Batten, Jean. Drawings by L.R. Williams. Foreword by J.M. Ramsden. Dust jacket art by Lynn Williams. ALONE IN THE SKY. Airlife, Shrewsbury, 1979, first edition. 190 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0906393019 B&w photographs, drawings. "Jean Batten is one of the great names in aviation history. She was born in New Zealand in 1909, a few weeks after Louis Bleriot flew the English Channel, and qualified for a flying licence at the London Aero Club in 1930. (This book) tells the story of (her) early life and of all her famous flights. The vivid descriptions of these flights, made nearly 50 years ago, highlight the hardships and dangers faced by the early aviators. Quite alone she flew immense distances in record times and in the most basic of aeroplanes. Not only did her flights create time records, but they also blazed the trail for the modern airline routes. The book is based on her earlier work 'My Life' 1938, but thoroughly revised and lengthened by the author without losing its period feel. Now, to a new generation of readers, used to sophisticated jet travel, her achievements will seem incredible. (A) gripping story of skill and courage written by one of the last great pioneer aviatiors." Brimson, Samuel. THE AIRLINES OF THE WORLD. Dreamweaver, Sydney, 1985. 256 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 094982500X Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs. "This is the story of commercial aviation - of the individual airlines which grew out of humble beginnings into the corpora te giants they are today. It is also the story of people. People such as Paterson, Six, Boeing, Fysh, Trippe, Hanshue, Plesman, Rickenbacker, Hughes, Frye and many other who pioneered commercial aviation and went on to found some of the gre a t e s t a irlines in the world. The names of Boeing, Douglas, Lockhhed, Fokker, etc., are synonymous with flying today; but what of other pioneers, of companies which have ceased to exist or have gone out of aircraft building? Here the stories of d eH av il l an d, Handley Page, Convair, Vickers, Stinson, Junkers, Airspeed, Avro, Bristol, Hawker Siddeley, as well as many smaller companies, are told in the context of the airlines that flew their products. With airline operations so confu sed an d d epr ess ed to day, this book looks back on their illustrious histories - at the efforts of people who made them grow, at the attempts to halt that growth, at the transition from air travel in splendid comfort only for the wealthy to tod ay's 747 s, D C10s and L1 011s which pack in the low-fare-paying passengers like sardines. All in all, (this) is a fascinating chronicle of the world of commercial aviation from its very beginnings until the present." Davies, R.E.G. Illustrated by Mike Machat. PAN AM: AN AIRLINE AND ITS AIRCRAFT. Orion, New York, 1987, first edition. 90 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 11 1/4" D) hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0517566397 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, black, white & red maps, black, white, silver & blue profiles. "This unique book chronicles the history of what many aviat ion enthusiasts believe to be the world's greatest airline - Pan American. From its modest beginnings in 1927, when Juan Trippe obtained an exclusive contract to fly the mail on the 90-mile flight between Key West and Havana, the airline has gro w n to encompass the entire globe, always pioneering new routes, experimenting with the newest and best aircraft available, accumulating valuable experience in long-distance navigation and weather forecasting. With Charles Lindbergh as technical a dv is e r, Pan American set as its first objective the development of air routes throughout the Caribbean and South America. This was achieved by a heady mixture of technical brilliance and political intrigue. During the 1930s air service was exte nde d t o the South Pacific and the Far East when Pan Am introduced the 'China Clippers', the famous Sikorsky and Martin flying boats that were the first American commercial aircraft able to make long ocean crossings. In 1937 Pan Am adopted the rem arka ble DC -3s, and air transport was rapidly accepted by the public as safe and reliable. The strategy behind this book is unusual. Instead of a conventional narrative history, (the author) has chosen to present the growth of Pan American in dis crete sec tio ns, each organized around the acquisition of a new airplane or the expansion of its air routes. In addition to documenting the growth of an airline, the book re-creates the step-by-step growth of commercial aviation technology, from the ea rly F okke rs and Ford Tri-Motors to today's giant Boeing, Douglas, and Lockheed turbojets, as shown shown in Mike Machat's masterful and painstakingly accurate illustrations." Henshaw, Alex. THE FLIGHT OF THE MEW GULL. John Murray, London, 1980, first edition. 