5 Beetles, Chris. With contributions from Rodney Dale and David Wootton. LOUIS WAIN'S CATS.
Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." Dust jacket has tiny wrinkles at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few slight wrinkles on front flap

MY LIFE IN ART., Bemelmans, Ludwig.
6 Bemelmans, Ludwig. MY LIFE IN ART.
New York Harper & Brothers 1958 Hard Cover Very Good Good Ludwig Bemelmans.

Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations throughout text, plus tipped-in colour frontispiece and one other, followed by colour plates. Ludwig Bemelmans was famous for his 'Madeline' books. "A book to delight the spirit as well as the eye, 'My Life in Art' begins with the delectable world of Mr. Bemelmans' childhood on the shore of the Traunsee in Austria. The artist then recounts his misadventures in Paris where, painting meanwhile, he attempts to turn a ramshackle bistro into a smart cafe with the help of a famous restauranteur and a few clochards. It is in Ville d'Avray, in an old ruin converted into a studio, that (he) suffers the initial despairs and frustrations of painting with oils. His success in the medium is attested to by the many color reproductions in this book. The text, with its accompanying drawings, is 'about how and why and where they were painted,' says Mr. Bemelmans." 8 Bromer, Anne C. & Edison, Julian I. Foreword by Stanley Marcus. Preface by Eric Holzenberg. MINIATURE BOOKS: 4,000 YEARS OF TINY TREASURES.
New York Abrams 2007 081099299X / 9780810992993 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
216 pp, small 4to (10 3/4" H). Copper-coloured edges to textblock, integral ribbon bookmark. Profusely illustrated in colour throughout. This book was published to accompany an exhibition by the Grolier Club. "The variety of subjects that appear between these tiny covers is as diverse as that found in full-size books. Why would the world's literature, art, and history be published in miniature? Portability and accessibility are certainly two answers, but there are also compelling reasons for printers, artists, and binders to create intriguing volumes in a scaled-down size, and for collectors to possess these intricate and aesthetically pleasing objects. This is the first lavishly illustrated, authoritative volume on the delightful subject of books no taller than three inches. Its dazzling array is shown - with few exceptions - at actual size. Here is the prayer book that Anne Boleyn carried to her execution, seen open to its sole illustration, a portrait of Henry VIII. Here also are the world's two smallest books (impossible to be sure which is tinier). There are books studded with gemstones, books that Napoleon carried with him on his campaigns, books illustrated by artists such as Picasso, Miro, and Edward Gorey. One section deals with the papers, printing, and binding used in these tiny marvels. Filled with great stories and fascinating people, 'Miniature Books' speaks not only to the experienced collector, but also to the one just starting out and to anyone who loves the look and feel of a good book." Previous owner's embossed blind stamp, small chop mark (stamp) and small pen notation at bottom of half-title page, tiny bump at top corner of boards, small line indentation on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinling, very minor edge wear.

9 Bruni, Stephen T. / Wyeth, Betsy James / Wolff, Theodore F. / Crosman, Christopher. Foreword: David Michaelis. Introduction: Susan C. Larsen. WONDROUS STRANGE: THE WYETH TRADITION - HOWARD PYLE, N.C. WYETH, ANDREW WYETH, JAMES WYETH.
Boston Bulfinch Press 1998 0821225375 / 9780821225370 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good- Howad Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, James Wyeth.
168 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). "Swashbuckling, romantic, mysterious, fantastical - all these words can be used to describe the art in this splendid book of 'wondrous strange' paintings by four great American artists. Conceived and entitled by Betsy James Wyeth, (it) focuses on an aspect of American realism that stems from the great turn-of-the-century illustrator Howard Pyle and continues in the work of his student N.C. Wyeth, N.C.'s son Andrew Wyeth, and his grandson Jamie Wyeth. The thread that links the four artists is an imaginative, often disquieting, dreamlike imagery - 'the incarnation of the fantastic in everyday reality'. The colourful paintings - thirty by each artist - are brimming with madness, mystery, high emotion, and drama. As Susan Larsen notes in the introduction, this book 'is full of literary flights of fancy, exotic adventures, spiritual journeys, romantic encounters, and children's fables played out on the stage of ordinary life'. Other insightful essays examine the relationships among Pyle and the Wyeths, suggesting how illustration and the fine arts intersect in their work. (This) is an enchanting collection of art by America's most famous family of artists." Small bump at bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has come light edge wrinkling, light fading to spine and front hinge color.

