In a breezy and colloquial style the author tells of his experiences in and around Banff, of his political life, experiences in the army during World War I, and his encounters with important visitors in the Canadian Rockies. This is not only a fascinating story, but a valuable record of early days when the Rockies were just beginning to attract attention as a tourist centre for the world." "(The first book) to be devoted exclusively to the Battle of Corunna and to the short campaign which preceded it. Mr Hibbert has made extensive use of the many eye-witness accounts which survive in the form of official despatches, histories, diaries, memoirs and letters. The narra-tive is made the more vivid by the numerous illustrations from contemporary paintings and engravings, and by the five specially prepared maps." OVER TO TUNIS: THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE NORTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN., Marshall, Howard.
15 Marshall, Howard. OVER TO TUNIS: THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE NORTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN.
London Eyre & Spottiswoode 1943 First Edition Hard Cover Good Fair Maps by L. Potter.
168 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers + 14 additional b&w maps. "It was Howard Marshall's job to broadcast the Tunisian campaign to the world. No other eye-witness not an actual protagonist has so complete a knowledge of the facts, and in this book he is able to give what could obviously not be given in a broadcast commentary - a balanced, comprehensive and outspoken account of both the military and political sides. The book opens with the first landings in November, 1942, and the failure of the first bid for Tunis. It then traces the development of the small original landing force into a magnificent army, and moves in a crescendo towards the final pulverising attack. The author analyses the reasons for the Allied success and the lessons to be derived from it. He deals at length with the political situation: the plots and counterplots of French political parties; the appointment and assassination of Darlan; the problems of General Giraud's administration; the whole confused background of intrigue and conspiracy in Algiers. The author also discusses the problems of broadcasting from a theatre of war, and describes the special complications of the work of a radio reporter." 19 Roberts, Frank E. THE AMERICAN FOREIGN LEGION: BLACK SOLDIERS OF THE 93d IN WORLD WAR I.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 2004.
259 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1591147344 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "Still segregated in World War I, the U.S. Army was reluctant to use its 93d Division of black soldiers in combat with its own units and instead assigned the division's three National Guard regiments and one draftee regiment to the French Army. The battlefield successes of these African Americans under the French at the height of the German offensives in 1918 turned white e x p e c t a t i ons of failure upside down. Their bravery and heroism gained the respect of the French and Germans alike and called into question the U.S. Army's policy of racially segregating its divisions. The full story of their accomplishmen ts i s to ld h er e fo r the first time. Written from the perspective of the enlisted men and their white and black officers, this book highlights the combat action of individuals as well as entire units of the 93d. Readers join Company C of the 37 0th I nfa ntr y u nde r hea vy fire as they capture artillery pieces, machine guns, and even a portion of a railroad track to become the first American unit to win the Croix de Guerre. They learn about the extraordinary bravery of Cpl. Freddie Sto wers , t he o nly Afri can Am eric an in the war to be nominated for - and seventy years later posthumously awarded - the Medal of Honor, and others who earned the Distinguished Service Cross and French awards for gallantry in combat. In all, some 3,500 men of t he 9 3d fe ll i n b attle with 591 of them buried in France next to their white comrades, the only equality that the U.S. Army then granted them. Their story of overcoming the odds at a time when most believed blacks performe d poo rly in comb at is told by Fra nk E. Rob erts, who has been researching the subject for years. While acknowledging the many problems encountered by the 93d, he focuses on the many triumphs of these tenacious soldiers as they fought both the enemy and the preju dices of th eir fel low Am erica ns."
