BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
3 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

98 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w drawings, maps. "Born and educated in Toronto, Robert Buckham was employed as a graphic artist in several studios in Toronto and as an art director in a Montreal advertising agency prior to enlisting in the RCAF. Twice rejected for aircrew because of his height (he is 6/4"), he was finally accepted for pilot training in May of 1941. He was posted overseas in early 1942 and eventually joined 428 Squadron, 6 Group, based in Dalton, Yorkshire, where he flew Wellington X bombers over Germany and German-occupied France. His aircraft was downed on April 8, 1943, on his tenth operational flight. He and his entire crew were captured. Imprisoned in Stalag Luft 3, Sagan, Germany, (he) recorded the scene in small drawings and paintings, which were eventually rolled and carried on two forced marches in a tube created from soldered Klimcans. 5 Burton, G. Allan. A STORE OF MEMORIES.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1986 0771017928 / 9780771017926 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
330 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "With warmth, wry wit, and surprising candour, G. Allan Burton relates the big and small incidents in his life, sometimes with nostalgia, sometimes with bite. His story starts in Toronto's exclusive Rosedale district, where, as a child, he discovered the twin passions of horse-riding and watercolour painting, passions that became the dual themes of his life. The first took him into the Governor General's Horse Guards, into the Allied Forces' dangerous campaign in Italy during World War II, and into a life-long love of fox hunting. The second took him into architecture and interior design and then into Simpsons where he worked his way from stockboy to chairman of the company. Throughout his business career, he kept a journal in which he recorded the critical events of Simpsons growth - the formation of Simpsons-Sears, the opening of new stores, and the innovative development of shopping malls in Ontario and Quebec, the frustrations of economic recession, and finally the explosion of the 'store wars' in 1979 where the Hudson's Bay Company and Sears, Roebuck of Chicago battled for control of this major Canadian company." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has one tiny tear with crease - archivally taped, a few areas of light edge wrinkling, minor edge wear, very light rubbing.

Dundurn, Toronto, 2010, 4th edition, 1st printing.
284 pp, large 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 9781554886982 B&w photographs. "The development of the Avro Arrow supersonic fighter was a remarkable Canadian achievement. Its mysterious cancellation in February 1959 prompted questions that have long gone unanswered. What role did the Central Intelligence Agency play in the scrapping of the project? Who in Canada's government was involved in that decision? What, if anything, did Canada get in return? Who ordered the blowtorching of all t h e p r o totypes? And did Arrow technology find its way into the American Stealth fighter/bomber program? When (this book) was first published in 1992, its answers to these questions sent shock waves across the country. Using never-before-releas ed d o cu me nt s, (it) exploded the myth that design flaws, cost overruns, or obsolescence had triggered the demise of the Arrow. Now, in this fully revised fourth edition, complete with two new appendices, the bestselling book bring readers up-t o-d ate o n t he CF- 105 Arrow, the most innovative, sophisticated aircraft the world had seen by the end of the 1950s." A DEATH IN NOVEMBER: AMERICA IN VIETNAM, 1963., Hammer, Ellen J.
10 Hammer, Ellen J. A DEATH IN NOVEMBER: AMERICA IN VIETNAM, 1963.
New York E.P. Dutton 1987 0525242104 / 9780525242109 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
373 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, map. "The time, January-November 1963. The place: Saigon. The circumstances: a fledgling nation being subverted from inside and out, and a set of treacherous Vietnamese generals and arrogant, blundering high officials of the Kennedy administration. The result: the assassination of South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem and his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu in a military coup that turned the Vietnam War in to an American war and set in motion an ever-widening tragedy. This riveting inside chronicle of a single year is not only an awesome task of research but a cautionary tale for all Americans. Dr. Hammer, who visited the embattled nation many time s during the period and interviewed key characters in the drama, cuts away layer after layer of double-talk to expose the cancer of incomprehension and mistrust that killed all hopes of preserving the independence of South Vietnam. Without ever calling names or placing blame the author is everywhere, probing, digging, uncovering - letting history render its own verdict. When November 1963 was over, both the Vietnamese and American presidents had died at the hands of assassins. No one but ( the author) could have summoned up the ghost of Ngo Dinh Diem with such power or demonstrated so poignantly its significance for our larger involvement in Vietnam." Minor edge wear, minor rubbing, date in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.

11 Littleton, James. TARGET NATION: CANADA AND THE WESTERN INTELLIGENCE NETWORK.
Toronto Lester & Orpen Dennys 1986 0886191181 / 9780886191184 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
228 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A)s military connections between Canada and the U.S. grow ever closer, urgent questions have arisen: do the CIA and other American intelligence organizations manipulate our Canadian intelligence services? How much national autonomy do our intelligence agencies really have? These disturbing questions were brought to (the author's) attention in conversations with authorities at the highest levels of government. Over the last six years he has conducted his investigation through interviews with key players in the RCMP, the new Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), and other branches of both the Canadian and the U.S. governments. Many of them spoke to him with surprising frankness. Here, Littleton exposes the unwritten, secret agreements that exist among the Canadian intelligence services, the CIA and other Western intelligence agencies - without the full knowledge of our top government officials. He reveals how the intelligence services were part of the American attempt to implicate Lester Pearson as a Soviet spy, the dramatic increase in the power of the Canadian intelligence services since the end of the Second World War, and the efforts of the Diefenbaker, Pearson and Trudeau governments to come to grips with U.S. demands to use Canada as a strategic military zone between the two superpowers. As the cold war escalates, so does the pressure on Canad to accommodate Star Wars, Cruise missile testings, and other schemes that require the use of Canadian territory. (This) is a fascinating, disturbing account of how, in the family of the Western intelligence network, the closely linked interests of the secret services are sometimes placed before the welfare of Canada." A few tiny bumps to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, three tiny scuffs.

228 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "At the end of World War Two, Britain, although impoverished, was a power that spanned the globe, while America was a nation withdrawing to look after its own affairs. All this was to change within a short space of time. A freakishly cold winter proved devastating for Europe and revealed Britain's fundamental weakness, while the Soviet Union, once an ally, began to emerge as a threatening expansionist power. The United States stepped in, first with economic help and then with defence aid, transforming itself into a world power. This is something for which neither the British nor the American people were prepared, and their leaders also had to struggle to come to terms with the rapid changes in the world. (This book) shows how this dramatic transfer of power came to pass: the British withdrawal from the Eastern Mediterranean which shocked the US Administration, the 'Truman Doctrine' that came in response, the Marshall Plan that changed Europe forever, pushed through after a struggle with Congress, and the series of momentous decisions that followed." Nine doctors, six of them Jews, were cited, and in the next few weeks many more were carted off to the dread prisons of Lubyanka and Lefortovo. Among them was Yakov Lvovich Rapoport, a distinguished pathologist; this book is a firsthand memoir of his imprisonment, revealling not only the suffering caused by a fabricated 'plot' but also the devastating climate of antisemitism and the appalling disarray of medicine and science in the Stalinist era."
