THE CREST OF THE BROKEN WAVE: A NOVEL OF THE LIFE AND LOVES OF ROBERT BURNS. (VOLUME 4 OF "THE IMMORTAL MEMORY" SERIES.), Barke, James.
1 Barke, James. THE CREST OF THE BROKEN WAVE: A NOVEL OF THE LIFE AND LOVES OF ROBERT BURNS. (VOLUME 4 OF "THE IMMORTAL MEMORY" SERIES.)
Collins, London, 1953, 1st edition.
320 pp, small 8vo (7 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. "....gives a vivid picture of Robert Burns at the height of his creative powers, acclaimed as Scotland's national bard and yet bitterly aware of the empty glory of that fame so far as any worth-while improvement in his immediate prospects are concerned. He has left the scene of his brief triumph in the Edinburgh drawing-rooms. He is a farmer again, trying to wrest a living from the grudging soil of Ellisland . . . H e h a s very much on his mind the cares of a wife and family, for whom he is determined to make a home. Through these pages the sterling worth of Jean Armour shines like a star. Bonnie Jean has hitherto had scant justice paid to her by b io gr ap he rs . He re her character is limned with admiration and affection. One understands the strength of the bond between her and Burns, and how it could withstand the devastating impact of Burns's infatuation for Anna Park, the golden-haire d H ebe of th e G lo b e T ave rn in Dumfries....But the story is concerned too with Burns's intellectual development, not only as a poet but as a thinker peculiarly sensitive to the fresh political breezes that are blowing in so strongly from Fra nce. ...T he b ook ends wi th the aba ndonment of the farm and of the life he had known since boyhood, the never-ending struggle with the land; already the shadow of his last tragic years in Dumfies lies darkly across his path...." Four very sma ll in k che ck ma rks on ve rso of dedic ation page, previous owner's name on free front endpaper, one very small corner crease, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light browning to edges of textblock, light fading to color at bottom edge s and on spi ne - s ligh t fadi ng a t t op edg es, bo ok slightly cocked. 231 pp, 7 7/8" H. Dust jacket design by William Stobbs. B&w drawings. "Bari, a half-breed boy of the North American Indian country, has two driving passions: his love of the wild animals of his home in Northern Ontario, and his great urge to draw them. In these he is encouraged by Paddy, the friendly trapper who brings him up from the age of nine. But it is only after going unwillingly to school and then learning that success does not come without work and hardship that Bari eventually begins to see ahead of him the life on an artist which he had dreamed about for so long. Miss Carruthers taught for many years in a school for Indians in the Canadian bushland. She is a natural storyteller, and (this book) reflects vividly her profound knowledge and affection for the Indians and the wild life of the country." 4 Cazort, Mimi, edited and with introduction by. Foreword By Dr. Rene Pomerleau. (Henry Alexander Carmichael Jackson.) MR JACKSON'S MUSHROOMS.
Ottawa National Gallery of Canada 1979 088884364X / 9780888843647 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Henry Alexander Carmichael Jackson.
161 pp, 13" H. "(T)he record of a Canadian naturalist and artist, Henry Jackson, elder brother of A.Y. Jackson. It is also his record of changes, both social and environmental, that took place in Montreal and the Quebec countryside during the Depression, the Second World War, and the period immediately following. It is finally a testament to the rich inner recources of a man who, with very little money and no formal education, celebrated the abundance and variety of the natural world around him. The forty-two full-colour plates, forty reproduced actual size, reveal Jackson's extraordinary eye for detail and total command of technique. His masterful colouring and delicacy of touch fully transcend the original documentary purposes of his works. The detailed notebooks carefully kept from 1927 to 1954 richly illustrate not only Jackson's genuine, almost escapist, love of nature, but also his deep affection for people, especially the countryfolk, among whom he lived and worked." Very small area of color loss on rear board cloth. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, one tiny dent on rear flap-fold, a few tiny edge tears.

"(T)he story of a young Anglo-Irish beauty's visit to Delhi for the 1911 Royal Durbar, where a new King, George V, is to be proclaimed Emperor to reinforce the loyalty to the Crown of India's ruling Princes. For a fortnight of relentless ceremony, unheard of extravagance and imposing military spectacle, in the setting of a vast Tented City complete with its own farms, railway, telegraph and post offices, Lilah Wingfield meets many of the most remarkable colonial characters of the day, including some of the foremost Indian Princes, vying to stage the most lavish display to prove their devotion to the Raj. As the tents are dismantled, Lilah travels through India - to the dangerous Khyber Pass on the Afghan border, to Rajasthan, to the gory sites of the Mutiny and to stay with India's only female ruler, the Begum of Bhopal. Her diary shows her deepening awareness of the ambivalence of certain maharajahs towards British Rule even while she is being entertained royally in their lakeside palaces. Her Irish upbringing gives her an instictive feeling for the mixture of their longing for independence and an affection for the mother country." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. 9 Farmer, Penelope, ed. SISTERS: AN ANTHOLOGY.
