Arthur, Max. Introduction by Lyn Macdonald. WHEN THIS BLOODY WAR IS OVER: SOLDIERS' SONGS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR. Piatkus, (London, 2001), reprint. 130 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations (contemporary cartoons, drawings, reproductions). "The poignant songs of the First World War still posses a haunting power; and here are the authentic lyrics of the songs - by turns funny, cynical, bawdy, angry, wistful - that the soldiers sang on the march, in the trenches, and in their rare moments of rest. The romantic yearnings of the early stages of the war - epitomised by such songs as 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary', and 'Keep the Home Fires Burning' - later give way to the bitter humour of 'Hanging on the Old Barbed Wire' and 'If the Sergeant Steals Your Rum, Never Mind!'. The soldier who sang these songs with such gusto were asserting ordinary humanity i n t h e f a ce of extraordinary inhumanity. Max Arthur has collected together the lyrics of nearly 100 of the best First World War songs, from Britain and her Australian, Canadian and American allies..." Small slight bump to bottom of spine. Brander, Michael. Musical arrangements by Jimmie Macgregor. SCOTTISH AND BORDER BATTLES AND BALLADS. Seely Service, London, 1975, first edition. 300 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0854221050 Music notation, maps. "....(selects) a number of the better-known (Scottish ballads) and place(s) them in their historical setting. Each ballad is introduced by an account of the events which led to its composition and accompanied by a map of the battle where appropriate. There then follows the words of the ballad and the tune or tunes to which it is sung, arranged by Jimmie Macgregor. To aid the unenlightened Sasse nach, those words which are only used north of the border have been translated. It is hoped that in this way the ballads themselves may become more meaningful to more people and that those who live or travel in Scotland will find the book o f u s e w h en visiting the battlefields which gave birth to so many of the ballads." Collinson, Francis. THE BAGPIPE: THE HISTORY OF A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1975, first edition. 257 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0710079133 B&w illustrations. "....(a) fascinating full-length history of one of the world's most interesting and ancient musical instruments. The story begins in 3000 B.C. with the mouth-blown reed pipes, predecessor to the bagpipe. Mr Collinson looks at the history of this instrument as known in ancient Babylonia and Egypt, through the ancient Grecian Empire and Greece itself, to Rome and thence to Britain. He investigates the application of the bag principle to the mouth-blown pipes in Hellenic Egypt and Rome, and the first appearance of the bagpipe in Great Britain and Ireland in the eleventh or twelfth century. He describes the development of the bagpipe in the Br itish Isles, its rise and gradual waning, leaving the Scottish Highland bagpipe and the Northumbrian pipes as the sole survivors. Having traced its evolution, the book goes on to narrate the fortunes of the 'Great Highland Bagpipe' itself. T h i s i s an account which encompasses the Jacobite risings and Culloden, and the Disarming Act 1747, by which the use of the bagpipe was more or less proscribed. It covers the great music of Pibroch, in the hands of the MacCrimmons and other p ip er s, a n d co ntinues up to modern times. Appendices list the bagpipes of other countries and the materials used in the instrument's manufacture, and there is a comprehensive bibliography." Hugill, Stan. SONGS OF THE SEA: THE TALES AND TUNES OF SAILORS AND SAILING SHIPS. McGraw-Hill, Maidenhead, 1977. 198 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070311382 Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with reproductions, photographs, musical notation. "Life was short, brutal, lonely and joyless for the 'jolly tar', except for strong dr ink, women - and the solace of song. So he sang: short, rhythmic, onomatopoeic chants to time his backbreaking work at capstan and halyard, the famous 'shanties'. Or longer, ribald or forlorn ditties for idle moments, called 'forebitters' a f t e r t h e metal bollards on the fo'c's'lehead. He sang bravura songs when outward bound; yearning, sexier songs for the homeward reach; warning songs of pirates, press gangs, and faithless maidens; and songs of admiration for the likes of su ch s ai lo rs as ' Bold MacCarteney'....And here they are, the authentic words and music of more than a hundred sea songs and chants in half a dozen languages. Some are as old as the mists of time, some as new as the great steel-hulled four-mast ers in th e n itr a te run s of the 1890s....To describe and interpret that history, the book begins with an illustrated look at the sailors' varied machines: ships, brigs, barks, schooners, sloops and so on - and their marvelously complex rigging s. Ther e is a h andy g los sary of terms and vernacular, and many clear explanations of customs and language, from the above-mentioned forebitters to the gruesome 'Nelson's Blood' and the ever-present 'Armstrong's Patent' - the muscle power that ma de ev eryth ing g o. T he sail or's skills, dress, pay, superstitions, drink, food - and loves - are clearly described and pictured. There are anecdotes galore: stories of shanghaiing and mutiny, shipwreck and cannabilism, storms and tropical isle s. Ev ery so ng is transl ate d int o Eng lish (and cleaned up a bit) where necessary, and accompanied by a brief history of its origins and its travels from country to country. But try singing the original words in French or Dutch or even (S wedis h or No rwegian ), if only fo r th eir wo nderfu l rhythms." Keeping, Charles. COCKNEY DING DONG. Kestrel Books / EMI Music Publishing, Harmondsworth / London, 1975. 190 pp, 4to (11" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0722650612 Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with Charles Keepings wonderful drawings of London and Londoners of the past. "Charles Keeping, one of Britain's finest illustrators, was brou ght up in Vauxhall, South London, where a Saturday-night sing song (or 'ding dong', as it was called) was part of the way of life. Over many years, including the height of the Blitz, these sing songs scarcely varied in style or content. Ar m e d w i t h plenty of beer and food, the family gathered in the parlour to sing and dance to their favourite songs, each member of the family being expected to sing the song that 'belonged' to him. Charles Keeping has now brought together and l ov in gl y i ll us tr ated many of these songs. They come from a variety of sources: from Edwardian music hall, from the First World War trenches, from the American dance hall, or, quite simply, from the streets. And they take in a complete range of mo ods , fro m t he sen timental 'My Old Dutch' to the favourite Cockeny dance song, 'Knees Up Mother Brown'. Musical notation, for guitar and piano, and full lyrics are given for each song. But this is a book to treasure as much as to use - Char les Keep in g's deli ght ful illustrations, whether they are portraying characters from the songs or members of the family singing, help to capture a part of Cockney life that is fast disappearing." Previous owner's small stamp on front pasted own; a se ries of tiny hole s fr om t o to bottom on pages 81 to 88 - also a small area of creases on these pages and an area of ink smudging on page 88 - probably caused by printing/maunfacturing process; book lightly cocked; two tiny corner bumps .
