ISBN 087451374X "Here the story (of the Indian Mutiny) is seen through the eyes of a small group of young British lieutenants gong through t hat stirring set of battles. It is a study of the psychosociological tensions that affected these young people - a group of intelligent and able men who were only partially in control of their destinies, yet had the ambitions, the achievem e n t m o t i v ation, possibly the group skills and personal innovation, to strive and struggle through the dramatic events they experienced. We will come to learn a good deal about these four men (and the mother of one of them) - to see their fr us tr at i on s, t he ir loneliness, their anomie, their failures. At the same time their enthusiasms, their successes, their hopes and dreams, come through constantly, giving a poignancy to their story that transcends the 'facts' themselves. Th e s tuf f o f thi s s tud y i s a n extensive series of letters from the lieutnants back to their families during the height of the hostilities....this book also draws on an intriguing new method of study whose name is content anlaysis. A particula r br anch of th is c onte nt a nlay sis field is explored here - the use of the computer to analyze the content of particular texts. All the letters....have been entered into a computer and treated to a sophisticated content anaysis program that c onsid ers t hem alo ng ni nety- seven sepa rate psychosociological paramters. The resulting glimpses further help to explain some of the critical differences hinted at in the texts themselves....This fresh view of historical method is elaborated in dat a in t he A ppen dixes. Cassidy, Martin. Foreword by Brigadier W.J. Hiles. THE INNISKILLING DIARIES 1899-1903. 1st BATTALION, 27th ROYAL INNISKILLING FUSILIERS IN SOUTH AFRICA. Leo Cooper, Barnsley, 2001, first edition. 252 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850528240 B&w plates, maps. "One hundred years ago, the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, along with many other British regiments, were fighting a desperate campaign many thousands of mi les from their native land. The Second Boer War tested the resolve and resources of what was then the mightiest Empire in the world. A succession of reverses raised the real spectre of defeat at the hands of the Boers; an unthinkable humil i a t i o n . The depth of public interest and concern felt at the time is reflected in continual fascination in this conflict. Thus Martin Cassidy's careful editing of the graphic diaries of three members of the Regiment's 1st Battalion (two off ic er s an d on e p rivate soldier) is to be greatly welcomed. Through the differing angles of these fine accounts we witness not just the drama of battle but the harsh conditions that the British troops had to endure. To read first-hand records o f t he ex tra or din ar y deeds such as those performed at Inniskilling Hill and the Relief of Ladysmith is a privilege that will mean much to those closely associated with the Regiment and to all with an interest in military history." Castle, H.G. Artwork by Edward Mortelmans. SPION KOP. THE SECOND BOER WAR. Almark, London, 1976. 48 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 0855242515 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions, 16 pages of color uniform studies. "In January 1900, an army of 30,000 well armed, well disciplined British troops, under the command of Sir Redvers Buller, VC, moved through Natal to the relief of besieged Ladysmith. Their way was blocked by about 10,000 Boers occupying the heights above the Tugela River which included the 1,470 ft Spion Kop. A seemingly successful night attack by the British turned into trage dy in the morning when it was discovered that they had occupied a plateau below the summit of Spion Kop and were at the mercy of Boer marksmen and artillery from three sides....the British were slaughtered in their hundreds. Incompetence, a n d e v en cowardice, on the part of the British generals, and a breakdown in communications, made Spion Kop one of the most humiliating defeats suffered by a Victorian army. The ordinary soldiers and regimental officers showed stoical bravery a s th ey su ff ered in their exposed positions. When night fell, they evacuated the position, having suffered nearly 1,500 casualties. The Boers lost only one tenth of that number. Although the South African War was eventually won, the failure of t he Bri t ish co m manders at Spion Kop led to far-reaching reforms in the British army and years of accusations and self-justification in the newspapers...." Farwell, Byron. MR. KIPLING'S ARMY. W.W. Norton, New York, 1981, book club edition. 