London Allen Lane / Penguin Press 1999 0713993022 / 9780713993028 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
454 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). "As one of three sisters herself, Penelope Farmer sets her exploration of sisterhood in an autobiographical framework, describing loving and not so loving sisters in the past and present generations on all sides of her family. With the help of writers in many fields and over many centuries, she guides us through the peaks and troughs of sistery love, both between sisters and between sisters and brothers - from childhood, separation, love, marriage and parenthood, to old age and death itself. Famous literary sisters appear: the Brontes; Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell; the Mitfords; Mary Lamb and brother Charles; Vera Brittain. Alongside them the theatrical and musical ones: Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland; Maria Callas and her sister; Jacqueline du Pre and hers; Mozart and his sister. Then there are the well-known fictional sisters: the March sisters; Dorothea and Celia Brooke; the Schlegel sisters; Ursula and Gudrun from 'Women in Love'. And many not so well-known sisters, both fictional and non-fictional besides. We observe the sisterly bonds of bees, lions, elephants, gorillas and chimpanzees. We are guided by Richard Dawkins through the genetics of ant colonies. And, throughout, we are asked to reflect on the nature of sisterhood itself. Is a sister born not made? What is the essence of the sisterly bond? What relationship does that bond have to the myth of sisterhood constructed around it? - a myth leading to all those symbolic sisterhoods, of nurses, nuns, feminists and so forth, a section on whom concludes the book. Through poetry, prose, autobiography, memoir, science and anthroplogy , Penelope Farmer pieces together the world of sisters and sisterhood, creating a rich tapestry of evocative and often moving writing that will find echoes in the experience of all who have or are sisters, or even just those who would like to have had them." Slight bump to top/bottom of front hinge. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, tiny dint on spine.

128 pp, 11 1/4" H. "Strategically located at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River, the Rideau River system and Lake Ontario, the city of Kingston is cloaked in more than three hundred years of history. This picturesque city has attracted an increasing number of artists in recent years, and two of them - poet Joan Finnigan and painter Frank Johnston - have captured the character and spirit of Kingston in a book filled with photographs old and new, maps and engravings, paintings, drawings, historical vignettes and poetry. With an emphasis on the human aspects of Kingston life, (it) is an expression of affection not just for the city and its environs, but for its populace over the generations. Ten original watercolours by Frank Johnston - all faithfully reproduced in full colour - add to the beauty of the book. Along with the wealth of modern and archival material, they reflect the unique atmosphere of a city that has played a significant role in the history of Canada." KNIGHT'S CROSS: A LIFE OF FIELD MARSHAL ERWIN ROMMEL., Fraser, David.
11 Fraser, David. KNIGHT'S CROSS: A LIFE OF FIELD MARSHAL ERWIN ROMMEL.
HarperCollins, New York, 1993, book club edition.
601 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0060182229 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(S)hows how inspiringly spontaneous and superficially haphazard Rommel's style of leadership could be: 'Rommel believed that war is a re ckless, untidy business, and that the habits of mind of a methodical manager are alien to what is required'. Instead, his hallmarks were boldness of manoeuvre, ferocity of attack, and tenacity in pursuit. These were the qualities he display e d i n h is great battles in the North African desert; they were, David Fraser demonstrates, evident from his earliest battles in the First World War to his last, defending Fortress Europe from the Allied invasion of 1944....Rommel reached a posi ti on in w h ic h he almost inevitably became embroiled in politics. When he realized that the Allied invasion was going to succeed, he realized also that the only way to save Germany was somehow to negotiate a peace settlement. He tried to pres ent Hi t ler - to wh om he had always been devoted, and who had always shown him a particular respect and affection - with the military realities: he was branded a defeatist and ignored. But his opinions, and his apparent links (meticulously dis cuss ed b y Fras er) wi th t he Stauffenberg plotters of July 1944 - one of them, under interrogation, mentioned Rommel as a possible head of post-Hilterian Gemany - condemned him is the eyes of the Fuhrer he had served so loyally. He was offered the c hoice o f tri al b y a Peopl e's Court - a sham of course - or suicide, a state funeral and protection for his family. He chose the latter. Rommel is not, to David Fraser, a flawless hero: his failings as well as his genius are recorded here . But he ha d t hat in stinc t fo r batt le and leadership which set him apart from his contemporaries and places him among the great commanders." 12 Gardiner, John Edwin. Edited by David E. Smith. LETTERS HOME: THE WARTIME CORRESPONDENCE AND DIARY OF JOHN EDWIN GARDINER RCAF (1919-1942).
