9 SO MANY: A FOLIO DEDICATED TO ALL WHO SERVED WITH RAF BOMBER COMMAND, 1939-45.
Macmillan, [Toronto], (1995).
276 pp, folio, HC. "The central theme is the courage of thousands of men - most of them from ordinary backgrounds in Britain and the Empire, but including important groups from countries overrun by Germany - who survived one of the most severe and prolonged periods of physical danger and mental strain any group of people has ever been asked to bear. Over 55,500 of them were killed. The principal content allocates ten pages to each of 25 aircrew, who, often straight from school, served as pi lots, navigators, bomb-aimers, signallers, flight engineers and air gunners in Bomber Command in World War 2. Each has a biography, a photograph of his memorabilia, a handwritten reminiscence and a painted silhouette showing him as he i s i n 1 9 9 4 . Thus he will make his mark in history, and you, the reader, will be able to judge what manner of man he was. You will also be able to decide how much you owe to men like him for the fact that today Europe is entirely free, and no t e ns la v ed u nd er a single master-race." Ribbon marker. Very minor edgewear. NF/NF

The letters are w r i t t e n b y a countryman to a younger friend abroad and they describe the routine of country life throughout the months of the year as it engages an active man with a contemplative mind. They recount the discovery of the small signs of spri ng , th e de li gh t s of summer and long days spent in the open air, and the white beauty of the winter which the townsman hardly knows. Here then is a tranquil book designed for casual reading, calling up the very sights, sounds and smells of th e E ng lis h cou ntr ysi de .
