2 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

6 Blake, Steve and Lloyd, Scott. With John Baldock. THE KEYS TO AVALON: THE TRUE LOCATION OF ARTHUR'S KINGDOM REVEALED.
Shaftesbury, Dorset Element 2000 1862047359 / 9781862047358 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
302 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w maps, family trees, decorations, colour and b&w photographs. "(The authors) unearth the truth about King Arthur and the magical realm of Avalon. They reveal how, through their investigations, they traced original key documents which had lain neglected for centuries. By combining the ancient sources with an intimate knowledge of the British landscape, they have managed to cast new light on the Dark Ages. Every piece of the puzzle they have put together fits - perfectly. The authors prove that the stories about Arthur and Avalon are rooted firmly within historical events which took place within a precise geographical setting in Wales; they also expose how and to what ends Arthurian legend has been hijacked for political gain throughout the ages. By establishing the historical facts about Arthur, his knights and the exact location of Avalon, (they) rip away the tissue of fabrication and fairy-tale that has shrouded the true origins of the British people and of anyone claiming ancestry from these isles." Book is very slightly cocked. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very minor edge wear, minor browning at inside edges, minor rubbing.

A SECRET HISTORY OF THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR., Butler, Alan and Dafoe, Stephen.
9 Butler, Alan and Dafoe, Stephen. A SECRET HISTORY OF THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR.
Magpie, London, 2009.
233 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 9781849010368 "The true genesis of the Knights Templar belongs far back in time, long before Christianity even developed. The Templars were an offshoot of a little understood monastic brotherhood, the Cistercian s, who themselves danced to the tune of an extremely powerful group of individuals inhabiting Burgundy and Flanders from the time of the Romans onwards. Butler and Defoe offer a detailed account of the rise of a specific group identified as ' t h e T r oyes Fraternity' which did not simply respond to the caprices of history, but made it. Behind the Knights Templar lay a belief pattern almost as old as humanity and a heritage that was already ancient before recorded history began. Th e st or y i s bo th fascinating and compulsive. It will leave the reader in no doubt as to the true intentions of the Knights Templar, or of the shadowy but immensely influential organization that brought them into being. This story is both surpris in g a nd sh oc ki ng, and its implications for our orthodox view of history are staggering." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Royal coronation robes are truly spectacular, being made of the finest and richest materials, elaborately embroidered in gold, while the officers of Church and State are arrayed in the full panoply of their ceremonial dress in honour of th e So ve reign. The Peers in robes of crimson velvet with ermine trimming and cape, the Knights of the Orders of Chivalry in richly coloured robes and insignia, the Officers of Arms in their tabards and the great Officers of State are massed in rank s of rar e and unforgettable splendour. There are many other occasions on which ceremonial robes are regularly worn, and seen and admired by millions. The State Opening of Parliament brings together the Peers and Judges, the Officers of State and t he Bish ops to hear the Queen's Gracious Speech from the Throne. The annual Garter Ceremony at Windsor is an opportunity to see the Queen and other members of the Royal Family in their blue silk velvet Garter robes, accompanied by the Knights of th e Garte r and the Heralds of the College of Arms. At the Lord Chancellor's Breakfast in October, marking the beginning of the legal year, the most senior Judges wear their splendid black and gold gowns - made of black damask elaborately trimmed wit h gold l ace and handmade gold ornaments - and the High Court Judges their scarlet robes trimmed with ermine, as they process with black-gowned barristers between the House of Lords and Westminster Abbey. In the summer, degree ceremonie s take pl ace all over the country, and an extraordinary number of variations on the basic theme of the academic gown and hood can be seen. DONITZ AND THE WOLF PACKS., Edwards, Bernard.
