Bearman, Frederick A.; Krivatsy, Nati H.; Mowery, J. Franklin. Foreword by Werner Gundersheimer. Introduction by Anthony Hobson. Photographs by Julie Ainsworth. FINE AND HISTORIC BOOKBINDINGS FROM THE FOLGER SHAKESPEARE LIBRARY. Folger Shakespeare Library / Harry N. Abrams, Washington, DC, 1992, one of 2500 copies. 272 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0810933128. The catalogue of the exhibition. "Among the earliest bindings displayed is one of a volume of the works of Thomas a Kempis, printed in Nuremberg in 1494. A six-link iron chain is attached to the top edge of the book. When printing was still relatively new and books were costly, they were often attached to their shelves by chains. Bookbindings with gilt decoration are also on display, many bearing coats of arms of sovere igns and of noble families. Four books in the present collection were bound for Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I, whose personal Bible - bearing a crimson velvet binding with engraved silver clasps and bosses - i s a lso among the volumes reproduced here. One of the most exquisite bindings is of red velvet decorated with raised silver thread and hundreds of seed pearls forming a floral arrangement. It covers a manuscript in the hand of Esther Inglis, a no te d 1 7th-century calligrapher. Shakespeare is represented by a First Folio bound sometime between 1780 and 1790 - with the original binder's bill included! - as well as by three lavish 20th-century bindings: a jeweled binding by Alberto Sango rsk i o n a 1 926 edition of the 'Songs and Sonnets', a dark blue goatskin binding with inset miniature portraits of Shakespeare surrounded by gold tooling, and a 1901 editon of the 'Sonnets' printed on vellum, hand illuminated, and bound in emerald goa tski n with gilt tooling and leather onlays. (This book) includes more than 150 examples of the binder's craft, each fully annotated by the curatorial staff of the Folger Library." ***A heavy volume, which may require extra postage depending on d estin at ion.* ** Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling. Day, Lewis F. STAINED GLASS. Chapman & Hall (for the Board of Education), London, 1903. 155 pp, 7 3/4" H, flexible dark green cloth-covered boards with gold lettering on spine, gold letterng and black lettering/banding/emblem on front board. Tissue-covered frontispiece plus numerous other b&w illustrations. "The aim of this handbook is to trace, as clearly as possible in a short compass, the historic sequence of stained glass - the development, that is to say, of its design, and the gradual perfection of its technique. It has not been thought necessary to dwell upon the period of its decadence. In choosing my illustrations almost entirely from glass in the Victoria and Albert Museum or from drawings belonging to it, I have deliberately sacrificed the opportunity of making a much showier book; but it seemed to me that i n a handbook for the Museum that was the only right thing to do. It may be the means, too, of drawing attention to the tracings of old English glass made by the late Octavius Hudson, and to the interesting sixteenth-century working drawings for do me stic work in the Art Library." - from the Preface. Front free endpaper has been clipped at top corner, very light staining around edges of endpapers - offset from cloth, slight dust staining on top of text block, minor staing on cloth - inc l ude s p artial cup ring, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge wear, slight wrinkling to cloth on rear board. "Cigarette cards, introduced in the 1870s and immensely popular until the Second World War, provide a richly illustrated history of the period. With real arti stic merit they showed heroes of sport and war; stars of stage, screen and radio; classic cars; and many other images. During their golden age, card, albums and novelties were collected avidly, and these fascinating brand advertisements ar e s t i l l i tems of great interest to many thousands of collectors throughout the world. Many of us will remember the joy of searching in packets for the card to complete the set. This book brings back all the splendours of that time." Interi or - cl ea n an d t ight.
