9 Beetles, Chris. With contributions from Rodney Dale and David Wootton. LOUIS WAIN'S CATS.
Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." Dust jacket has tiny wrinkles at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few slight wrinkles on front flap

Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations throughout text, plus tipped-in colour frontispiece and one other, followed by colour plates. Ludwig Bemelmans was famous for his 'Madeline' books. "A book to delight the spirit as well as the eye, 'My Life in Art' begins with the delectable world of Mr. Bemelmans' childhood on the shore of the Traunsee in Austria. The artist then recounts his misadventures in Paris where, painting meanwhile, he attempts to turn a ramshackle bistro into a smart cafe with the help of a famous restauranteur and a few clochards. It is in Ville d'Avray, in an old ruin converted into a studio, that (he) suffers the initial despairs and frustrations of painting with oils. His success in the medium is attested to by the many color reproductions in this book. The text, with its accompanying drawings, is 'about how and why and where they were painted,' says Mr. Bemelmans." 14 Bruni, Stephen T. / Wyeth, Betsy James / Wolff, Theodore F. / Crosman, Christopher. Foreword: David Michaelis. Introduction: Susan C. Larsen. WONDROUS STRANGE: THE WYETH TRADITION - HOWARD PYLE, N.C. WYETH, ANDREW WYETH, JAMES WYETH.
Boston Bulfinch Press 1998 0821225375 / 9780821225370 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good- Howad Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, James Wyeth.
168 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). "Swashbuckling, romantic, mysterious, fantastical - all these words can be used to describe the art in this splendid book of 'wondrous strange' paintings by four great American artists. Conceived and entitled by Betsy James Wyeth, (it) focuses on an aspect of American realism that stems from the great turn-of-the-century illustrator Howard Pyle and continues in the work of his student N.C. Wyeth, N.C.'s son Andrew Wyeth, and his grandson Jamie Wyeth. The thread that links the four artists is an imaginative, often disquieting, dreamlike imagery - 'the incarnation of the fantastic in everyday reality'. The colourful paintings - thirty by each artist - are brimming with madness, mystery, high emotion, and drama. As Susan Larsen notes in the introduction, this book 'is full of literary flights of fancy, exotic adventures, spiritual journeys, romantic encounters, and children's fables played out on the stage of ordinary life'. Other insightful essays examine the relationships among Pyle and the Wyeths, suggesting how illustration and the fine arts intersect in their work. (This) is an enchanting collection of art by America's most famous family of artists." Small bump at bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has come light edge wrinkling, light fading to spine and front hinge color.

18 Crane, Walter. OF THE DECORATIVE ILLUSTRATION OF BOOKS OLD AND NEW.
London Bracken 1984 0946495416 / 9780946495412 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
243 pp, 8vo (8" H). B&w illustrations. "Originally published in 1896, this survey of book illustration is both a comprehensive guide to many facets of early work in the field and important evidence of Victorian taste and the influences which shaped it. Walter Crane, as a leading designer and illustrator, was exceptionally well placed to survey the subject - indeed, some of the finest pieces among over 100 drawings reproduced here are those by Crane himself. Crane begins by describing the artist's role in producing manuscripts and early printed books up to the end of the sixteenth century, giving an account of Italian, French and (particularly) German work. He then moves to the beginning of 'modern illustration', which he dates from the work of Blake, and takes in most of the major Victorian exponents of the art, with examples from such men as Rossetti, Selwyn Image, Arthur Hughes, Laurence Housman, Howard Pyle and Will H. Bradley. The result is a book which has delighted the collector for many years, and is now in increasing demand among art historians and typographers." Faint erased pencil mark on front free endpaper, light browning in margins of pages and to edges of text block, light wrinkling at fore-edge of pages 32 to 44 with two very small tears on fore-edge of pages 37 to 40 that are archivally taped. 19 Davies, Russell. (Ronald Searle.) RONALD SEARLE: A BIOGRAPHY.
London Sinclair-Stevenson 1990 1856190048 / 9781856190046 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Ronald Searle.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Born in 1920 in Cambridge, (Ronald Searle) became a regular contributor to the Cambridge Daily News in 1935, financed his own night-school studies in drawing and won an art-school scholarship. The war shattered the university-town idyll. In 1942 Searle was captured by the Japanese at Singapore and later put to work on the terrible 'Death Railway' from Siam to Burma. His remarkable eye-witness drawings, achieved with very scant materials, constitute a uniquely important documentary record of the horrors of those times. The post-war years found him in London. As creator of St Trinian's and delineator of Nigel Molesworth, he was a feted London celebrity in the Fifties. His tremendous appetite for work did not, however, save him from involvement in some peculiar situations. Searle's participation in the 1956 Suez Affair, detailed here for the first time, is one of the book's many surprises. In 1961, (he) abandoned the life he had built, moved to France and started again. Living with his second wife in a remote village in Haute-Provence, he has continued to delight and disturb the world with a stream of images that mocks with the best intentions: to make people laugh, and to entice them, through their laughter, to share his own critical vision of the world. Ronald Searle allowed Russell Davies special access to his archive, and has approved the selection of his work that helps to tell his story." 1" split in cloth at bottom of front hinge, very small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge.

Tasha Tudor is the illustrator, author, or subject of more than ninety books, including 'The Secret Garden', one of the bestselling children's books of all time. She has left an indelible print on the traditions and celebrations of devoted fans all over the world. This is the definitve look at how Tasha Tudor's life has created her art, how her art has shaped her life, and why it is essential to view them together to best appreciate her gracious legacy. Davis provides detailed biographical information, everything from the origin of Tasha's name to how she raised four children on her own, in order to illustrate the amazing connection between her life and work.
