THE YOUNG ARDIZZONE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL FRAGMENT., Ardizzone, Edward.
4 Ardizzone, Edward. THE YOUNG ARDIZZONE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL FRAGMENT.
London Studio Vista 1970 289797721 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Edward Ardizzone.
144 pp, 10" H. "The story (Ardizzone) tells here is of his own childhood up to the time he started his career as an artist. Evoking a period as well as having a lot of fun remembering, it is fragmentary, charming and very much alive, sometimes because a particular character, escapade or adventure is sharply etched in his memory, sometimes, on the contrary, because the edges are blurred and the episode or person half-forgotten. Like his children's books, there are illustrations on every page, half of them in colour and half in black and white. Many of these drawings (which were all made specially for this book) are among his best work and together with the text they make up a unique 'autobiograpical fragment' - a kind of children's book for grown ups, which the publishers think that a great many children will also enjoy if their parents allow them to read it." Edward Ardizzone "is probably best-known and most-loved for the Tim and Lucy books which he wrote himself as well as illustrated." Bump at top of rear hinge, very light lean to spine. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top of spine and at top edge of front panel, light toning to spine and top of front panel - very light toning elsewhere, light wrinkling at bottom of spine and top/bottom of flap-folds.

Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." Dust jacket has tiny wrinkles at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few slight wrinkles on front flap

New York Harper & Brothers 1958 Hard Cover Very Good Good Ludwig Bemelmans.

Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations throughout text, plus tipped-in colour frontispiece and one other, followed by colour plates. Ludwig Bemelmans was famous for his 'Madeline' books. "A book to delight the spirit as well as the eye, 'My Life in Art' begins with the delectable world of Mr. Bemelmans' childhood on the shore of the Traunsee in Austria. The artist then recounts his misadventures in Paris where, painting meanwhile, he attempts to turn a ramshackle bistro into a smart cafe with the help of a famous restauranteur and a few clochards. It is in Ville d'Avray, in an old ruin converted into a studio, that (he) suffers the initial despairs and frustrations of painting with oils. His success in the medium is attested to by the many color reproductions in this book. The text, with its accompanying drawings, is 'about how and why and where they were painted,' says Mr. Bemelmans." 18 Bruni, Stephen T. / Wyeth, Betsy James / Wolff, Theodore F. / Crosman, Christopher. Foreword: David Michaelis. Introduction: Susan C. Larsen. WONDROUS STRANGE: THE WYETH TRADITION - HOWARD PYLE, N.C. WYETH, ANDREW WYETH, JAMES WYETH.
Boston Bulfinch Press 1998 0821225375 / 9780821225370 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good- Howad Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, James Wyeth.
168 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). "Swashbuckling, romantic, mysterious, fantastical - all these words can be used to describe the art in this splendid book of 'wondrous strange' paintings by four great American artists. Conceived and entitled by Betsy James Wyeth, (it) focuses on an aspect of American realism that stems from the great turn-of-the-century illustrator Howard Pyle and continues in the work of his student N.C. Wyeth, N.C.'s son Andrew Wyeth, and his grandson Jamie Wyeth. The thread that links the four artists is an imaginative, often disquieting, dreamlike imagery - 'the incarnation of the fantastic in everyday reality'. The colourful paintings - thirty by each artist - are brimming with madness, mystery, high emotion, and drama. As Susan Larsen notes in the introduction, this book 'is full of literary flights of fancy, exotic adventures, spiritual journeys, romantic encounters, and children's fables played out on the stage of ordinary life'. Other insightful essays examine the relationships among Pyle and the Wyeths, suggesting how illustration and the fine arts intersect in their work. (This) is an enchanting collection of art by America's most famous family of artists." Small bump at bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has come light edge wrinkling, light fading to spine and front hinge color.