University of Regina / Canadian Plains Research Center, Regina, Saskatchewan, 2004.
197 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 088977157X B&w photographs. "John Edwin Gardiner was the eldest son of James 'Jimmy' Gardiner, the most prominent Liberal politician of his day in western Canada. Edwin was called up by the RCAF in November 1 940, received his Wings in October 1941, and travelled to England in early November 1941. On August 18, 1942, on the eve of the Dieppe Raid, Edwin wrote to his father: 'At long last we're going to take part in something big which you will r e a d a l l about in the papers long before you get this letter'. Edwin Gardiner was killed when his plane went down on the following day. James Gardiner, who had lost two brothers in the First World War, had now lost his son to war. His wife , Vi ol et , f ou nd the grief unbearable and took her own life in October 1944, yet another casualty of war. Gardiner kept all of Edwin's letters to the family. He investigated the circumstances of his son's death, visiting the graveyard at St. A ubi n L e C au f o n s eve r al occasions and writing a thorough record of his findings. To the end of his life, he maintained contact with the family of the Canadian pilot who died at the same time as Edwin and with the French family who cared for the ir g rave s. Joh n Ed win Ga rdiner's voice in 'Letters Home' is engaging, humorous, and intelligent. Like so many others of his generation, he exudes confidence and optimism despite the dangers of his situation. Perhaps most striking, a nd m ost t ouchi ng, h owe ver, is th e ge nui ne family affection that pervades these letters." Fine

176 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070924295 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "The liberation of the Netherlands in 1944-45 ended five long years of hardship, oppression, and the indignity of armed occupation. The German occupation culminated in the 'Hunger Winter' of 1944-45 when, deprived of food and fuel, thousands in the heavily populated western Netherlands starved to death. Most of the Jewish community had died in Nazi concent r a t i o n c amps and thousands of men had been deported to Germany as forced labour. No wonder the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian, British, American and Polish troops released a wave of unforgettable joy....Canadian soldiers recall th e ad va nc e ac r os s Belgium and the Netherlands as one of the most arduous and bitterely contested campaigns of the war. Often their tanks and heavy vehicles bogged down in the soggy terrain and the infantry had to advance on foot across the flo od ed pol der s and a lon g muddy dikes against well-defended German positions. To the soldiers, too, the liberation was a release from the terrors of war, and they joined gladly in the celebrations with the Dutch people. To most Canadians in 193 9 t he Neth erla nd s wa s a tin y far-away country about which they knew little. The momentous events of 1944-45 established a solid bond of affection between the two counties, strengthened after the war by the thousands of war brides and emigran ts w ho heade d for Ca nada. Th is al bum of words and pictures is published in a spirit of rememberance and celebration. Not only does it recapture the emotions of the Dutch at regaining their freedom, but it also commemorates a singular and no ble C ana dian a chieve ment ." Great not only in terms of numbers built and surviv ing, but in the affection generated by this amalgam of wood, wire and tube which has been responsible for training unknown thousands of airmen during more than half a century of uninterrupted operations. The Tiger Moth was born from the neces s i t y t o continue development of de Havilland's ubiquitous Moth family. Legends surrounding the development of the first DH82 have been embellished with the passage of time. In a Stag Lane shed, stagger and sweep were said to have ben determin ed b y pe n ci l calculations on the proverbial envelope while DH60G rear spars were shorteded with a handsaw. Following taxi trials, lower mainplane dihedral was added, adjusted to the length of the grass. The Tiger Moth has been privy to fifty yea rs of av ia tio n development. During her operational life she has seen wooden biplane airliners evolve into stainless steel projectiles carrying passengers faster than a rifle bullet. The Tiger Moth was conceived as a training aircraft, a ro le t o w hic h sh e w as a nd continues to be admirably suited, but as the photographs in this book illustrate, she has been adapted to almost every aviation situation possible to imagine. The aim (of this book) has been to present a balanced revie w of the life and time s of the Tiger Moth, from the early thirties to the present day, with a hint of the future added for good measure." New York Alfred A. Knopf 1984 0394868633 / 9780394868639 4th Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Anita Lobel.
Unpaginated, 10 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, charmingly illustrated in full colour throughout. "Though Clement C. Moore wrote the poem in New York City, most artists place it in an idyllic country setting. Now the Cadecott Medal winning artist, Anita Lobel, returns the poem to the city and brings to her illustrations the warmth and glowing detail that reflect her own affection for her city as it looked and felt in the late nineteenth century. With rows of rooftops and chimneys, the ornate interior of the sleeping house, and a miniature St. Nick coursing through the nighttime sky over a majestic bridge and a silent city, she has created a haunting Victorian vision of the Christmas classic."
