"Thomas Turner's diary covers a little over eleve n years in the life of a man who kept a shop in the Sussex village of East Hoathly - a village some seven miles north-east of Lewes....When the first surviving volume of the diary begins in February 1754 Turner was a newly married twenty-four-yea r - o ld recently arrived in the village. When he stopped writing his diary in 1765 he was thirty-five and one of the pillars of the community. His bride of eleven years before was dead and so was their only child. He had come through times of wo rr y an d depression to acquire maturity and a modest status - and he was about to embark on a fruitful second marriage...." Tiny liquid mark on top of text block. The Reverend James Woodforde began his diary simply to keep a record of expenses, but, "Luckily at an early point he decided to expand the text beyond mere expenditure to cover his doi n g s , his regrets, his feelings both waspish and fond about the people he encountered, the social events that opened up in him a vein of generous pleasure or fury, the almost daily card games he lost or won, his casual preaching and praying amid n on e to o large a congregation at his lonely church, his dark fancies at night, the illnesses with scant hope of cure in ice-cold rooms, the hunts and the shoots and the fishing, the tangles with servants, and the irritations with such close relativ es as hi s niece Nancy who kept him company and his nephew Bill who had his eye on the maids..." A wonderful insight into eighteenth-century daily life in a handsome volume. Slipcase has a few tiny and small light soiling marks - mainly on one si de pan el. Fine/Very Good
