenbaker government cancelled the Arrow, and everything was destroyed, including the planes themselves. Nothing was to remain. Working from official documents, archives, interviews and a wide range of unofficial sources, James Dow presents the authoritative story of A.V. Roe Canada and its projects. He describes how the Arrow was developed and why it was killed. Dow takes us behind the scenes to the real dynamics and rivalries which were a part of the Arrow from the beginning and which explain its fate. This edition of the definitive books on the subject has been updated with a new introduction."

THE ARROW., Dow, James.
13 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1979 0888622811 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
160 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow (supersonic fighter) appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success, and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time, and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled, and everything to do with it, including the planes that had already flown, was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow, James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry, created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner, conceived in 1945 for Air Canada (then TCA). It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet, and was first in the air in August 1949 only days behind Britain's Comet. Avro's military experience came with the CF-100 Canuck fighter, which flew first in 1951. There was even an experimental flying saucer, built for the U.S. armed forces. The Arrow was to be the culmination of this experience and this success." Previous owner's place, date and signature in ink on front free endpaper; some light toning to endpapers and to edges of text block, very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, several small tears with creases at top edge, light edge wear, one small edge chip, protectedin a mylar sleeve.

20 Harris, John Norman. Illustrated by William Wheeler. KNIGHTS OF THE AIR: CANADIAN ACES OF WORLD WAR I. GREAT STORIES OF CANADA SERIES NO. 18.
Macmillan, Toronto, 1960, reprint.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, B&w and black, white & green illustrations. "High above the mud and slaughter of the trenches, the little wood-and-fabric airplanes looped, rolled, banked, in mortal duel. So me of the soldiers who stared at them in the skies of France and Flanders in 1915 were Canadians. They had not dreamt that they would ever leave the ground. Yet within three years Canadians had proved themselves masters of this new form of f i g h t i n g and a dozen Canadians ranked among the top aces of the world. This book is about those Canadian masters of the aerial dogfight. Barker of Manitoba is here - incredibly daring hero of the French and Italian fronts who, with both legs a nd o ne a rm s hattered by enemy bullets, shot down four attackers and drove off the rest before he crashed behind his own lines: crowning exploit of a flying career in which he had destroyed 50 enemy aircraft. Collishaw of Vancouver is here, wi th his sc ore of 60 . Only half-a-dozen aces of all nations surpassed him - and only Bishop among the Canadians with his tally of 72. For Billy Bishop was most famous of all. In his first six weeks of flying he scored 17 victories and won the DSO and the MC. Fo ur w eeks later he added the VC. Many other aces are here - McKeever, MacLaren, Claxton, McCall, Quigley, Carter, Burden, Milne, Bell-Irving. Flying without parachutes in machines which burnt like torches when they caug ht f ire, thes e air men t ook f right ful risks. Below them, men lived in muddy trenches under shell-fire; they depended on the work of the airmen above and the airmen did not let them down. This is their story." Written for the younger reader.
