JACK'S WAR: LOWER-DECK RECOLLECTIONS FROM WORLD WAR II., Connell, G.G.
1 Connell, G.G. JACK'S WAR: LOWER-DECK RECOLLECTIONS FROM WORLD WAR II.
Crecy 1995 0947554556 / 9780947554552 Revised Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
236 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "Ordinary seamen far outnumber their officers, yet most naval books are written from the officers' standpoint. In a wide variety of reminiscences the author reconstructs the matelot's life, whether in corvette, battleship or destroyer, or whether as Royal Navy, Reservist, RNVR or Hostilities Only; he writes both of the pleasures of shipboard life and of the often harsh discipline meted out for lapses from the strict naval code. There were happy ships and unhappy ships, lucky ships and unlucky ships, and he instances experiences from them. Throughout the book he links the experiences of the seamen to the great actions of the war taking place around them, which are thus seen not from the viewpoint of the captain or admiral but the men who fired the guns, the engineers, etc. Thus we get new perspectives on the Battle of the River Plate, Convoy PQ17, the invasion of Sicily, the Battle of Sirte, and many other actions." Includes a Glossary of Lower-deck words and phrases and Appendix: Extracts from King's Rules and Admiralty Regulations 1939 and 1943. ACHILLES IN VIETNAM: COMBAT TRAUMA AND THE UNDOING OF CHARACTER., Shay, Jonathan.
10 Shay, Jonathan. ACHILLES IN VIETNAM: COMBAT TRAUMA AND THE UNDOING OF CHARACTER.
Atheneum, New York, 1994, second printing.
246 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0689121822 "Gradually, it has come to be known that the combat veterans of Vietnam suffer, in appalling numbers, from what is known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Indeed, of the three quarters of a million surviving combat veterans, one quarter of a million suffer from this disorder and the personal costs it imposes. Dr. Jonathan Shay casts new, challenging, and irrefutable lights on the lives of these men and the r a v ages of combat trauma on their minds and spirits. For many years, Dr. Shay has been the psychiatrist for a group of Vietnam veterans. In that time, he has come to see an overwhelming and undeniable similiarity between their experiences and t ho se o f the soldiers in the 'Iliad'; after all, this centuries-old epic is about soldiers in war and its disastrous consequences for their character. More specifically, the elements of Achilles' story - the betrayal by his commander, the shrin ki ng of his moral and social world to a small group of friends, the death of one or more of these comrades, the accompanying feelings of grief, guilt, and numbness followed by a 'berserk' rage - are heard over and over in the stories of these men who we re once soldiers and are still caught up in that old struggle. Drawing at length on these men's vivid and heart-rending words, as well as on Dr. Shay's own close, ingenious, and persuasive reading of Homer's classic story, (this book) has alre ady bee n acc laimed by soldiers, writers, classicists, and psychiatrists. It should transform any and all future discussions of the Vietnam War." Moderate wrinkling and two creases down front free endpaper, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of sp ine. Dus t ja cket h as minor edge wrinkling, very small tear at bottom of rear flap-fold. Very Good/Very Good

Amherst University of Massachusetts Press 1976 0870232061 / 9780870232060 Sixth printing Soft Cover Very Good+ Leonard Baskin
311 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "The immortal characters of Greek mythology enact their dramas, conflicts, and passions in the 'Library of Apollodorus'. Probably composed in the first century A.D., it is the only Greek handbook of mythology to survive antiquity, and is a major source of our knowledge of Greek myths. Beginning with the birth of the gods and ending with the death of Odysseus, the 'Library' traces the destinies of such great mythic figures as Prometheus, Oedipus, Heracles, Daedalus, and the heroes of the Trojan War. Michael Simpson's new translation captures the fine simplicity and straightforwardness of the original. Leonard Baskin's drawings throw a unique contemporary light on this ancient world."
