NELSON'S FAVOURITE: HMS AGAMEMNON AT WAR 1781-1809., Deane, Anthony. Dust jacket art by Geoff Hunt.
1 Deane, Anthony. Dust jacket art by Geoff Hunt. NELSON'S FAVOURITE: HMS AGAMEMNON AT WAR 1781-1809.
Caxton, London, 2003, reprint.
320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 184067430X Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, drawings, maps. "This compelling narrative recounts the 28-year career of HMS Agamemnon, a 64-gun ship of the line which became one of the most famous vessels of the Royal Navy, commanded between 1793 and 1796 by Nelson, who always referred to her as his favourite ship. For three of the most critical decades of British naval history, Agamemnon was at th e c e n t r e of events, fighting at the Battle of the Saintes, Copenhagen and, of course, Trafalgar. Later she served in the West Indies, participating in the Battle of Santo Domingo, and in South American waters until she was wrecked in 1809 in Ma l do na do B ay , off the coast of present-day Uruguay. This fascinating account of Agamemnon's career highlights all the significant events of the period and portrays the authentic world of the Nelsonic era." Probably composed in the first century A.D., it is the only Greek handbook of mythology to survive antiquity, and is a major source of our knowledge of Greek myths. Beginning with the birth of the gods and ending with the death of Odysseus, the 'Library' traces the destinies of such great mythic figures as Prometheus, Oedipus, Heracles, Daedalus, and the heroes of the Trojan War. Michael Simpson's new translation captures the fine simplicity and straightforwardness of the original. Leonard Baskin's drawings throw a unique contemporary light on this ancient world."