12 Crane, Walter. OF THE DECORATIVE ILLUSTRATION OF BOOKS OLD AND NEW.
London Bracken 1984 0946495416 / 9780946495412 Reprint Hard Cover
243 pp, 8vo (8" H). B&w illustrations. "Originally published in 1896, this survey of book illustration is both a comprehensive guide to many facets of early work in the field and important evidence of Victorian taste and the influences which shaped it. Walter Crane, as a leading designer and illustrator, was exceptionally well placed to survey the subject - indeed, some of the finest pieces among over 100 drawings reproduced here are those by Crane himself. Crane begins by describing the artist's role in producing manuscripts and early printed books up to the end of the sixteenth century, giving an account of Italian, French and (particularly) German work. He then moves to the beginning of 'modern illustration', which he dates from the work of Blake, and takes in most of the major Victorian exponents of the art, with examples from such men as Rossetti, Selwyn Image, Arthur Hughes, Laurence Housman, Howard Pyle and Will H. Bradley. The result is a book which has delighted the collector for many years, and is now in increasing demand among art historians and typographers." Light browning in margins of pages and to edges of text block, light wrinkling and two very small tears on fore-edge of pages 37 to 40 (archivally taped). Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

144 pp, 10 13/16" H. Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated in colour and b&w throughout. "From the 1860s to the 1930s there was a great flowering of the illustrator's art in England and America. Artists such as Kate Greenaway, Jessie Willcox Smith, Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, and the Robinson brothers revolutionized the art of children's book illustration during this period. Their carefully conceived and beautifully executed illustrations made children's books appealing to all ages, and today early editions of their works are sold for vast sums. For (this book, the author) has written biographies of more than fifty of the artists whose talents helped to create the Golden Age. He includes not only the great names, but also less well known but equally talented artists such as Harry Clarke, Anne Anderson, Margaret Tarrant, and L. Leslie Brooke. There are more than 150 illustrations - both color plates and black and white drawings - which have been reproduced with painstaking fidelity to the originals. Chosen to be representative of the artists' work, the selection covers the whole spectrum of subject matter and style and makes an evocative and appealing collection of the classic works of children's book illustration." 14 Davies, Russell. (Ronald Searle.) RONALD SEARLE: A BIOGRAPHY.
London Sinclair-Stevenson 1990 1856190048 / 9781856190046 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Ronald Searle.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Born in 1920 in Cambridge, (Ronald Searle) became a regular contributor to the Cambridge Daily News in 1935, financed his own night-school studies in drawing and won an art-school scholarship. The war shattered the university-town idyll. In 1942 Searle was captured by the Japanese at Singapore and later put to work on the terrible 'Death Railway' from Siam to Burma. His remarkable eye-witness drawings, achieved with very scant materials, constitute a uniquely important documentary record of the horrors of those times. The post-war years found him in London. As creator of St Trinian's and delineator of Nigel Molesworth, he was a feted London celebrity in the Fifties. His tremendous appetite for work did not, however, save him from involvement in some peculiar situations. Searle's participation in the 1956 Suez Affair, detailed here for the first time, is one of the book's many surprises. In 1961, (he) abandoned the life he had built, moved to France and started again. Living with his second wife in a remote village in Haute-Provence, he has continued to delight and disturb the world with a stream of images that mocks with the best intentions: to make people laugh, and to entice them, through their laughter, to share his own critical vision of the world. Ronald Searle allowed Russell Davies special access to his archive, and has approved the selection of his work that helps to tell his story." 1" split in cloth at bottom of front hinge, very small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge.

