157 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations, march. "A Regiment forms a corporate body which takes on a life of its own, often rising above the weaknesses and inadequacies of its human fabric to perform seemingly superhuma n deeds such as the 'Immortal Stand' of the 24th Foot at Rorke's Drift during the Zulu War...Since their birth as Dering's Regiment in March 1689, the 24th (which in 1881 became the South Wales Borderers) have participated in nearly all th e l a r g e a n d small wars of the past 279 years from Cartagena in South America to Narvik in Arctic Norway. From Saratoga, in America's war of Independence, to Tsingtao in the Far East, where they gained a battle honour unique in the British A rm y . T he I st Ba tt alion, over which the shadow of amalgamation now lies, has recently returned from an operational tour of Aden. There they proved that the courage and steadfastness of the Regiment and of its individual sons is as strong as ev er . Th is boo k i s a fit ting tribute to them and to one of the greatest Regiments of all time." A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633., Bartholomew, J.G.
3 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
226 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "(T)he present volume deals with the countries of Asia, whose history and geography, and whose possibilities great and grave, are alike reflected in the maps and charts that follow. When Queen Elizabeth (I) granted to certain merchants of London a charter that gave them a roving commission to trade in the East Indies, she could not foresee the immense developments that were to rise from that adventurous commerce between east and west. The successive maps of India with their frontier changes mark the gradual advance of an old world toward the new one knit by powerful mutual ties to the Isle of Britain; and recently we have seen what it is to be hoped will open a greater era for those regions, marked by a return to the old captial of Delhi, and a resuming of ancient rites which first gained their symbolism in those lands. But Asia, as Japan has taught us and as China will undoubtedly teach us again, has her own destiny to bear out, apart from our European interests and politics; and it is in that aspect we need to study her on the lines laid down and made clear and positive in this volume. It is not the military records, the charts of mutinies and battle-fields, interesting as they are, which are alone important; but those showing the conditions, physical and climatic, of the country; the dispersion of the tongues, the sites of the old religions, the wealth and tillage of the earth with its fruits, grain and minerals, its rice fields and tea plantations; the prevalance of rain, sun and trade-winds; and the course of the sea-roads that affect its human and industrial life...In this Asian Atlas, of small dimensions as it requires to be to fit its pocket, Irkutsk in the north, 'far Mandalay', the details of the East and West Indies, the route of Marco Polo, coasts like the Carnatic, towns like Lucknow and Cawnpore, Lhasa, 'the Forbidden City' of Tibet, and Matsuye, the old capital of Idzumo, which Lafcadio Hearn describes, all have their record." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinages of Asia from the Earliest Times to the Present Day" by J. Allan, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in Asia having an Historic Interest" and an Index. Slight fading to spine color, small are of minor color loss on top of text block, very light browning to edges of text block, minor edge wear, small dplit in paper of front inside hinge, browning to pages 110/111 due to laid in newspaper clipping, slight browning to free endpapers - tiny foxing mark on front endpaper. Leo Cooper, London, 1976, first edition.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. ISBN 085052229 Color frontispiece, b&w photographs, maps, 'family tree'. "In the early 1960s a new concept for the organisation of the Infantry was devised - the voluntary formation of Large Regiments. This is the story of the first: the Royal Anglian Regiment, with four regular battalions, formed from the seven county regiments of East Anglia and the East Midlands. These regiments, each with long and highly individual histories and tradition s , m a d e a decision to unite, a step which required goodwill, tolerance, trust and determination to made the union succeed. In some quarters, the Large Regiment concept was a nail in the coffin of the treasured regimental system; to others, i t wa s a m ea ns of retaining the essential features of that system while withstanding the stresses of change in the Army as a whole. The Royal Anglians have had ten years in which to test their experiment, years of futher reductions in the Arm y, of t rai nin g a s a i rpo r table and mechanized infantry, keeping the peace in distant garrisons, as United Nations troops, and above all the years of bullet and bomb in Aden and Ulster. This book describes how the dangers and difficulties o f t hose ye ars have wel ded to geth er a new regiment of modern infantry, highly trained and professional yet still conscious of inherited traditions. Chiefly, it is a picture of the contemporary British infantryman, disciplined and brave in ac tion , pat ient and chee rful in a dve rsity , a new breed in many ways but with all the best qualities of his forefathers and, in a confused world, a figure of hope and reassurance." Very faint cigarette odor, small soft bump to top corner of p ages, light wear at t op of front hing e/sp ine, l ight rubbing, fore-edge of front cover is lightly faded, minor soiling to bottom of textblock, very light browning to edges of textblock, tiny speck on top of textblock, very faint crease and s light fading on spi ne. "(T)he story of a young Anglo-Irish beauty's visit to Delhi for the 1911 Royal Durbar, where a new King, George V, is to be proclaimed Emperor to reinforce the loyalty to the Crown of India's ruling Princes. For a fortnight of relentless ceremony, unheard of extravagance and imposing military spectacle, in the setting of a vast Tented City complete with its own farms, railway, telegraph and post offices, Lilah Wingfield meets many of the most remarkable colonial characters of the day, including some of the foremost Indian Princes, vying to stage the most lavish display to prove their devotion to the Raj. As the tents are dismantled, Lilah travels through India - to the dangerous Khyber Pass on the Afghan border, to Rajasthan, to the gory sites of the Mutiny and to stay with India's only female ruler, the Begum of Bhopal. Her diary shows her deepening awareness of the ambivalence of certain maharajahs towards British Rule even while she is being entertained royally in their lakeside palaces. Her Irish upbringing gives her an instictive feeling for the mixture of their longing for independence and an affection for the mother country." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. 268 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0750906170 Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "From military ballooning in the Sudan in the nineteenth century to helicopter assignments in the Gulf in the late twentieth, Arm y aviation has been at the forefront of Britain's military operations. Here, for the first time, the remarkable story of the Army Air Corps is compellingly told....The British Army was first involved in airborne operations as early as the 1 8 8 0 s , w h en it established a Balloon Section in the Corps of Royal Engineers. Subsequently, it was among the first armies in the world to recognize the military implications of the invention of the aeroplane and, following the success of t h e Ai r Ba tt al i on , which replaced the Balloon Section in 1911, a handful of enthusiasts emerged to form the Royal Flying Corps. The Army returned to the air once more with the outbreak of the Second World War, making a unique contribution to gr ou nd op era tio ns th rou gh aerial observation for artillery and by providing glider pilots for British airborne forces. Soldier pilots were retained after the war for target spotting and liaison work, and when helicopters arrived, the Army i nsi ste d o n o pera ting th ose eng age d in the warp and weft of land battle, reviving its own Army Air Corps to this end. 'The Army in the Air' tells the fascinating story of those spirited and skilled individuals who lie behind the distinguis hed hist ory of t he Ar my Ai r Co rps, from the early military balloonists of the Victorian age to the efficient fighting force of today - and tomorrow." "From Bruneval to North Africa, from Normandy to Suez, by parachute and glider the men of the Airborne Forces have gone by air to battle. But their activities have by no means been confined to purely airborne operations - the Special Air Service performed prodigies of valour behind the German Lines in the Western Desert and Italy; the Glider Pilot Regiment fought beside their infantry com rades in Normandy, at Arnhem and across the Rhine. Their post-war successors, maintaining these traditions, have stood between Jew and Arab in Palestine; fought and sweltered in the jungles of Malaya and Borneo; sweated in the Persian Gulf a n d t h e Radfan; choked on the summer dust of Cypriot roads; tasted the grit and sand of Egypt and Jordan in their mess tins; spent more than a deade facing terroritst ambush, bombs and bullets in Northern Ireland; exprienced the subzero temperat ur es an d bi t ing actic winds of the South Atlantic and 'tabbed' across the Falklands to spearhead victory in 1982. Nor should the aircrews who flew them be forgotten, or the air supply despatchers who maintained them, and the units who supporte d t hem . W it h w el l over 100 photographs and illustrations this book is a comprehensive single-volume history of the Airborne Forces. Accounts are given of the airborne actions fought by the British Army, whilst the development of the parachu te a ssau lt and th e us e o f glider-borne troops can be followed from their infancy to the massive 'coup de main' technique employed in the Rhine crossing." THE ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS (THE 91st AND 93rd HIGHLANDERS). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Sutherland, Douglas. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
17 Sutherland, Douglas. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS (THE 91st AND 93rd HIGHLANDERS). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1969, first edition.
127 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Raised separately at the end of the eighteenth century as the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders and the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders, (the Regiments) saw many adventures before they were merged as one Regiment in 1881. Both saw service in many parts of the world, the 93rd in particular gaining immortal fame as 'The Thin Red Line' at Balaclava and in winning seven V.C.s before breakfast at the relief of Luck n o w . T h ere have been few spheres of military activity in British history over the past 250 years in which the Argylls have not been involved and in the great catastrophes of the 1914-18 and 1939-45 wars they have been in the forefront of the b at tl e, a d di ng lustre to an already famous name. Commander after commander has paid tribute to the fighting qualities of the Regiment who time and again have proved their worth. Leo Cooper, London, (1993), first edition.
169 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Maps. ISBN 0850523206 "Between the years 1948 and 1960, British armed forces were involved in six campaigns overseas, in Malaya, Korea, Cyprus, Suez and South Arabia. In order to provide the manpower for these operations, fixed-term universal male peacetime conscription was instituted for the only time in this country's history. Of the million and a half men called up on reaching the age of eighteen, about a hundred and twenty-five thousand, or one in twelve, served in an active theatre of operations, for which a campaign medal was awarded...This book consists of the reminiscences of twenty-three of these men, who each served in one, or in some cases two, of the six campaigns. They recall, often with some emotion, their service in far-off places, against largely invisible enemies, in pursuit of aims which remain obscure to this day. They remember the brutality, the hardship, the excitement and the humour of an experience which for all of them appears to have been an important, if sometimes painful, part of the process of growing up. They also record, in many cases, the indifference, both personal and official, with which they were treated on their return home, and this book represents an attempt, however small and belated, to set straight the record regarding the achievements of these 'virgin soldiers'." Very light browning to top of textblock, small ghost sticker mark on front pastedown. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, very light rubbing - mainly on rear panel. VG+/VG+
