128 pp, 10 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(P)rovides a lively picture of contrasting courtly scenes through the ages. It takes us from the paralysingly formal Court of Queen Anne to the outlandish ostentation of fifty years later when the Prince of Wales's dancing feet twinkled with 30,000 Pounds worth of diamonds attached to his shoe buckles. It conjures up the social butterflies of the Victorian age and a young debutante in the 1920's having difficulty tucking the essential three white feathers into her fashionably bobbed hair style. The fairy tale dresses and gold encrusted uniforms described and illustrated in this book have echoed or defied the fashions of the world right up to the present day. The last debutante to be presented at Court left Buckingham Palace in 1958, but in ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament courtly costume and tradition still linger with us." Spine is slightly twisted, minor toning on pastedowns. Dust jacket has light wear at bottom of front flap-fold, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of rear panel, very soft crease down rear panel.

The State Opening of Parliament brings together the Peers and Judges, the Officers of State and t he Bish ops to hear the Queen's Gracious Speech from the Throne. The annual Garter Ceremony at Windsor is an opportunity to see the Queen and other members of the Royal Family in their blue silk velvet Garter robes, accompanied by the Knights of th e Garte r and the Heralds of the College of Arms. At the Lord Chancellor's Breakfast in October, marking the beginning of the legal year, the most senior Judges wear their splendid black and gold gowns - made of black damask elaborately trimmed wit h gold l ace and handmade gold ornaments - and the High Court Judges their scarlet robes trimmed with ermine, as they process with black-gowned barristers between the House of Lords and Westminster Abbey. London John Murray 2007 0719565375 / 9780719565373 Soft Cover Very Good
416 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "The King, the Kaiser and the Tsar - George V, Wilhelm II and Nicholas II - were close cousins who knew each other as Georgie, Willy and Nicky. Between them they ruled half the world. Their lives had overlapped since childhood, in palaces of unimaginable opulence, surrounded by flattery and political intrigue. They saw themselves as a trade union of kings, standing firm against Socialism, Republicanism and revolution. But behind the friendliness lurked quarrels and, as the First World War loomed, they turned on each other. Ultimately, when Nicholas II begged for exile in the midst of Russia's revolution, his cousins denied him. This compelling tale of privilege, power and political machination explores whether their blunders caused the lead-up to war and the end of autocratic monarchy." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - book is very slightly cocked, spine has light creases and is slightly concave.

SECRETS OF THE GOTHA. PRIVATE LIVES OF THE ROYAL FAMILIES OF EUROPE., Diesbach, Ghislain de. Translated from the French by Margaret Crosland.
11 Diesbach, Ghislain de. Translated from the French by Margaret Crosland. SECRETS OF THE GOTHA. PRIVATE LIVES OF THE ROYAL FAMILIES OF EUROPE.
New York Barnes & Noble. 1993 156619086X / 9781566190862 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
392 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). "For this witty account of the European nobility, (the author) has taken as his inspiration that most illustrious of social registers: the 'Almanch de Gotha', first published in 1764 and still on the shelves of all who look back with nostalgia upon 'that happy period - when the monarchic principle was so firmly anchored in people's minds that it seemed impossible for a country to exist unless there was a sovereign, emperor, king, prince, or grand duke at its head'. The author, himself a scion of a princely family, has inherited a clear perspective of the main thoroughfares of history, and a great knowledge of its byways. He approaches his subject with a light touch, even at times with irreverence - for, in his own words: 'The secrets of the Gotha, whispered to me by the ghosts of long-dead chamberlains, evoke the spirit on an age whose frivolities alone have survived. The inheritance of the duchies of Schleswig or Holstein no longer vexes the world at large; but the fate of the unfortunate Electress of Hanover, shut up for thirty years by her husband for having shown too much enthusiasm for the handsome Koenigsmark, still moves us; and the madness of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the indecorous loves of Queen Isabella of Spain, or the eccentricities of Caroline, Princess of Wales, are more interesting today than the War of the Roses, the continence of Scipio or the virtues of Blanche of Castile. It is by their weaknesses that men are human, and kings cannot escape being men. But though their weaknesses may be the cause of their undoing, it is their humanity that most engages our sympathy today. Bad examples are the easiest to follow ; they are also the most amusing to relate." Dust jacket has slight fading to color and lettering on spine, minor edge wrinkling and minor browning on inside top edge.

BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE IN LOVE: THE PRIVATE PASSIONS OF PRINCE CHARLES EDWARD STUART., Douglas, Hugh.
12 Douglas, Hugh. BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE IN LOVE: THE PRIVATE PASSIONS OF PRINCE CHARLES EDWARD STUART.
Alan Sutton, Stroud, 1995, first edition.
242 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0750906057 B&w illustrations. "Starting from the inherited tendencies of his unstable mother, this book follows Charles's involvements with women, from the passionate, illicit affair with his cousin, Louise de Montbazon, following his return from the '45, which resulted in a son, and his cruel arrogance when he took a new mistress replacing her, to his rough treatment of Clementine Walkinshaw, who had nursed him in 1746, and w h o s a c rificed herself for him. She came to live with him, and bore him a daughter, the 'bonnie lass of Albany', his comfort when the dynastic marriage he eventually made with the young Princess Louise of Stolberg came apart, leaving him an e ld er ly cu ck ol d. Judged the wild man of Europe as a result of his scandalous behaviour, Charles's boorishness and drunkenness had cost him the stability he craved, and in his later years he was both ill and lonely, turning to his daughter to s ati sfy hi s lo ngi ng for the love that he had so easily cast aside in his earlier stormy relationships. She became the pride of his life, and when he died four years later, it was with the promise that she would be his rightful heir....this tim ely book pro vi des a re -ex amination of the Scottish hero whose flawed character and lack of success in love undoubtedly influenced his relations with the royal courts of Europe and played an important part in his role in the history of Scotl and and Engla nd, p erh aps contr ibut ing as much to the defeat of the Jacobite cause as 'Butcher' Cumberland's musket fire at Culloden." Samll bump at three corners, slight wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top/botto m of spi ne and flap- fold s, m inor r ubbin g. Very Good-/Very Good

Toronto The Champlain Society 1980 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good+
229 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H) - red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine. No. 844 of Twelve Hundred and Fifty Copies of this Volume prnted for the Champlain Society. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John Prince was undoubtedly one of the most colourful individuals to reside in Upper Canada during the half century that preceded Confederation. (The mythology that had grown up around his memory in southwestern Ontario identified him as the product of an illegal marriage between George IV and Maria Anne Fitzherbert.) His eventful career as an attorney, politician, soldier, entrepreneur, and jurist caused him to become a legend in his own lifetime both in Essex County, where he resided at Sandwich from his arrival in 1833 until 1860, and in Sault Ste Marie where he spent the last ten years of his life as Judge of the Algoma District. In the legislature his independence and erratic individualism soon earned him the reputation of a political maverick. Business interests and entrepreneurial instincts attracted him to railway and banking ventures as early as the 1830s. Individualist and eccentric though he was, John Prince was still very much a man of his age." Minor wear at corners.

"(T)he story of a young Anglo-Irish beauty's visit to Delhi for the 1911 Royal Durbar, where a new King, George V, is to be proclaimed Emperor to reinforce the loyalty to the Crown of India's ruling Princes. For a fortnight of relentless ceremony, unheard of extravagance and imposing military spectacle, in the setting of a vast Tented City complete with its own farms, railway, telegraph and post offices, Lilah Wingfield meets many of the most remarkable colonial characters of the day, including some of the foremost Indian Princes, vying to stage the most lavish display to prove their devotion to the Raj. As the tents are dismantled, Lilah travels through India - to the dangerous Khyber Pass on the Afghan border, to Rajasthan, to the gory sites of the Mutiny and to stay with India's only female ruler, the Begum of Bhopal. Her diary shows her deepening awareness of the ambivalence of certain maharajahs towards British Rule even while she is being entertained royally in their lakeside palaces. Her Irish upbringing gives her an instictive feeling for the mixture of their longing for independence and an affection for the mother country." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. 15 Erickson, Carolly. ROYAL PANOPLY: BRIEF LIVES OF THE ENGLISH MONARCHS.
New York St. Martin's Press, New York, 2006. 2006 0312316437 / 9780312316433 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
351 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Colour and b&w plates. "(This book) replaces the stereotypic images with true multifaceted portraits, bringing each of England's rulers to fully fleshed life. Here is the puny Charles I, nervous, tense, and socially awkward; the frail, slight Richard II, melancholic and sad; the homosexual James I with his handsome favorites; the stuttering William II and the stammering George VI. Here also is the choleric, violent William I (William the Conqueror), bred among the chaos of constant warfare in his native Normandy, ceaselessly embattled once he became King of England. The unkingly Henry III, mild and charitable, despised by his barons for his weakness. And the well-meaning, deeply affectionate Queen Anne, whose many children all died before they could reach adulthood and who was so heavy and gout-ridden that she had to be carried to her coronation. Each ruler's life has a unique story, and 'Royal Panoply' tells that story with award-winning historian Carolly Erickson's characteristic blend of scholarly authenticity, engaging prose, and psychological insight. The focus is not merely on the tale of each reign, but on each king's or queen's entire life, for some rulers did not come to the throne until middle age, and had already led full lives before their accession. Here they are in full panoply: feudal warriors, Renaissance icons, Regency dandies, and modern constitutional monarchs, fascinating characters all." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

