2 Elliot-Wright, Philipp. Colour plates by Christa Hook. RIFLEMAN: ELITE SOLDIERS OF THE WARS AGAINS NAPOLEON. MILITARY ILLUSTRATED.
Publishing News, London, 2000.
144 pp, 4to (12" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1903040027 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, uniform studies, maps/battle plans. "(T)ells the story of one of the great military elites of the past - the Rifleman. It shows him at his finest moment in the green jacket of the 95th Rifles in the wars against Napoleon. It reveals the way he fought, the weapons and equipment he used, and the tactics he perfected. First-hand accounts are matched by bri lliant colour reconstructions of the Rifleman, bringing the reality of the battle to the reader. The invention of the rifle gave a new twist to warfare. Hunters became soldiers who fought in green and hid behind cover - the days of brightly - u n i f o r med ranks of men exchanging volleys of fire was over. Developed in the forests of North America, the Rifleman revolutionised the art of war. In the campaigns against Napoleon, units of British Riflemen took on French light infantry a rm ed w it h mu sk ets. Trained to act independently and with a respect for his own skills, the Rifleman was an exceptionally intelligent warrior, the forefather of today's combat soldier. His greatest moments in the Peninsular War and at the bat tle of Wa ter lo o a re vividly described in first-hand accounts, but some of the myths of the Rifleman are also punctured." Previious owner's small stamp on front pastedown, very light edge wear at corners and at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacke t ha s li ght rubb ing on rea r panel, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, crease across bottom edge of front panel. Very Good+/Very Good

CORUNNA., Hibbert, Christopher.
3 Hibbert, Christopher. CORUNNA.
London B.T. Batsford 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good -
216 pp, 9" H. B&w plates, drawings, maps. Wraparound jacket art reproduces an aquatint of the death of Sir John Moore by T. Sutherland. "(The first book) to be devoted exclusively to the Battle of Corunna and to the short campaign which preceded it. Mr Hibbert has made extensive use of the many eye-witness accounts which survive in the form of official despatches, histories, diaries, memoirs and letters. With the aid of these, he not only shows a remarkable understanding of Sir John Moore and his fellow-officers, of their conflicting characters and views, but he also provides, through the eyes of officers and men alike, a horrifying picture of the hardships of this brief and bitter campaign. The narra-tive is made the more vivid by the numerous illustrations from contemporary paintings and engravings, and by the five specially prepared maps." Previous owner's small name stamp on front pastedown, top corner clipped off the front free endpaper, a few small light soiling marks on preliminaries preceding frontispiece, light edge wear - mostly on bottom edge. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has one small edge chip with small tear, very light edge wear - mostly on spine edges, small scuff on spine, browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, light browning on spine, a 4" pencil line and a 4" faint scratch on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.