256 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "This is an upstairs-downstairs view of the Victorian-Edwardian army, one of the world's most peculiar fighting forces. The battles it fought are household words, but the idios yncracies and eccentricities of its soldiers and the often appalling conditions under which they lived have gone largely unrecorded. This book explores the lives of officers and men, their foibles, follies, and gallantry, their diversions, fo o d a n d drink, and women, their discipline and their rewards. Brave, glorious, and outrageous, they took their fun where they found it. Full of 'beef, beer, and lust', the common soldier inhabitated a separate world from his upper-class office rs . Ba rr ac ks and officers' mess were united only by their common loyalty to their regiments, and their regiments were as quirky as their men. Each regiment prided itself on its uniqueness; each was different in character and uniform from any ot her . So me eve n had their own marching pace. The author....spent fifteen years gathering material for this work, and he writes with appreciation and affection for this peculiar army and its soldiers." Fleming, Peter. THE SIEGE AT PEKING. Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1959, first edition. 273 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Photographs, maps, plans, reproductions. "Although they had been reported massacred, the Legations (British, French, American, Japanese, etc.) were still holding out (as of 5 July 1900 when Lord S aisbury reported to Queen Victoria). Their small polyglot garrison, supplemented by armed volunteers, had to contend not merely with the fanatical Boxers but with the Imperial Chinese Army. In the history of warfare there has been no strange r s i e g e. Cooped up behind their improvised barricades (many of the sandbags were made of silk), tortured by heat and flies, sustained by strictly rationed pony-meat and unlimited champagne, heartened by delusions of impending relief, somehow t he Le ga ti on s withstood the daily and nightly onslaughts...Mr Fleming's detailed study is based partly on important new evidence." "There has never been a company like the East India Company: it ruled over nearly one-fifth of the world's population, possessed its own army and navy, its own c ivil service, and even its own church. It became the greatest military power in Asia and had a revenue larger than that of Great Britain itself. This is the story of the London merchants who, in their persistent and dogged quest for trade wi t h t h e East, struggled with misunderstanding and suspicion, rivalry with the French and the collapse of the authority of the Indian emperors. The Company brought the brilliant military conquests of men like Robert Dlive and Warren Hastings, an d th e a cq ui sitions of Sir Stamford Raffles and men who spent their entire careers in its service. There were the conquests of the Wellesleys, the intrigues and battles for power with the British government, the prejudice and envy inspired by t he re tu rn hom e o f wealthy retired employees, and the compromise which ended in the appointment of government selected Governors-General. The story of the East India Company is one of adventure, triumph and disaster, pride and loyalty, that spa ns more th an two hund red years of British history: it is also the story of the foundation of the British Empire in India." Gibbs, Peter. CRIMEAN BLUNDER: THE STORY OF WAR WITH RUSSIA A HUNDRED YEARS AGO. Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1960, first American edition. 297 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The Crimean War was a little war, a seemingly unimportant war which England entered - as Trevelyan wrote - for no better reason than that she was bored with pe ace. When, in 1854, the London crowds saw their soldiers marching off to fight, they cheered with delight. The war against Russia, into which Britain and France had drifted in alliance with Turkey - and which had grown out of a petty quarrel b e t w e en some monks in Jerusalem - was to be a lighthearted and glorious adventure. True, the Crimean was a war to capture only one town. Nonetheless the suffering was appalling and 300,000 lives were lost. It was in the Crimean War that the te le gr ap h was first used to apprise statemen at home of events at the front. It was then that Florence Nightingale, horrified by the unnecessary waste of life and by the inhumanity of the treatment of the troops, organized the nursing service t hat wa s t o m ak e history. It was, in fact, Crimea that finally ended the myth that war had glamor. In (this book, the author) tells the full story of this strange conflict, how the errors and blunders and optimism on the part of Palmerston a nd Que en V icto ria, Lo uis Napoleon and Tsar Nicholas developed into a nightmare. Here is the story of the fantastic, gallant and infamous Charge of the Light Brigade, but here also is the unforgettable drama of the ordinary soldier - British, Fre nch, Russi an an d Tur kish - who fought steadfastly on, though sacrificed again and again by the stupidity of his commanders."