16 Gelardi, Julia P. FROM SPLENDOR TO REVOLUTION: THE ROMANOV WOMEN, 1847-1928.
New York St. Martin's Press, 2011 0312371152 / 9780312371159 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
482 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "The years between the early 1850s and the late 1920s marked a turbulent and significant era for Russia. During that time the country underwent a massive transformation, taking it from days of grandeur under the tsars to the chaos of revolution and the beginnings of the Soviet Union. At the center of this tumult were four women of the Romanov dynasty. Marie Alexandrovna and Olga Constantinovna were born into the family, Russian grand duchesses at birth. Marie Feodorovna and Marie Pavlovna married into the dynasty: the former born a princess of Denmark, the latter a duchess of the German duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. These Romanov women, distinguished in varying degrees by their beauty and elegance, their wealth and power, savored a life of privilege and unsurpassed luxury. Marie Alexandrovna, Tsar Alexander II's pampered daughter, astonished her mother-in-law, Queen Victoria, with her strength of character. Thrust into the role of queen at age sixteen, Olga Constaninovna's altruistic streak benefited Greeks and Russians alike. Charming and vivacious, Marie Feodorovna, the mother of the ill-fated Tsar Nicholas II, excelled in her role as empress. Formidable and ambitious, Marie Pavlovna emerged as a rival to Tsarina Alexandra, Nicholas II's embattled consort. (This book) presents the unforgettable political and personal dramas of these extraordinary women. What began for them as a time of splendor ended after World War I with Russia destroyed by revolution." Small soft bump to top corner of pages 367 to 436, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - two tiny tears at top, one very small corner bump. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, soft crease down front hinge area, light edge wrinkling - maily at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

New York D. Appleton 1885 Hard Cover Very Good- No Jacket
576 pp, 598 pp, 8vo (8" H), olive green cloth with gold lettering and banding on spines, gold crest on front boards. These two volumes form the second part of 'The Greville Memoirs' which began with the reigns of George IV and William IV, but are complete in themselves, being numbered Vol. I and Vol. II. "(T)he present publication embraces a period of fourteen years, extending from the accession of Her Majesty Queen Victoria in 1837 to the coup d'etat of Napoleon III in 1851. The occurrences which took place after the close of 1851, the subsequent establishment of the Imperial power in France, the formation of the Cabinet of Lord Aberdeen, followed in 1853 by the Crimean War, mark an important epoch in the history of this country and Europe. I have therefore thought that this date is the appropriate conclusion of this portion of the work. Mr. Greville continued his Journal for nine years more, until the close of 1860, though in his later years he was less conversant with public affairs than he had been in the more active period of his life." This study, written by a very near relation, in collaboration with a well-known English author, shows the King as he really is, in public and in private life; it shows what his aims are, and how he h a s t r i e d to carry them out; and explains the present difficulties in Spain and the collapse of the monarchy. The authors, in writing this book, have had privileges and sources of information which have been given to no one else, and they h av e ha d p er so na l experience of the revolution. It is, therefore, essentially an authoritative work, as well as being immensely interesting both from the historic and the human points of view."
