EVERYONE IN THE BIBLE., Barker, William P.
9 Barker, William P. EVERYONE IN THE BIBLE.
Old Tappan, New Jersey Fleming H. Revell 1966 Book Club Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
370 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Who was Izri, Rinnah, Heli? Are Mica, Micah, Micaiah, and Michaiah the same person or four different people? Where is the story of the scheming villain Haman found? What is meant by 'she's a real Jezebel' or 'he's a doubting Thomas'? Clearly identified in these pages are nearly 3,000 individuals - absolutely every man, woman, and child, important or obscure - named in the Bible. In cases of multiple spelling, the names are carefully cross-referenced. When more than one person bears a particular name - there are twenty-five Azariahs, for example, and thirty Zechariahs - each is clearly identified and distinguished from the others. Scripture references are given for each name, along with a brief resume of all that is known concerning the person - genealogy, significant accomplishments, or historical facts. The information is accurate; the descriptions concise; and the style readable and fascinating. An ideal book for Bible teachers and scholars, for the lay person who is often confronted with literary references to Biblical personalities, for writers and speakers to whom accuracy is paramount - a dependable, complete who's who in the Bible." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear, small bump at bottom corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light fading to color on spine and front hinge area, some light browning on inside and top edge of flaps, light wrinkling at bottom of flap folds, minor edge wear.

"By probing the accounts of Jesus' death in the Gospel of Mark and in Paul's letters, (this book) uncovers a vision of divine power and justice that calls us to become partners in God's struggle to overcome suffering and injustice in the world. This symbol is a magnificent reminder of the redemption and transformation of lives and situations through Christ's identification with suffering." GRAIL KNIGHTS OF NORTH AMERICA: ON THE TRAIL OF THE GRAIL LEGACY IN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES., Bradley, Michael.
11 Bradley, Michael. GRAIL KNIGHTS OF NORTH AMERICA: ON THE TRAIL OF THE GRAIL LEGACY IN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES.
Toronto Hounslow Press 1998 0888822030 / 9780888822031 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good+
414 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Realizing from mediaeval documents that the initial Nova Scotia refuge of A.D. 1398 must have harboured many Grail believers, and that the secret colony must have expanded, Bradley began to trace evidence of Grail Knights from Nova Scotia, through New Brunswick to the St. Lawrence River, and on to the Great Lakes as far as Niagara, New York State, and central Pennsylvania. Evidence of their presence has been uncovered on both the Canadian and American sides of this great waterway. Bradley poses compelling questions about his discoveries, and offers plausible and provocative answers as we travel with him and his companions (both academic and amateur) along the trail of the 'Grail Knights of North America'." SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES., Brewer, Priscilla J.
12 Brewer, Priscilla J. SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES.
Hanover, NH University Press of New England 1986 0874513626 / 9780874513622 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
273 pp, large 8vo (89 1/4" H). B&w photographs, tables. "Athough we know much about Shaker furniture, dance, textiles, and various artifacts, few books tell us about the Shakers as real people and the inner social workings of their sect. Who were the Shakers? What were their social, economic, and religious backgrounds? Why did they join this celibate, communal sect, and why did some leave while others stayed? What did they think of life inside the communities and the rapidly changing world outside? And, perhaps most important, when and why did the sect begin to decline, and how did Believers adjust to this decline? These are some of the questions Priscilla Brewer addresses in this engaging social history. Her highly readable general introduction to the Shakers challenges basic assumptions about the timing and reasons for the group's decline. Brewer studies the Shaker movement from its founding in 1774 to its last major public statement in 1904, restricting her work to the eleven Shaker communities in eastern New York and New England. (She) provides an inside look at Shaker life by recounting the group's social organization, the occupational roles of its members, the composition of its communities, and the operation of the Shaker hierarchy. Far from being a dry, sociological study, this book is filled with anecdotes and revealing stories related by the Shakers through the many writings they left behind." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny foxing mark on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, slight fading to spine color.

BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC., Brooks, Polly Schoyer.
13 Brooks, Polly Schoyer. BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC.
New York J.B. Lippincott 1990 03973242257 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Signed by Author
176 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. Signed by author on half title page. "Inspired by her love for France, by her determination to see the rightful king rule, and especially by her private visions and voices, Joan (of Arc) overcame the doubts of everyone from her parents to the king himself. Within a year Joan led the French to a resounding victory at Orleans and made possible the coronation of Charles VII in the cathedral of Reims. But after her glorious triumph, conflicts in the French camp, bad advice, and perhaps Joan's own headstrong nature brought her to defeat and finally to imprisonment and trial for heresy and witchcraft. Burned as a witch by the English after what was largely a political trial, she was later cleared of heresy, and eventually canonized. She is now the most popular French heroine and saint. (The author) has sifted through the records of Joan's trial, examined the studies of major historians, and roamed the streets of Domremy to find out who Joan really was. Neither a cardboard saint nor - as few still think - a witch, Joan emerges as a lively, emotional, determined person who believed so strongly in her cause that she overcame every obstacle she faced. Here is a new Joan for a new generation ready to question old legends and to marvel again at her courage and faith." Part of a series of history books aimed at the teenage reader. Light wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's signed bookplate on front pastedown. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, a few small light line indentations on front panel and on rear flap, slight fading to spine color.

291 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 077351757X "...argues that Catholics and Protestants shared very similar views of Christian womanhood. Both lauded the influence of the virtuous Christian woman, used the same female r ole models from the Bible, and saw the home as the locus of the construction of female piety. Yet each group castigated the other for having antifemale values. Protestants developed the slovenly, drunken 'Biddy' as a stereotype of Catholic women and Catholics portrayed Protestant devotional and family life as cold and arid. Observers of present-day Northern Ireland will find these historical contrasts of immediate relevance." HOW THE IRISH SAVED CIVILIZATION: THE UNTOLD STORY OF IRELAND'S HEROIC ROLE FROM THE FALL OF ROME TO THE RISE OF MEDIEVAL EUROPE., Cahill, Thomas.
17 Cahill, Thomas. HOW THE IRISH SAVED CIVILIZATION: THE UNTOLD STORY OF IRELAND'S HEROIC ROLE FROM THE FALL OF ROME TO THE RISE OF MEDIEVAL EUROPE.
New York Nan A. Talese / Doubleday 1995 0385418485 / 9780385418485 7th Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
246 pp, 8 1/2" H. Colour pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations. "From the fall of Rome to the rise of Charlemagne - the 'dark ages' - learning, scholarship, and culture disappeared from the European continent. The great heritage of western civilization - from the Greek and Roman classics to Jewish and Christian works - would have been utterly lost were it not for the holy men and women of unconquered Ireland. In this delightful and illuminating look into a crucial but little-known 'hinge' of history, Thomas Cahill takes us to the 'island of saints and scholars', the Ireland of St. Patrick and the Book of Kells. Here, far from the barbarian despoliation of the continent, monks and scribes laboriously, lovingly, even playfully preserved the west's written treasury. With the return of stability in Europe, these Irish scholars were instrumental in spreading learning. Thus the Irish not only were conservators of civilization, but became shapers of the medieval mind, putting their unique stamp on western culture. (T)his pivotal era is brought back to life, its personages portrayed in all their seemingly contemporary humanity, its issues simply and compellingly spelled out." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight fading to colour at top/bottom edges of spine/hinge cloth. Dust jacket has minor edge wear and minor rubbing, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, three soft vertical creases - one on each panel and on each flap.

THE LATER ROMAN EMPIRE, AD 284-430., Cameron, Averil.
18 Cameron, Averil. THE LATER ROMAN EMPIRE, AD 284-430.
Cambridge, Massachusetts Harvard University Press 1993 067451193X / 9780674511934 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
238 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "Marked by the shift of power from Rome to Constantinople and the Christianization of the Empire, this pivotal era requires a narrative and interpretative history of its own. Averil Cameron, an authority on later Roman and early Byzantine history and culture, captures the vigor and variety of the fourth century, doing full justice to the enormous explosion of recent scholarship. After 100 year of political turmoil, civil war, and invasion, the Roman Empire that Diocletian inherited in A.D. 284 desperately needed the radical restructuring he gave its government and defenses. His successor Constantine, continued the revolution by adopting - for himself and the Empire - a vibrant new religion: Christianity. The fourth century was an era of wide cultural diversity, represented by figures as different as Julian the Apostate and St. Augustine. Cameron provides a vivid narrative of its events and explores central questions about the economy, social structure, urban life, and cultural multiplicity of the extended Empire. Examining the transformation of the Roman world into a Christian culture, she takes note of the competition between Christianity and Neoplatonism. And she paints a lively picture of the new imperial city of Constantinople. By combining literary, artistic, and archaeological evidence, she has produced an exciting record of social change." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing on panels - mainly on rear panel.
