CHARLES' GIFT: SALUTE TO A MARYLAND HOUSE OF 1650. WITH SIGNED LETTER., Footner, Hulbert. (William Hulbert Footner.)
4 Footner, Hulbert. (William Hulbert Footner.) CHARLES' GIFT: SALUTE TO A MARYLAND HOUSE OF 1650. WITH SIGNED LETTER.
New York Harper & Brothers 1939 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Paul Braun & Arthur Mooney, photography. Inscribed By Author
290 pp, 8 7/8" H. Dark blue cloth spine (with gilt lettering/decoration) and corners, light blue paper-covered boards and endpapers. B&w photographs by Paul Braun, Arthur Mooney and others. Inscribed on half title page: "Norah and Chew Atkins / their book inscribed in / memory of old times by / Hulbert Footner / Jan 22nd 1940". Also included, an autograph letter signed by Footner, on Charlesgift notepaper, referring to a possible visit and mentioning that "For August everything too, is uncertain. I have a lot of theatrical business coming to a head, and it may be necessary for me to be in New York at that time." (Footner uses small x's instead of periods in the text.) The envelope is postmarked Solomons, MD, 1916. During the 1916-17 season, Footner's play "Shirley Kaye" had a reasonably successful run at the Hudson Theatre, New York and the proceeds helped in the restoration of Charles' Gift. Also laid in at front, the previously folded, chipped and wrinkled/creased front panel and flap from the original dust jacket. Hulbert Footner (1879-1944) explored large areas of Northern Canada by canoe in his early years and produced works of fiction and non-fiction based on his experiences. He was also a playwright and in later life, a successful mystery writer, creating such characters as Madame Rosika Storey. This semi-autobiographical book details the purchase and restoration of an historic house, but also looks back into the history of Calvert County and recounts the people and events that played a part in Footner's life for over thirty years. Minor wrinkle at top of spine, light browning and scattered tiny/small foxing marks on edges of text block - mainly on top and top corner, a few small foxing marks on preliminary pages and on the last few blank papes, a few tiny dents on bottom of text block.

ADMIRALS IN COLLISION., Hough, Richard.
6 Hough, Richard. ADMIRALS IN COLLISION.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1959, first edition.
174 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "On June 22nd, 1893, the British Mediterranean Fleet, the greatest naval fighting force and the most powerful weapon in the world, was on peacetime manoeuvres off Syria. The weather was fine, the sea calm, the eleven great ironclads were cruising in perfect formation at moderate speed. Then, at 3:31 p.m. the order was given from the flagship to bring the fleet, through a delicate and complex evolution, to its anchorage off Tripoli, barely three miles distant. The calamitous result of this signal was to strike horror throughout Europe and America, and to bring into disrepute the conduct, the principles of tactics and of discipline, and the fundamentals of w a r s h i p design, in the Royal Navy. The author has explored deeply into the causes of this strange and obscure catastrophe that created such outrage, but was never satisfactorily explained then, and ever since has been the subject of controv e rs y an d pr ej ud ice. The incident concerned two battleships, crack men-o'-war that were hardly safe even in peace; two admirals, strongly contrasting in temperament, intelligence and authority; and a series of fluttering flags that initiated t he ex tr aor di nar y e vol ution. Richard Hough believes that the answer to the enigma must lie in the characters of these admirals, Sir George Tryon, K.C.B., and Albert Hastings Markham; the one imperious, intimidating and self-confident; the ot her ear nes t an d w ell- inte ntio ned, but anxious and fretful. This account of their backgrounds and service careers, which sympathetically reveals their personalities (sometimes with pungent humour) makes a story which can be read as the dual biog raphi es o f men who appe ar as dest ined for explosive fusion. The events of that sultry summer afternoon....make fascinating reading for anyone interested in the sea,and in men's behaviour in crisis." Some light browning nad light wavine ss on endpa pers, faint tiny foxin g mark s on t op of text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear, tiny chips and small tears - some archivally taped, minor soiling on rear panel. Very Good/Very Good-

345 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "Brave, tough, resourceful, and, rarest of all, blessed with an irreverent sense of humour, (Major-General Lewis) MacKenzie needed all those qualities for the biggest assignment of his military career: striving for peace among the warring factions in the former Yugoslavia. In this riveting memoir, MacKenzie describes how he created Sector Sarajevo, and with a 30-nation UN force set out to liberate the airport to receive desperately needed food and medical supplies. MacKenzie's outstanding and unorthodox leadership catapulted him to the status of an international celebrity, as he used the media - 'the only weapon I had' - to maximum advantage. Against the daily drama of shelling, sabotage, murder and shameless propaganda, motivated by ethnic hatreds, MacKenzie's adventures in Sarajevo read like a war novel - except that it is all tragically true. With the verve of a natural storyteller, (he) also recounts the often bizarre highlights of eight previous peacekeeping tours in the Middle East, Cyprus and Vietnam. From bluffing his way through the Turkish-Cypriot lines to boisterous forays into Saigon's netherworld; from basketball in the Gaza Strip to dodging sniper fire in Sarajevo; from daring diplomatic improvisations to bluntly outspoken criticisms of the UN bureaucracy: here is a veteran peackeeper's frank, funny and unforgettable story." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine/front hinge. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, tiny tear and wrinkling at bottom of front hinge/front panel.

Dundurn Press, Toronto, 1985.
82 pp, oblong large 8vo, HC in dust jacket. Map endpapers, eight colour and twenty b&w illustrations. "In June, 1867, Juliana Gatty (a popular Victorian children's author)...married Alexander Ewing, an officer in the Commisariat Department of the army. A few days later, they sailed for Canada, finally arriving in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where Captain Ewing was responsible for provisioning the first battalion of the 22nd (Chershire) Regiment stationed there. Juliana Ewing wrote lively l etters home, telling her family about life in the provincial capital and recounting her trials as she learned to manage a house for the first time. In addition, she kept a diary and a commonplace book and made numerous sketches of Frede r i c t o n a n d i ts environs. Some of these drawings were worked up into watercolours which were sent to her parents and her many brothers and sisters as Christmas and birthday presents. This book...vividly demonstrates the range and quality of M rs . Ew in g 's a rt i st ic gifts. The accompanying text recounts her life before and after her two and a half year stay in Fredericton but deals primarily with her experience in New Brunswick..." Dust jacket has very minor edgewear. 343 pp, 8vo 8 3/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1853670030 B&w maps/battle plans, reproductions. "(A) classic eyewitness account of the Anglo-Zulu War. The author was a man of action and a writer who had remarkable insight into contemporar y attitudes. His account of the first phase of the famous campaign is the only one by a professional journalist, and it includes descriptions of the massacre at Isandlwana and the heroic defence of Rorke's Drift. As Special Correspondent for th e L ondon 'Standard', (he) joined Lord Chelmsford's Centre Column and attached himself to the officers of the Natal Native Contingent. He was the first man across when the column entered Zulu territory on 11 January, and he witnessed the opening s ho t s of the campaign at the storming of Sihayo's Kraal. When Lord Chelmsford set out on reconnaissance from the doomed camp at Islandlwana on the 22nd, Norris-Newman was with him; he gives a vivid and powerful account of the events of that day, c ulm in at ing in the return to the site of the massacre and a night spent camped among the dead. (He) also witnessed the aftermath of Rorke's Drift, later accompanying the Eshowe Relief column. Present at the battle of Gingindhlovu, he was the fir st m an to reach the besieged garrison. Originally published in 1880, (this book) has been the foundation for many subsequent studies of the Zulu campaign and presents the full contemporary record."