310 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0719537401 B&w photographs, maps, drawings. "(Alex Henshaw) had the luck to grow up in the '20s and '30s during the golden age of flying and thanks to his father's generous encouragement it was not long before he had his own Gipsy Moth. From that moment there was no looking back. The Blue Riband of flying in the British Isles between the two World Wars was the King's Cup: Henshaw set his heart on it, developing a technique of racing which extracted the very maximum from his aircraft: first the Comper Swift and then the DH Leopard Moth. Parallel with his search for speed was an obsession with making accurate landfalls, and he developed this blind-flying talent deliberately in a flying partnership with his father on many carefully planned long-distance survey flights. His exciting apprenticeship in these two skills was crowned by the acquisition of the Percival Mew Gull G-AEXF in 1937. After many initial successes with t he machine Henshaw became associated with Jack Cross of Essex Aero Ltd at Gravesend who became primarily responsible for the racing and long distance preparations. First fruits of this partnerships was victory in the King's Cup of 1938 at a speed t hat was the fastest of any winning aircraft at any time. This was closely followed by an amazing solo flight to Cape Town and back in February 1939 establishing several solo records that still stand today, over forty years later. This feat of n avi gation and airmanship must surely be one of man's greatest flights - 12,754 miles over desert, sea and jungle in a single-engined light aircraft. Alex Henshaw tells his story in a vivid style that puts you at the heart of all his battles and ad vent ures." Small light bump at top of rear hinge, slight waviness to edges of text block. Holden, Henry M. THE BOEING 247: THE FIRST MODERN COMMERCIAL AIRPLANE. THE FLYING CLASSICS SERIES. TAB / McGraw-Hill, Blue Ridge Summit, PA, 1991, first edition. 168 pp, 9 3/16" H, soft cover. ISBN 0830635939 B&w photographs, drawings. "The introduction of the Boeing 247 in 1933 is widely regarded as the beginning of modern air transport. With an all-metal, stressed-skin design and a cruising speed of 17 0 miles an hour, the 247 marked the end of the slower, flimsy wood-and-dope frame biplanes used by the military and mail service. Though quickly overshadowed by its competitors, the 247 proved to the American public that commercial air travel c o u l d be both safe and efficient. In fact, this innovative airplane determined the direction of aircraft design for nearly the next two decades. (This books) traces the evolution of the 247, describing the technological and social circumstanc es d ur in g and after World War I that led to its development. You'll find fascinating descriptions of William Boeing's struggle to implement his unique designs, the public's reception of the 247, the aircraft's commercial and military uses, and the 24 7's ul ti mate impact on aviation." Hotson, Fred W. THE BREMEN. CANAV, Toronto, Ontario, 1988, first edition. 224 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0921022026 B&w photographs, maps. "The flight of the German airplane 'Bremen' from Europe to North America in 1928 was one of the milestones of aviation history. No one had flown the Atlantic in that direction and the risks were high - seven people had died in the attempt. When two Germans and an Irishman left Ireland in the 'Bremen' for New York, there were predictions of a similar fate, and when nothing was heard after 40 hou rs, the newspapers began preparing obituaries for the gallant crew. Suddenly a message was relayed from a remote Canadian radio station: the aircraft has force-landed on an ice-bound island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence....and the race was on t o r e a c h the stranded flyers. The 'Bremen' story is an exciting drama of courage, humour and tragedy. All sorts of people found themselves drawn to the event, from the lighthouse keeper and his family, who watched in amazement as the aircra f t la n de d al mo st at their front door, to presidents and prime ministers. There were the bush pilots who were first to reach the flyers, the mechanics who tried to repair the 'Bremen', ruthless reporters competing for a scoop, and Lindbergh ma ki ng a me rcy f lig ht in an attempt to save the life of pilot Floyd Bennett. Small wonder an enthusiastic journalist of those aviation-mad day called the 'Bremen' episode, 'the greatest news story of all time'." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom o f s pin e.
