ISBN 0889025886 Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, drawings, plans. "The post-Expo era of Canadian architecture has produced works of international importance which have been recognized in European, Japanese and American periodicals. Then, concentrating on major cities from coast to coast, they look at proje ct s e mb od yi ng a lternative movements that are suggestive of possible future directions, projects such as: Corridart in Montreal; Robson Square in Vancouver; the Pavilion '70 ski chalet in St. Sauveur, Quebec; Toronto's Eaton Centre; Winnipeg's St . Daniels, Jeffery. Drawings by Leonora Ison. ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND. Weidenfeld & Nicolson (Educational), London, 1968. 128 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 298762102 B&w drawings, floor plans, elevations. "Illustrated with over 70 line drawings and plans, the text spans over 2,000 years of architecture in England. The account begins with a discussion of the villas, camps and roads of Roman Britain, and shows how this heritage slowly decayed, giving way to the Romanesque imported by the conquering Normans. The soaring Gothic of the middle ages yields in its turn to another E u r o p e a n influence, the Renaissance, which acquires its own English character. The Baroque, Pallandian and Neo-Classic movements are then analysed, and the survey is brought right up to date with the industrial and scientific revolutions of t he n in et ee nt h and twentieth centuries, and their effects on techniques and styles. Dominant architectural styles are fully defined and illustrated, and the many examples given will stimulate a study in depth by means of visits to churches, ho use s, cas tle s, mus eu ms and modern streets and office blocks. The special value of this book for the student of architecture is the care taken by the author to illustrate his text at every point, with examples drawn from every field of architec ture - eccl esia sti cal and secular, domestic and institutional." Dunlop, Ian. Foreword by Sir Arthur Bryant. Jacket design by Loudon Sainthill. VERSAILLES. B.T. Batsford, London, 1956, first edition. 240 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions. "How the Palace of Versailles was built, and how the courts of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI lived in it, is the theme of this book. In itself Versailles is one of the most stupendous artistic creations of all time. Ian Dunlop here describes the requirements of the three royal patrons and their courts and the physical means by which the resulting conceptions were realised: the armies of workmen who wer e employed and the obstacles - not least of them disease - which they had to overcome; the work of the architects, painters, cabinetmakers and decorators; the gardeners and the problems, such as the planting of fully-grown trees and the Marly wat e r w orks for the fountains, with which they had to contend. Artificial and undemocratic the life of the courts may have been, but there is no denying the lasting artistic achievements to which Versailles gave birth in the work, for example, of Ma ns ar t, Le Notre, and Gabriel, of Moliere and Rameau, of Boucher, Watteau and Lancret. The book is very fully illustrated by photographs and by reproductions of paintings and portraits by Hubert Robert, Largilliere, Boucher, Van der Meulen, Droua is, Na tti er and Chatelet; by prints after Rigaud, Blondel, Perelle and Cochin; and by the sculpture of Bernini, Houdon and Le Comte. In its illustrations, as in Mr. Dunlop's text, the book provides what is certainly the best general account of V ersa ille s in English." Dust jacket has very l ight edge wear/ wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning on spine and top/bottom edges, a few tiny foxing marks on spine. Very Good/Very Good-

Freeman, John and Dormer, Peter. LONDON REVEALED. THE BEAUTIFUL, BIZARRE AND UNEXPECTED INTERIORS OF THE CAPITAL. Macdonald, London, 1989, first edition. 240 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Beautifully and profusely illustrated with colour photographs. ISBN 0356175375 "John Freeman has spent a year investigating the worlds behind the closed doors of the Capital, unearthing an incredible variety of important interiors. The best and most exciting of these have been brought together in this book, revealing ninety unique views of London, many of which have been photographed here for the first time. The result is the mos t authoritative and well-researched book on the hidden and unappreciated interiors of London, coveirng not only buildings from all periods of history but sites that represent many of the aspects of London life. Five thematic chapters put each indi vi d ual interior into context, making the book not only a stunning visual and descriptive account of the multifarious worlds inside London, but an important survey of London's architecture and design. The chapters include 'The Grand Scale', a stud y o f the most opulent and grand interiors, with unusual angles on the well-known - such as the Albert Hall and Old Bailey - as well as impressive but less accessible sites such as the Granada Cinema at Tooting. 'Into the Twentieth Century' reveals the i nnovative decors - successful or otherwise - of recent years; 'The Decorative Tradition' celebrates the richness of period and contemporary detailing in London; 'Moments Preserved' evokes not only nostalgia but wonders at the perfect preserv ation or restoration of a period room or moment in time (with a plea therefore for their further protection). 'Private Lives' explores the personal homes that have been transformed in traditional and eclectic styles by their owners, and also prov ides g limp ses into private habitats, from the hallowed halls of the Reform Club to a Chelsea houseboat and even a 'taxi driver' eatery." Godfrey, Walter H. A HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE IN AND AROUND LONDON. ARRANGED TO ILLUSTRATE THE COURSE OF ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND UNTIL THE END OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY WITH A LIST OF PRINCIPAL TWENTIETH-CENTURY BUILDINGS. Phoenix House, London, 1962, revised edition. 264 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Over 150 b&w illustrations (drawings and photographs) showing buildings, floor plans, architectural details. "....(studies the architecture of London and) beyond to Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire, a nd elsewhere up to a limit of forty miles to introduce and describe the fine houses, churches, abbeys, palaces, and other buildings deserving of public interest in some of the home counties. It could justly be claimed that no major buildin g o f a r c h itectural merit from Norman to our own time is overlooked, and some of the greater glories of London's stone are the subject of concise yet comprehensive essays, Westminster Abbey, for example, and the peculiarly beautiful Eltham Pal ac e , so su rp ri si ngly situated in what is now one of London's populous suburbs. But Mr Godfrey is far from a mere guide. His book brims with profound knowledge and an engaging enthusiasm. He understands that most of his readers are not vers ed in t he t erm s a nd ref erences of architecture, and these are introduced one by one, and the wonders and excitements of the art of building are revealed in their various beauty. Architectural features and comparative styles, together with pla ns and de tai le d dr awin gs, are included in the 59 text figures, and there are 64 pages of plates containing 104 photographs and rare prints of buildings as they appeared in the past...."
