Denied schooling, employment and adequate health care and confined to their homes unless accompanied by a male relative, women struggled to s ur vi ve . " 'If there is no objection, I will take my Division tomorrow and go to Gettysburg.' With these words Major- General Henry Heth set in train the course of events culminating in the titanic clash around the small Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. On 1 July two Confederate Corps swept towards this strategic crossroads as Federal troops fought a desper a t e d e l aying action. The men of the Army of Northern Virginia were the best in the Confederacy. Under Robert E. Lee they had whipped every Federal force sent against them, and they were confident this time would be no exception. As the firs t at ta c ks s we pt forward full of confidence they were met by a storm of fire. Judging from the determination of their bluecoated adversaries this was going to be no ordinary fight." "(This series) presents the military enthusiast with a new a ng le on th e m ajo r b attlefields of history. Supported by comprehensive organisation diagrams the forces involved are examined unit-by-unit, including the 'tooth' combat elements and the vital 'tail' support troops. The objectives of the operat ion ar e a nal ysed and thi s 'theory' contrasted with the realities of the battle itself." Toronto Macmillan Canada 1992 0771591764 / 9780771591761 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
358 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, "When war broke out in September 1939, the Allied air forces had few combat aircraft and even fewer military pilots ready to fight. It was clear that air superiority would determine the outcome of the war, so in December 1939, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada created the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Most of the air crew training took place in Canada. The success of the plan depended on its instructors. At the beginning of the war bush pilots, barnstormers, commercial pilots, crop-dusters, amateur aviators, and First World War veterans were called up to begin the huge task of training. Most of their students went to the front, but some were kept in Canada to instruct the next generation of recruits. At its peak, the plan administered 107 schools and 184 other units at 231 sites across Canada, operated 11,000 aircraft, and employed 104,000 men and women. The BCATP trained 200,000 air crew in less than five years. FDR and Winston Churchill called their work 'the decisive factor' in the war." Book is Near Fine. THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS., Burton, Tim.
17 Burton, Tim. THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS.
Hyperion Books for Children, New York, 1993, first edition (stated and with complete number line).
Unpaginated, oblong (9 1/4" H x 11 1/4" D) hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1562824112 Illustrated in Tim Burton's characteristicly eerie style. "In all the world, there's no place like Halloweenland and Jack Skellington is Halloween's most important figure. It's Jack who devises Halloween's most macabre tricks and frights, and he's done it year after year with delight. But this year, something isn't quite right: Jack has grown bored with the usual Halloween pranks, and the joy of seeing shock and horror on people's faces has faded. One night, while out for a walk in the woods, Jack stumbles upon something he's never seen before: a strange door carved into a tree. Stepping through the door, Jack stumbles into a world unlike any he's ever known. He finds himself in a bright, cheerful, colorful place called Christmas Town. Immediately captivated by all the Christmas sights - shining tinsel, sparkling lights, gaily wrapped presents, and sweet confections - Jack knows that he must somehow find a way to become part of it all. And Santa Claus himself provides the key as Jack decides to bring Christmas to Halloween - with Jack starring in Santa's role!" Minor rubbing on rear board. Unpaginated, oblong large 8vo (9 1/2" H x 11 1/4" D). B&w photographic studies of men, many nude. The limited text is in French, German and English. "Joseph Caprio was born in Grenoble. He discovered photography about fifteen years ago. He was a pupil of 'masters' such as C.R. Dityvon, Fulvio Roiter and J.F. Bauret who gave him advice and encouragement. Convinced that black and white fully recreated his visions, he essentially works using these tones. His favourtie themes work well in black and white, particularly natural settings, architectural details, choreographic shows, portraits and nudes, particularly male nudes."
