The Krozairs were the highest order of chivalry on that turbulent planet, dedicated men, warriors of stern conviction and unflinching hearts. Thus when the Krozairs in their hour of need called on all their far-flung members for aid, he should have come. But he did not. His return had been blocked by the anger of the mysterious Star Lords. Ian Allan, London, 1988, first edition.
144 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 071101714X Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, floor plans, elevations. "It is almost impossible to describe a typical LNER country station - the nearest it is possible to come is to say that somewhere like Otterington was one, although it was certainly not typical. The problem of finding a common strain of styles arises from the diversity of the LNER's consituents, and its adoption of a policy of decentralised manageme n t. In addition to this, the relative poverty of the company mitigated against renewal and rebuilding. (This book) is structured along the lines of these constituent companies and, with the aid of over 170 photographs and 20 line drawings, (the a ut hor) relates the histories and unifying features of the many varied stations and branches in the LNER's area of operations." Blackie & Son, London, n.d.
288 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 4 b&w plates. "When H.M. destroyer 'Screel' off Algiers is diverted to go to the aid of an aircraft in trouble, none of the crew has the least inkling that this incident is the starting-poin t of a long-drawn-out chase and a bewildering chain of strange adventures. In particular, Peter Watson, the 'Screel's' young sub-lieutenant, tumbles into more than one tight corner both at sea and ashore on the trail of the mysterious fre i g h t e r i n which two eminent scientists, captured by an unknown Power, are held prisoners. The chase, directed by Mr. Venners, unconventional secret-service agent, leads from Algiers to Cairo and Port Said and on into the Indian Ocean, where a t er ri bl e c yc lo n e complicates the plans of pursuer and pursued alike. The enemy is ruthless and determined, the most formidable among them being a grossly fat Armenian, the spider at the centre of countless webs of intrigue throughout th e E ast . But wh er e doe s D ri scoll, Peter's American rescuer, fit into the picture? It needs some time before this and other baffling questions are answered and Mr. Venners finally accomplishes his mission. 255 pages, 7" H. "It should have been a simple job. But for Garrett, a human detective in a world of gnomes, tracking down the woman to whom his dead pal Denny left a fortune in silver was no slight task. Denny's family wanted to hang onto the treasure - especially sister Rose, with a body hot enough to stop Garrett in his tracks, but a heart colder than the metal he was packing. And suddenly vampires, centaurs, and other nasty creatures are in the way, and Garrett would much rather be at home with a bottle of beer than in the wilds with fangs in his neck. Even with the aid of Morley, the toughest half-elf around, Garrett isn't sure he'd make it out alive from a land where magic could be murder, the dead still talked, and vampires were always hungry for human blood!" THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
11 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
Coward-McCann, New York, 1963, first American edition.
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, c ourtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brillian t c o m e d i e s of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new an d c om pl ic at ed d ev ices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of for ge ry an d e mbe zzl eme nt. H e became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mist res s, Mada me d u Ba rry. Th e ne xt K ing, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late K ing whi ch we re of expl osive impo rtanc e, in volved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais al lied him self w ith th e caus e of t he Ame rican coloni es; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, Beaumarchais organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, h is pl ay 'T he Barb er of S eville' had be en accl aimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the b an was reluc tantly l ifted, a ll Paris fought to see i t. Wh en the R evolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a fr iend's house. Later he was arre sted, rel eased th rough inf luence of a woma n, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." A few small faint fo xing ma rks on free endpa pers, ligh t wrinklin g at top/ bottom of spine, very small dint at top edge of front board, tiny foxint marks at edges of illustration pages. WALTER CRANE AS A BOOK ILLUSTRATOR., Engen, Rodney K.
13 Engen, Rodney K. WALTER CRANE AS A BOOK ILLUSTRATOR.
New York St. Martin's Press 1975 85670170X First American Edition Soft Cover Very Good Walter Crane.
105 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour reproductions. "Walter Crane, artist of Kensington, was a man of many talents, but possibly best known for his original and charmingly executed designs which made him the leading illustrator of children's books of the Aesthetic Movement period. In the face of the commercial vulgarity and ugliness of Victorian industrialised society, he created a delicate and escapist fairy world which, with its emphasis on spontaneity and mobility of line, and its clever use of background and colour, popularised a completely new style of tasteful book designs, and brought them within the reach of everyone. The influence of Crane's work and his highly novel theories of design make him an important figure in nineteenth century art history. (The author) discusses Crane's style and ideas in a study delightfully arranged after Crane's own rules and book design. He includes nearly 100 illustrations, ranging from nursery rhymes and fairytales to tailpieces and borders, mostly full page as Crane designed them, and 16 in the full colour he helped to pioneer. The extensive annotated catalogue is an invaluable aid for both student and specialist." Previous owner's bookplate on half title page. It was also an age in which Mennonite history was marked by fragmentation even in their own communities. During this twenty-year timespan the battle for separate schooling led to a significant emigration of Canadian Mennonites to Latin America, while another struggle was waged with our immigration authorities to allow the entry of Russian Mennonites into Canada. The book also covers the impact of the Depression on the Mennonites and their efforts to preserve their culture and racial identity.
