BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
5 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

Collins, London, 1967.
153 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Enid Blyton did not mean to write this book. There were already four books in this Mystery Series, all about Roger, Diana, Snubby and his mad little spaniel - four books in which th e circus boy, Barney, was seeking his unknown father. In 'The Rubadub Mystery' he found him - and that was to be the end of the series. But the lovers of these 'Barney Books' begged so hard for yet another, that there was nothing for it b u t t o w r i te a fifth. So here it is, sure of a tremendous welcome, for here are all the well-loved characters again - with Loony the spaniel and Miranda the monkey, madder and more comical than ever! A winter holiday down at Rat-at-Tat Hou se , in th e s no w- cl ad hills, cut off from everywhere - and mystery and adventure spring up out of the snow! Who came knocking at night! Whose were the mysterious footprints in the snow? What was the wandering Snowman? What was hidden in th e c el lar ? T hi s is ind eed a very strange mystery - an Enid Blyton Mystery which, as ever, will hold your attention from the first word to the last." FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS., Boileau, John.
7 Boileau, John. FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS.
Formac, Halifax, 2004.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 088780621X B&w and colour photographs. "In the search for the perfect flying machine, hydrofoils were born. In 1919, Alexander Graham Bell and his young collaborator, Casey Baldwin, broke a world spe ed record when their hydrofoil prototype, HD4, skimmed across Lake Bras d'Or at 61.5 knots. This book is a complete re-examination of the Canadian research into hydrofoil vessels in the twentieth century. It describes how Baldwin and his c o l l e a g u e s, generously supported by Mabel Bell and under the guidance of the great inventor, built and tested numerous prototypes until they finally succeeded in building a high-speed hydrofoil for the navy. By the end of the Second World Wa r, C an ad a ha d th e third largest navy in the world and was set to be at the forefront of anti-submarine warfare. The Bell-Baldwin research was the foundation of the development of a small, fast vessel that could patrol the oceans, protectin g t he Wes t f rom t he Co ld War menace. Author John Boileau introduces the team of naval architects and engineers who tested prototypes in Halifax Harbour during the 1950s and 1960s. Their efforts led to HMCS Bras d'Or, the ultra-modern hydrofoi l ve sse l th at e stab lis hed an oth er world record before it was mothballed. Like the Avro Arrow story, 'Fastest in the World' exposes how brilliant innovation is not a guarantee of success for Canadian designers." Fine

NAPOLEON ON NAPOLEON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE EMPEROR., Bonaparte, Napoleon. Edited by Somerset de Chair.
8 Bonaparte, Napoleon. Edited by Somerset de Chair. NAPOLEON ON NAPOLEON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE EMPEROR.
Brockhampton, London, 1998, reprint.
288 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860198767 B&w and colour illustrations. "During the six years of exile on St Helena, between Waterloo and his death, Napoleon dictated momoirs, notes, letters and battle commentaries to the generals who shared his captivity. He then corrected the material himself. Napoleon used his time in captivity to explain the motives, beliefs and doubts that drove him; to analyse strategies which turned France's Revolution into the French Em pire and examine the tactics that made the Grand Army masters of Europe. He recorded his birth at Ajaccio in 1769, and his genteel but impoverished Corsican childhood. He notes his entry at the age of 10 to the military school in Briennes, a n d h i s own early enthusiasm for the Revolution, which lessened in the face of the Terror...In this book, (the editor) has incorporated much new material from three further volumes of notes and miscellanies dictated by Napoleon at St Helena, i n ad di t io n to the four volumes of Memoirs published in 1823. As before, he has let Napoleon speak in the first person throughout, rather than in the more formal third person of the original text. The result is a fascinating account of Napoleo n' s l ife i n h is ow n words, from his childhood in Corsica to his defeat in Waterloo in 1815. Private concerns, such as feuds with his brothers and divorce from Josephine, are mixed with such matters of state as the rebellion of Toussaint-Louv ert ure and the ret rea t fr om Moscow. Over 90 carefully selected illustrations make this a superbly illustrated, detailed autobiography of one of history's great characters." Fine/Near Fine

ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.), Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P.
9 Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P. ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.)
Bison, London, 1988, first edition.
192 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 086124415X Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "A member of the aristocracy, from the tenth century the Samurai was primarily a mounted archer . This is reflected in the light, lamellar yoroi armour which left the right arm free for drawing his bow. Helmets were simple, with leather neckpieces. Battle began with an exchange of arrows, and was followed by a series of hand-to-han d c o m b a t s among champions who relied on the sword. The long wars of Kusonoki and Ashikaga produced several changes in the nature of warfare. Fighting in wooded, mountainous countryside, hand-to-hand combat came into its own. The bulky yor oi wa s su pe rc ed ed by the lighter, less constricting do maru and the no dachi, a longer version of the naginata (glaive), was introduced. The renowned Samurai cult of the sword began in this period. The Samurai's most ornate and elaborate ar mou r da te s f rom th e T oku gawa era, and was probably not intended for use in actual battle. The long development of arms and armour in the Samurai's 700-year history is fully detailed in this handsome volume. Illustrated with over 300 photo grap hs , (i t) will be a we lcom e ad dition to the libraries of all military enthusiasts." THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (241 BC - AD 193)., Braud, David C., ed. (Joyce Reynolds, W.S. Hanson, David C. Braud.)
10 Braud, David C., ed. (Joyce Reynolds, W.S. Hanson, David C. Braud.) THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (241 BC - AD 193).
University of Exeter Press, Exeter, 1993, reprint.
109 pp, 8 1/4" H, soft cover. Map, 2 plans. ISBN 0859892042 "The overseas empire which Rome acquired from the third century BC onwards was perhaps the single most important issue in Roman history thereafter, as the Roman city-state became ever mo re like a world-state. The empire had to be administered. This volume shows how, to a large extent, it came to run itself. In his introduction, David Braund examines the essential framework of the empire as it developed throughout the p e r i o d . H e draws attention to the impact of empire upon Rome itself - an impact that was not only social and economic but also political and ideological. Joyce Reynolds utilises neglected sources - particularly inscriptions - to present an a cc ou nt o f th e r ol e of cities in the life of the empire. W.S. Hanson formulates recent advances in archaeology in his discussion of Roman involvement in the creation of towns in non-urban areas of the western empire, most notably Britain. In the fi nal c hap te r , D avi d Braund presents the results of the latest research on the client kings and queens who bore much of the brunt of empire and who became, from Augustus onwards, ever more a part of the empire, obtaining citizenship and eve n se ats in the Rom an Sen ate by the beginning of the second century AD. A substantial bibliography is appended." "Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement had promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday (former Chicago lawyer) learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention. The kingdom was a ruin. The Barons refused to recognize a king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything. Ben's only followers were the incompetent Court Magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe; and the lovely Willow - but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor - ."