218 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Tomie dePaola is among the best known, best loved artist-authors creating books for children today. His art and his stories, filled with imagination, humor, elegance, and curiosity, emanate from a love of life reflected in everything he does. Barbara Elleman, a critic in her own right, explores Tomie dePaola as artist and storyteller. The result is this fascinating, highly readable account which looks first at dePaola's life, complete with family photographs, and then at the extraordinary scope of his work - autobiographical picture books, folktales, Christmas themes, religious stories, collections, and more. She explores patterns and motifs that thread through his illustrations from the beginning; discusses major influences on his art; gives a rare glimpse at his fine art and his 'non-book' designs; provides an intriguing step-by-step account of the development of a picture book, 'Big Anthony, His Story', from the original draft of the manuscript to finished art. Ms. Elleman's thoughtful narrative brings a fresh appreciation of this unique artist-author. Tomie dePaola's followers and those discovering him for the first time will find this remarkable volume filled with over 200 illustrations a feast for the eye to be looked at again and again." WALTER CRANE AS A BOOK ILLUSTRATOR., Engen, Rodney K.
19 Engen, Rodney K. WALTER CRANE AS A BOOK ILLUSTRATOR.
New York St. Martin's Press 1975 85670170X First American Edition Soft Cover Very Good Walter Crane.
105 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour reproductions. "Walter Crane, artist of Kensington, was a man of many talents, but possibly best known for his original and charmingly executed designs which made him the leading illustrator of children's books of the Aesthetic Movement period. In the face of the commercial vulgarity and ugliness of Victorian industrialised society, he created a delicate and escapist fairy world which, with its emphasis on spontaneity and mobility of line, and its clever use of background and colour, popularised a completely new style of tasteful book designs, and brought them within the reach of everyone. The influence of Crane's work and his highly novel theories of design make him an important figure in nineteenth century art history. (The author) discusses Crane's style and ideas in a study delightfully arranged after Crane's own rules and book design. He includes nearly 100 illustrations, ranging from nursery rhymes and fairytales to tailpieces and borders, mostly full page as Crane designed them, and 16 in the full colour he helped to pioneer. The extensive annotated catalogue is an invaluable aid for both student and specialist." Previous owner's bookplate on half title page. Interior - previous owner's bookplate on half-title page, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor corner wear, small area of delamination at bottom front corner.

20 Evans, Hilary and Evans, Mary. THE LIFE AND ART OF GEORGE CRUIKSHANK 1792-1878.
New York S.G. Phillips 1978 0875992277 / 9780875992273 Hard Cover Very Good Good George Cruikshank
192 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions. "When George Cruikshank died, (over) a hundred years ago, he was admired as an artist, respected as a reformer, loved as a man. But he had lived so long and created so much that few could discern any unity underlying the diverse creations of his seventy-year working life - creations ranging from a thumbnail caricature of Napoleon III ('it never reigns but it bores!') to the four-metres-wide 'Worship of Bacchus' which now hangs, dusty and neglected, in the storerooms of the Tate Gallery. For some he was the artist who showed us Oliver Twist asking for mroe; for some the whimsical delineator of elves and fairies; for others the fanatical reformer who drew 'The Bottle' to convert us all from the Demon Drink. Everything he created was a spontaneous response to the world he saw. It might be something trivial, as when he went on a day-trip to Boulogne - the only time he left English soil! - and memorialized the event in a masterly sketch of seasick travellers (which perhaps explains why the adventure was never repeated). Or it might be on a deeper level, as when he symbolises in 'The Drunkard's Children' all the horrors of modern industrial society. It is his ability to see the world both as it is and as it might be which is the greatness of Cruikshank, both as a man and as an artist, and this book sets out to reveal the continual development of his art as a reflection of his continual development as a man. It therefore takes the form of a running commentary on pictures which are themselves a running commentary on the artist's outward and inward life. From more than two hundred pictures, one of the widest selections of his work ever brought together, Cruickshank emerges, not just as one of the world's greatest illustrators, but as a visionary artist whose work, at first glance so light and casual, reveals a profound sympathy and understanding of human life."