12 Edwards, Bernard. DONITZ AND THE WOLF PACKS.
Brockhampton, London, 1999, reprint.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860199275 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The U-boat, the submarine of the German Navy, was a hidden predator, which would steal up on its prey out of sight beneath the waves. T he tactics were much like the wild wolf of the forest, whose grey camouflage would keep it out of sight until it chose to attack. Just as the wolf was even more effective when it roamed in groups, cornering its quarry before catching it, so A d m i r a l Karl Donitz chose to use the grey hulls of his submarines in packs - 'wolf packs'. This simple yet stunningly successful tactic came very close to winning the Battle of the Atlantic and inflicted huge losses of Allied merchant and nava l ve ss el s a nd their crews. With the packs dispersing after an attack as quickly as they had gathered for it, defence against the strategy was fraught with difficulty and only the U-boats' inability to wage their warfare without surfacing gave th e A lli es a ch a nce of fighting back. In this empathetic and deeply researched volume, (the author) delves beneath the myths and legends of submarinal action and convoy protection to discuss the realities of wolf pack deployment. He explains wha t ca used Do ni tz to employ the plan and how close his scheme came to destroying Allied resistance. It is an account of a remarkable naval tactic, cunningly used with great brutality by men who themselves withstood awesome deprivation, secur ing the a dulat ion of the ir nation." "....(studies the architecture of London and) beyond to Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire, a nd elsewhere up to a limit of forty miles to introduce and describe the fine houses, churches, abbeys, palaces, and other buildings deserving of public interest in some of the home counties. It could justly be claimed that no major buildi n g o f a r c h itectural merit from Norman to our own time is overlooked, and some of the greater glories of London's stone are the subject of concise yet comprehensive essays, Westminster Abbey, for example, and the peculiarly beautiful Eltham P al ac e , so su rp ri si ngly situated in what is now one of London's populous suburbs. But Mr Godfrey is far from a mere guide. His book brims with profound knowledge and an engaging enthusiasm. He understands that most of his readers are not v ers ed in t he t erm s a nd ref erences of architecture, and these are introduced one by one, and the wonders and excitements of the art of building are revealed in their various beauty. Architectural features and comparative styles, together with pla ns and de tai le d dr awin gs, are included in the 59 text figures, and there are 64 pages of plates containing 104 photographs and rare prints of buildings as they appeared in the past...." UNKNOWN SOLDIERS: THE STORY OF THE MISSING OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Hanson, Neil.
19 Hanson, Neil. UNKNOWN SOLDIERS: THE STORY OF THE MISSING OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 2005, first American edition.
474 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0307263703 B&w photographs, map. "The First World War was a conflict of unprecedented ferocity that unleashed such demons as mechanized warfare and mass death on the twentieth century. After the last shot was fired and the troops marched home, approximately three million soldiers remained unaccounted for. Some bodies were found, but they bore no trace of identification; many more men had been blown to smithereens or had s i m p l y vanished into battlefields where as many as a hundred shells had fallen on every square yard. An unassuming English chaplain first proposed a symbolic burial of one of those unknown soldiers in memory of all the missing dead. The idea w as p ic ke d u p by almost every country that had an army in the war, and each laid a body to rest amid an outpouring of national grief - in London's Westminster Abbey, Paris's Arc de Triomphe, Rome's Victor Emmanuelle Monument, and, for the United St ate s, Arl in gt on National Cemetery in Virginia. In (this book, the author) offers an unflinching yet compassionate account of the reality of battle on the front lines. He focuses on three soldiers - an American, an Englishman, and a German - an d na rra tes the ir war experiences through their diaries and letters. (He) describes how each man endured the nearly unbearable conditions in the trenches and in the air and relates what is known about their deaths; all three died on the batt lefie lds o f th e So mme, wi thin gunshot sound of one another. He delves into their familial ties, the ideals they expressed in their letters, and he explains how the death of one, the American pilot George Seibold, was instrumental in the creat ion of the G old S tar M other s, a n organization caring for bereaved mothers, wives, and families that is still active today. Hanson animates and brings to life the combatants who perished without a trace, and shows how the Western world arrived at the now ti me-hon ored w ay of mourn ing and paying tribute to all those who die in war."
